Re: Team Representation at Qualifying Events

Dear ISA Members,

As we look ahead to the 2019 and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the ISA Executive Committee has reviewed and determined the protocol for team representation at the Qualifying Events.

On behalf of the EC, we wish to confirm that, for events serving as official Qualifying Events for Continental Games or for the Olympic Games, and in accordance with the Olympic Charter, surfers may only represent an ISA Member from territories with representation of a National Olympic Committee (NOC). ISA Member Federations without NOC representation will not be allowed to participate in Qualifying Events.

The following ISA events have been announced as Qualifying Events for the :

1. 2018 ISA World Games 2. 2018 ISA World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship 3. 2019 ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship

The following events have been announced as Qualifying Events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games:

1. 2019 Pan American Games 2. 2019 ISA World Surfing Games 3. 2020 ISA World Surfing Games

The surfers who have once competed for Member Federations without NOC representation will therefore be subject to selection for the National Team with NOC recognition of their territory. We strongly encourage Member Federations without NOCs to coordinate with Member Federations with NOC recognition of their territory to ensure that all athletes are aware of selection criteria for Qualifying Events. This applies to all Member Federations without NOC representation, even those that are not qualifying for this respective Continental Games.

Following Qualification Events, these athletes may return to represent their former ISA Member Federation. An official Change of Nation Request is not needed unless the surfer’s intention to represent the ISA Member Federations with NOC recognition indefinitely.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

The International Surfing Association
