The Official Newsletter of Yustaga Lodge 385, February 2002 2002 Section Conclave MAKE PLANS NOW TO ATTEND (NOTE THE DATE CHANGE)

The 2002 Section SR-4N Conclave will be held April 12-14 at Camp Tukabatchee, located north of Prattville, Alabama. It is being hosted by Alibamu 179. This will be the first conclave with the newly aligned lodges of SR-4N (179, 224, 229, 322, 353, 385, 545). The weekend promises to be one filled with fun, competition, fellowship, learning and inspiration. The cost for the event is $27.00. Payment is due to the council office by March 1, 2002. Yustaga has been allotted 50 delegate slots for the conclave, to be filled at a 2:1 youth to adult ratio. Therefore, unfortunately, it is possible that all interested adults may not be able to attend. Any adult who is not selected as a delegate will receive a refund. Although an exact rendezvous and arrival time has not yet been selected, it will require that participants leave shortly after lunch on April 12, necessitating participants to leave school/work early. New this year, is an expanded souvenir and memorabilia list. In addition to the usual items, there will also be an embroidered neckerchief, belt buckle, canvas bag and sticker. An order form is included in this issue of the Osprey. Please note that the lodge had to submit an order for souvenirs prior to publication. Although an effort will be made to fill all orders, it may become necessary to limit the number of certain items that an individual may purchase to insure an equitable distribution of items to the group as a whole. With a new section, comes new friendships, good natured rivalries and opportunities. Yustaga proved to be an influential and dominating member of SR-8b and its forerunners. There is no reason to believe that we will not continue to play that same role in the new section. There is no impression like the first impression. Let us give the new lodges in our section a first impression that they will never forget!

Choctaw Chapter ------Check it out, The Choctaw Chapter had a pretty good December. We had a Christmas party at Hunan 2s. 25 members showed up and ate Chinese food. Hoo rah!! That was cool! Just a quick word from the Unit Elections team, Unit Elections are coming up! The dead line for them is the end of Febuary. Make sure your Chapter has it's elections teams made up and get out there and hold elections. Oh yea, we're still the same Chapter chances are we're gonna' be like that for a while. Hope to see ya'll at the Spring Fellowship. Take care now, and have a grrrrreat New Year, too. - Mike Schwartz ------Oschambos Chapter Due to a job change, Tony Gibbs is stepping down as chapter advisor and Chad Hartley is taking his position. We are in the process of coming up with a unit election team and completing the unit elections. We are currently planning the February chapter meeting and trying to increase the chapter membership by changing some of the regular meetings with outdoor adventures such as day trips or weekend trips. To increase chapter moral we are planning to come out with a chapter T-shirt. We are encouraging all chapter members to attend the Spring Fellowship and Conclave. We are planning to organize a phone tree to help stay in touch with all chapter members, and along with the phone tree, we will send out a chapter newsletter between the Osprey’s publications. Panzacola Chapter Our chapter is currently trying to encourage attendance at chapter meetings and events. To do so we have an ex-pilot from the navy coming to speak on January 24th. There is also a chapter campout planned for February 8-10th at Naval Live Oak group campsite in Gulf Breeze. We still meet every 4th Thursday at troop hut 3. We also had vice chapter chief elections because Sean Carmichael was leaving. Craig Bonfield was elected to the position. Techakin Chapter

We held a presentation at the January Round table for unit elections. Our next meeting is January 17th, 2002. We meet at redeemer Lutheran Church. National Leadership Seminar

The National Leadership Seminar, or NLS, is an intensive weekend conference focusing on the skills and attributes of leadership. It is intended primarily to enhance the leadership skills of the Order of the Arrow’s key youth and adult members as they seek to improve their services to the Boy Scouts of America and the greater community. Although Yustaga sent a contingent to the NLS in October, which was set aside for our section, there is a possibility that another opportunity may arise in March. The region is hosting another NLS March 15-17, 2002 in Canton, Mississippi for the Mississippi lodges. However, early registration indicates that the conference may not be filled. In that case, it is possible that we may be offered the chance to send Arrowmen to the session to fill out the conference. The lodge will not know if we will have this opportunity until February. If you are interested in attending, please contact either the Lodge Chief or the Lodge Advisor.

OA Increases Service Opportunities to Units, Districts and the Council

The OA Strategic Plan for the 21st Century announced increased service to the units, districts and councils that the Order of the Arrow serves. In the spirit of that challenge, Yustaga is pleased to announce three new service opportunities for our members: Mentoring Program, ASK, and OA Service Corps. Each of the three programs are discussed below. While Scoutreach and ASK are national programs, the Lodge Service Corps is a local program. Arrowmen can download applications for all three groups from the lodge website. Applications should then be completed carefully and returned to: Wade Hartley, P.O. Box 25, Atmore, AL. 36504 (See the related articles on these great programs elsewhere in this issue)

Lodge Service Corps

A great service opportunity for Arrowmen is the Lodge Service Committee. While Scoutreach and ASK focus on the unit, the Lodge Service Corps will provide service on a council basis. It is the intent of the program to provide administrative and program support at council activities. Recognizing that the life blood for our Scout Troops and the Order of the Arrow exists in the program, a special emphasis will be placed on providing assistance at council cub events such as Webelos Weekends and Family Camp. The Service Corps will be open to both adult and youth members. When requested, the Service Corps will assist at the aforementioned events, under the direction of the particular event’s leadership. However, the Service Corps will be identified as OA members either through the wearing of the sash or other appropriate clothing. As the program develops, it is the long range plan of the Lodge Administration, in addition to assisting with existing council activities, to host and sponsor our own programs for both Cubs and Scouts in the Gulf Coast Council. Scoutreach Mentoring Program

The Order of Arrow Scoutreach Mentoring Program is a joint effort of the national Scoutreach Division of the Boy Scouts of America and the Order of the Arrow. Its purpose is to identify and assist urban and rural Scout troops whose camping and advancement programs are below standard. The goals and functions of the program are: • To act as a positive change agent in the midst of startling social, political, economic, and demographic events affecting urban and rural Scouts. • To increase advancement and camping opportunities for Scouts in urban and rural troops whose programs might be insufficient. • To fulfill the Order of the Arrow Strategic Plan. • To create the opportunity for more urban and rural Scouts to become eligible for membership in the Order of the Arrow. • To provide additional, positive youth and adult role models for disadvantaged urban and rural Scouts and adult leaders. • To create a "guided discovery" for Order of the Arrow members to reflect on the ideal of "He alone is worthy to wear the arrow who will continue faithfully to serve his fellow man."

The program matches selected Arrowmen with qualifying troops to aid them as mentors in improving their camping and advancement programs. Arrowmen must complete an application from which will be screened by lodge leadership, district executives, and district commissioners. Once eligible troops have been identified, selected mentors will then be matched to a troop as needed. Special recognition is available to all mentors who complete action plans with their assigned troops. Before recognition is granted, mentors must have the approval of the urban or rural Scoutmaster, lodge chief, lodge adviser, lodge unit service committee chairman, and district commissioner. Once approvals are granted, the Scout executive will forward applications to the national Scoutreach Division. The national Scoutreach Division will forward patches and certificates to the Scout executive for presentation. The Order of the Arrow Scoutreach Mentor Award consists of a colorful triangular patch and certificate. Mentors who successfully complete their first action plans and have received application approval are presented patches and certificates with a bronze border. Mentors completing action plans for a second time, with application approval, are presented patches and certificates with a silver border. Finally, mentors completing action plans and approved for a third time are presented patches and certificates with a gold border. Both adults and youth are eligible to participate in the program. Only knowledgeable, dedicated Arrowmen will be selected as mentors. Service in the program requires extended service and attention to a troop’s needs and will call for diligent participation. Only those Arrowmen who truly characterize the best that has to offer will be selected for participation on the program. Because the program requires training and education of district leadership in addition to OA members, implementation of the program will not begin until later in the year. However, we would like to have the mentors in place and ready to serve once the program is organized on the council and district levels. A training session will be conducted at the Spring Fellowship for interested Arrowmen. A S K - ARROWMEN SHARING KNOWLEDGE Through the spirit of outdoor challenge and experience, the Order of the Arrow can offer a new focus of service to troops - both those having difficulty offering a sense of outdoor adventure and those just wanting a new resource to consider. The idea is to assist troops with the development and implementation of the outdoor program. The delivery is through a group called Arrowmen Sharing Knowledge, or ASK for short. A scoutmaster, 'new' or 'veteran,' could call upon the Order of the Arrow ASK Team to perform a demonstration on one of a variety of topics relating to advancement, skill development, preparation, or just plain fun. The demonstration could take one or two meetings, but might also include a campout. The objectives of Arrowmen Sharing Knowledge are to: • Serve troops as learning facilitators for in- creasing skill development and enriching the fundamental Scouting program. • Provide role models who live the Scout Oath and Law as examples for younger scouts to emulate. • Enhance the Scouting experience for young men who otherwise might leave the program.

Many Order of the Arrow members find themselves in a difficult ‘transition period' around the age of 21. This is a time when they are too old to hold lodge office, but seem too young to serve as advisers. Therefore, the 18-30 year old age group is the primary target for ASK Team membership since involvement in another capacity is sometimes difficult. However, in some circumstances, Arrowmen under the age of 18 who have outstanding speaking abilities, considerable knowledge and skills, and a mature Scouting attitude may serve as an ASK Team member. Likewise, an Arrowman may be over 30 years old and possess a rare skill needed to complete the Team. Thus, Arrowmen outside the target ages may be an asset to the ASK program, if used wisely.

Possible presentation topics/knowledge areas may include: Communications Backpacking Athletics Orienteering Rock Climbing Hobbies Shooting Leadership High Adventure Geology Sailing Fishing Physical Fitness Pioneering Camping Citizenship Space Exploration Environment Hiking Cooking Winter Camping Sciences First Aid Safety Wilderness Survival Nature Rappelling Swimming

The primary difference between this program and the Scoutreach Mentoring Program is the targeted unit and the level of commitment by the OA members. In the Scoutreach program, the focus is on those units who are having problems in advancement or outdoor program. It provides a mentor for an ongoing relationship and involvement with the troop to improve the troop program. ASK on the other hand, is available to any troop. Its purpose is to provide a stand-alone presentation or activity and does not call for ongoing involvement with the unit. ASK team members decide how active they can be in the program and no one particular member is called upon for more than he has volunteered. ------YUSTAGA, YUSTAGA, OUR SPIRIT’S ALIVE! THERE AIN’T NOBODY BETTER THAN THREE EIGHTY FIVE! CHIEFLY SPEAKING

Dear Brothers,

I hope everyone had a great holiday season. As we are now in the New Year there are many things that are going to be going on. As we are coming closer to the Spring Fellowship we are getting all the final details done. We are also working hard on getting ready for Conclave. This should be a fun and interesting Conclave as we are coming together for the first time with our new section. There is going to be a lot going on at the Spring Fellowship for every one of all ages. We have planed events and games for the youth and the adults. Just as a reminder you will need a class 1 medical form when you show up. You can find a class 1 medical form on www.yustaga385.com on the resource page. Just down load it and fill it out. We hope you can make it to the Spring Fellowship as it is going to be one of the best outings you will have attended. As we come to the Spring Fellowship I would like for you to think of any type of a spirit item we could use for Conclave. This way we can all determine what kind of a spirit item the lodge would like to have.

Yours in Wimachtendienk, Monty Haight Yustaga Lodge Chief 2002 New Advisor Appointments December and January saw several new advisor appointments on the chapter and lodge level, and leadership on the section level. As an adult, he has served as lodge website advisor and is currently the Lodge Publications Committee Advisor. Due to a job change requiring extensive traveling, Tony Gibbs stepped down as Chapter Advisor for Oschambos Chapter. Chad Hartley was named as the new chapter advisor. Chad is a former chapter chief, lodge chief and section secretary. He also attended the old National Leadership Seminar. As an adult, he has served as Co-Advisor for the Brotherhood Committee. Steve Kolek and Jim Matson were appointed as Associate Lodge Advisors. Both have attended the National Leadership Seminar and Jim has attended the National Lodge Advisor’s Training Seminar. Jim is also a former lodge chief of Yustaga 385. Finally, Wade Hartley has been appointed to serve as the head of the Section Resource Group for SR- 4N. ORDEAL MEMBER INFORMATION Brothers, As a former Brotherhood Committee Chairman, and now as the Committee Advisor let me encourage all of you that haven't sealed your membership within the Lodge to do so. For those of you who are eligible, it usually only takes one day, and can be accomplished at an OA event. Most of it can be done within your own Chapter. Who is eligible, you might ask? Well anyone who has been an ordeal member for 10 months or longer is eligible to seal their membership in the Order. But you don't have to wait your 10 months to attend the Brotherhood training sessions. It is all right to knock out the requirements early. And, it is never too late to complete the requirements for those who have already started or have been an Ordeal member for awhile. To those Brothers out there who are already Brotherhood or Vigil, I ask you to help us out in getting Brothers to attend and seal their membership. If every Chapter would make it a goal of having at least 2 members from their Chapter attend and cross over at each Lodge Event, this Lodge would more than meet the 30% conversion rate needed for Honor Lodge. Well, here is to all of the new Brotherhood Members we will be seeing this year.

Kevin Jura Witawematpanni Nimat Brotherhood Advisor WHICH CHAPTER WILL HAVE THE MOST ORDEAL MEMBERS BECOME BROTHERHOOD MEMBERS AT THE SPRING FELLOWSHIP? Apalachee? Choctaw? Oschambos? Panzacola? The Elangomat Training Program will prepare YOU to encourage and inspire each candidate to the ideals of Brotherhood and Cheerful Service. This training program will be held in conjunction with the Brotherhood Committee in developing a New Arrowman/First Year Program and instituting a post-Ordeal plan to encourage new Ordeal member participation at future events. TO BE AN ELANGOMANT AND EARN THE PATCH, YOU MUST COMPLETE THIS TRAINING PROGRAM. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, CONTACT YOUR CHAPTER CHIEF / ADVISOR.

Go Back! Go Back! Go Back into the Woods! Your Flap ain’t got no Osprey, but you wish that it would! Camp Staff Interviews

Camp Staff interviews will be conducted on two occasions this year. The first will be on March 2 during the Spring Fellowship at Camp. The second interview opportunity will be held one weekday afternoon at the Council Service Center in Pensacola. The date for this interview will be announced at a later time. This year's Program Director, Chuck McMullen, served on camp staff for eight years. He has already got new programs in place for this year's summer camp and is working on some programs that were very successful in past years. Our camp needs motivated Scouts to help provide a fun, educational, safe and spirited summer camp experience to our younger Scouts. The members of the Yustaga Lodge, Order of the Arrow have always stepped up to the challenges of Summer Camp Staff. Applications can be picked up at the Service Center, or you can E-mail the Program Director for an application to be sent to you in the mail or via e-mail. The email address for this year is [email protected].

------SPRING FELLOWSHIP 2002 TO BE BEST EVER SEND IN YOUR REGISTRATION TODAY!

As we come upon the Spring Fellowship each chapter needs to start thinking about what they are going to be doing. There will be all kinds of competitive events for each chapter to participate in. Some of these include: Table Decorations for each meal, OA Pictionary, scavenger hunt, OA Olympics. There will also be adventure skills, seminars, and chapter spirit which will all be added into find the best all around chapter. During the afternoon we will be playing flag football. Each chapter team must include at least two adults, but no more than three on the team at a time. This is also a chapter competition that will be added into best all around chapter. This years Spring Fellowship will have so much for you to do that there will be not time to just sit around and wonder, “What can I do?” We have looked at all aspects of the fellowship to make sure that there are events for both youth and adult arrowmen. On both Friday and Saturday night there will be campfires. On Friday night each chapter needs to plan two skits. These skits are for points and will be added in at the end of the weekend for best overall chapter. At the Saturday night campfire, will be a chance for the youth arrowmen to find out how big of a tall tale that two of the adults in their chapter can tell. Each chapter will need to have two adults ready to compete in the tall tales competition; which will also count for points towards best all around chapter. We will provide all the entertainment; you will just need to bring a positive attitude and a good outlook towards a new and better year. When you show up for check-in please have a class one medical form ready to turn in. You can get this class one medical form (This does not require a Doctors signature) from the Yustaga Lodge web site www.yustaga385.com If you have any question please fell free to call or e-mail me. My e-mail address is [email protected] or you can call me at 324-7446. I hope you will make every effort to attend, as this will be the best Spring Fellowship you will have ever attended.
