JOHN DRYDEN AND THE LATE 17TH CENTURY DRAMATIC EXPERIENCE LECTURE 16 (C) BY ASHER ASHKAR GOHAR 1 CREDIT HR. JOHN DRYDEN (1631 – 1700) HIS LIFE: John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the “Age of Dryden”. The son of a country gentleman, Dryden grew up in the country. When he was 11 years old the Civil War broke out. Both his father’s and mother’s families sided with Parliament against the king, but Dryden’s own sympathies in his youth are unknown. About 1644 Dryden was admitted to Westminster School, where he received a predominantly classical education under the celebrated Richard Busby. His easy and lifelong familiarity with classical literature begun at Westminster later resulted in idiomatic English translations. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1654. What Dryden did between leaving the university in 1654 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 is not known with certainty. In 1659 his contribution to a memorial volume for Oliver Cromwell marked him as a poet worth watching. His “heroic stanzas” were mature, considered, sonorous, and sprinkled with those classical and scientific allusions that characterized his later verse. This kind of public poetry was always one of the things Dryden did best. On December 1, 1663, he married Elizabeth Howard, the youngest daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st earl of Berkshire. -

The Justification of English National Imperialism in John Dryden’s Poems Lee, Chung eun Contents Ⅰ. English Imperialism in Terms of Virgil’s Aeneid and “Songs from King Arthur” Ⅱ. Eulogizing Charles II’s Legitimacy Ⅲ. The Poems in Terms of Imperial Propaganda Ⅳ. Conclusion John Dryden justified imperialism as a means of strengthening the Stuart’s monarchy in his poems. In conjunction with the historical legacy of imperialism, he reawakened the imperial origin from the source of Virgil’s Aeneid and the myth of King Arthur. These initial perceptions of mythical epics substantiated the poetic history of imperialism. Such inclination toward the dominant ideology drove Dryden to contemplate the imperial legitimacy in England from the past time. Since Dryden served as a public poet who celebrated and praised the imperial movement, his poems mostly dealt with political agendas. In a sense, his conservative propagandas for the Stuart Monarchy entailed the national unification in England. Particularly, the heroic King, Charles II, was not only glorified, but also remembered as the most powerful entity in Dryden’s poems because of his imperial policies. Dryden’s political purpose was to preserve the Stuart monarchy as a central point of the powerful imperialism. Without doubt, the rhetoric of unification was symbolically harmonized for the purpose of 210 영미연구 제34집 national stability under the Stuart monarchy. Thus, by writing poems, John Dryden acted as the political prophet for the culmination of English imperialism in which the Stuart monarchy reigns. I. chapter 3 Language Reform in the Late Seventeenth Century Ryan J. Stark In the opening chapter [Rhetoric, Science, and Magic in Seventeenth-Century England], I focused upon the rise of the new plain style, emphasizing how modern experimentalists rejected both the tropes of magic and mystery and, in the opposite direction, the discourses of materialism and skepticism (e.g., sadducism, deism, and atheism). In this chapter, I concentrate on the culmina- tion of rhetorical reform in early modern England: the Royal Society’s plain language program. I show in particular how members of the organization and other like-minded writers used the new plain style in order to counteract bewitching idioms, which most intellectuals of the period saw as the primary linguistic cause of England’s religious and social strife. My overarching argu- ment is that a group of experimental philosophers—by creating a new under- standing of style, and of language in general—brought about a paradigm shift in the English rhetorical tradition. Of course, significant changes in the world require many different participants in many different capacities, and the seventeenth-century reformation in style is no exception. A small circle of scientific writers did not alter the linguistic cosmos by themselves. To appreciate how plainness emerged on a large scale requires at minimum a non-linear model of how ideas influence societies, not to mention an intuition about the workings of Zeitgeists. James Sutherland is a bit hyperbolic when he suggests that after 1660 English prose gets a fresh start.1 He would have been more accurate to say that English philosophy of rhetoric begins anew around 1665, give or take several years, building upon Francis Bacon’s key formulation of the split between words and things in The Advancement of Learning, and also drawing upon many other criticisms of enchanted rhetoric in the late Renaissance, including those offered by philosophers, orators, poets, and, most notably, preachers and theologians. -

Puritans and the Royal Society THE official programme of the recent tercentenary celebrations of the founding of the Royal Society included a single religious service. This was held at 10.30 a.m. at St Paul's Cathedral when the Dean, the Very Rev. W. R. Matthews, D.D., D.LITT., preached a sermon related to the building's architect, Sir Christopher Wren. Otherwise there seems to be little reference to the religious background of the Society's pioneers and a noticeable omission of appreciation of the considerable Puritan participation in its institution. The events connected with the Royal Society's foundation range over the period 1645 to 1663, but there were also earlier influences. One of these was Sir Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam, 1561-1626. Douglas McKie, Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science, University College, London, in The Times Special Number, 19 July 1960, states that Bacon's suggested academy called Solomon's House described in New Atlantis (1627) was too often assumed to be influential in the founding of the Royal Society, much in the same way as Bacon's method of induction, expounded in his Novum Organum of 1620, has been erroneously regarded as a factor in the rise of modern science. But this may be disputed, for Bacon enjoyed considerable prestige as a learned man and his works were widely read. -

He is second only to Shakespeare. Apart from John Milton there were other several lyric-writers who have left us sweet songs. One of them was Richard Lovelace, who wrote To Althea, from Prison and To Lucasta, on Going to the Wars. One of the best living lyric poets of that time was Robert Herrick. He writes well about the English country and its flowers. His love songs are also sweet. At about this time Edmund Waller wrote some of the earliest heroic couplets, a form of verse which was widely used in the next hundred and fifty years. In this meter a couplet is a pair of lines, rhyming and of five iambic feet. Waller wrote His Majesty's Escape in the meter and he has been honoured for inventing the heroic couplet, but there are other poets for whom the claim is made. -

Ownership marks and autograph annotations from well-known writers or public figures increase the intellectual interest as well as monetary value of a given book. Handwritten keys, pointers, and marginal glosses can help to reveal unique, historical information unavaila- ble in the printed text; information that, in turn, can be used to reconstruct various reading and interpretive experiences of the past. However, increas- ingly scholars such as Alan Westphall have acknowledged that the ‘study of marginalia and annotations’ results in ‘microhistory, producing narratives that are often idiosyncratic’. While twenty to fifty percent of early modern texts have some sort of marking in them, many of these forays in textual alterity are unsystematic and fail to address, as William Sherman notes, ‘the larger patterns that most literary and historical scholars have as their goal’.
