Nhl Morning Skate – Dec NHL MORNING SKATE – DEC. 2, 2019 THREE HARD LAPS * A Bruins player was the first in the NHL to score 25 goals for the first time in nearly 45 years, when Phil Esposito reached the mark on Dec. 15, 1974. Esposito went on to conclude that season as the League’s goal-scoring leader, edging Montreal’s Guy Lafleur by eight tallies. * The Oilers tandem of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl became the first players to record 50 points in 2019-20. Aside from the former in 2016-17, only one other Edmonton player has been the first in the NHL to reach the 50-point mark in a season: Wayne Gretzky, who did so seven times in consecutive fashion from 1981-82 to 1987-88. * It was a day of milestones for franchise icon Mikko Koivu, who became the first player to skate 1,000 regular-season games with the Wild. The club’s all-time leader in regular-season scoring also recorded his 700th career point and notched the shootout winner as Minnesota extended its point streak to nine contests (6-0-3). PASTRNAK SCORES LEAGUE-LEADING 25TH GOAL OF THE SEASON Bruins forward David Pastrnak scored his League-leading 25th goal of the season (25-17—42 in 27 GP). He became the eighth different player in the last 30 years to reach the 25-goal mark in 27 or fewer games and second to do so with Boston over that span, joining Cam Neely. * Aside from Pastrnak and Neely, only three other players in franchise history have reached the 25-goal mark in 27 games or fewer: Phil Esposito in 1973-74 (25-28—53 in 23 GP), Herb Cain in 1943-44 (26-18—44 in 24 GP) and Cooney Weiland in 1929-30 (25-15—40 in 27 GP). * Pastrnak became the 11th different player in NHL history to score 25 or more goals in a season through games played Dec. 1 and first since Mario Lemieux 27 years ago. * The Bruins extended their win and point streaks to seven and 11 games (8-0-3), respectively, and improved to 19-3-5 (43 points) this season to pass the idle Capitals (19-4-5, 43 points) for first place in the NHL standings. Boston moved to 11-0-4 (26 points) at TD Garden in 2019-20, its second-longest season-opening home point streak in franchise history behind a 21-game run in 1973-74 (19-0-2, 40 points). INSIDE THE NUMBERS: PASTRNAK HALFWAY TO 50 GOALS David Pastrnak is halfway to becoming the eighth active NHL player to record at least one 50- goal season, in which he would join Alex Ovechkin (7x), Ilya Kovalchuk (2x), Steven Stamkos (2x), Sidney Crosby (1x), Leon Draisaitl (1x), Evgeni Malkin (1x) and Corey Perry (1x). * The most markers any member of the above cohort had through 27 games of a 50-goal season was 23, which was Kovalchuk in 2007-08 (23-15—38). * Of the 196 total 50-goal seasons in League history, only two dozen featured a player with 25 or more tallies through their first 27 games including just six over the last 30 years. McDAVID, DRAISAITL REACH 50-POINT MARK Oilers teammates Connor McDavid (19-32—51 in 29 GP) and Leon Draisaitl (18-32—50 in 29 GP) each found the score sheet twice to become the first players to reach the 50-point mark this season. They became the sixth and seventh different players in the last 25 years to reach the 50-point mark in 29 games or less. * McDavid and Draisaitl became the third and fourth different players in the last 30 years with 50 or more points in a season through games played Dec. 1. * Aside from McDavid and Draisaitl, only two other players in franchise history were at least halfway to 100 points in a season through the first day of December: Wayne Gretzky (7x) and Jari Kurri (1x). * The pair became the fourth set of teammates in NHL history with 50 or more through games played Dec. 1, joining Gretzky and Kurri in 1983-84 (w/ EDM), Mario Lemieux and Rob Brown in 1988-89 (w/ PIT) as well as Bernie Nicholls and Gretzky in 1988-89 (w/ LAK). KOIVU REACHES 1,000-GAME MILESTONE Wild captain Mikko Koivu (0-1—1) skated in the 1,000th regular-season game of his NHL career and became the first player in franchise history to reach the milestone. * Koivu, who made his League debut five years after the franchise’s inaugural season in 2000- 01, has appeared in 68.1% of the all-time regular-season games contested by the Wild (1,000 of 1,469). That represents the second-highest such percentage by a player with an NHL franchise (min. 1,000 GP contested by club), behind only Patrick Marleau with San Jose (69.7%; 1,517 of 2,176). * Koivu and his brother, Saku (1,124 GP), became the sixth set of siblings in NHL history to each skate 1,000 or more regular-season games. * Aside from the Koivu brothers, only five other Finnish-born players in NHL history have reached the 1,000-game milestone: Teemu Selanne (1,451 GP), Teppo Numminen (1,372 GP), Jari Kurri (1,251 GP), Olli Jokinen (1,231 GP) and Kimmo Timonen (1,108 GP). It’s been a common refrain for the Winnipeg Jets lately, as they just can’t seem to get close to a full, healthy lineup. Seven players were out due to injury in Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Philadelphia. Here’s what we know about all of them, with further updates expected today as the Jets return to action with a morning skate and then their game in Washington against the Capitals. Mark Scheifele has missed two games with a suspected shoulder injury, and there will be no rushing him back into action. He’s considered day-to-day at this point, and coach Paul Maurice had said last week he was a possibility to play either tonight, or tomorrow in Nashville. But don’t bet on it. Defenceman Toby Enstrom is battling a lower-body issue which kept him out for four games, saw him return in New Jersey last Thursday and then be back out on Saturday. Maurice said it’s a nagging thing that can change day-to-day, so his status is very much a question mark. Defenceman Dmitry Kulikov missed Saturday’s game after getting hurt Thursday in New Jersey. Maurice hasn’t said how long he could be out, only that it’s upper-body. Goalie Steve Mason has been sent back to Winnipeg for further testing on a lower-body injury he suffered late in the game against the New York Rangers last Tuesday, which was his first game back from his second concussion of the season.
