Universal's 2009 At the BBC double-disc set rounds up radio sessions recorded between 1979 and 1983 -- the peak years of the Joe Jackson Band, a period bookended by his Look Sharp! debut and his most popular album, Night and Day. The two discs are set up so they open with an earlier show and then close with a later one: the first has a Peel Session from 1979, then an 11- set at the Hammersmith Odeon from 1982, while the second disc has a ten-song show from the Hatfield Polytechnic in 1980 and seven from Hitchin's Regal Theatre in 1983. This gives each disc a similar feel, with each opening up with a tight, nervy, exhilarating set that gives way to a more sophisticated set. Naturally, sophisticated is a bit of a relative term -- Jackson had yet to fully delve into his jazz obsessions but they were certainly flowering via Night and Day, and that can be heard on the 1982 and 1983 sets, in the songs from Night and Day and in how "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" is given an a cappella, doo wop arrangement. Even then, what impresses throughout At the BBC is the unbridled, palpable energy. This is vigorous, exciting music, better proof of the band's greatness as a live act than the quite good Live 1980/86 collection and one of the better punk/new wave live sets available. © Stephen Thomas Erlewine © 2013 AllMusic, a division of All Media Network, LLC. | All Rights Reserved http://www.allmusic.com/album/release/at-the-bbc-mr0001031943. Joe Jackson, along with artists like Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and Ian Dury was one of the pioneers of the British artists that challenged the strong punk scene in the late 1970s and brought a “New Wave” sound to the United States. Joe very successfully managed to unite the anger of punk music with the intelligence of the singer . In 1979, Joe’s brilliant debut album, “Look Sharp!” charted in both Europe and North America. The album produced some hit singles and also earned Joe two 2 Grammy nominations. Joe released four more acclaimed albums between 1979 and 1982, but he soon turned his back on pop stardom and over the last four decades has embarked on a multitude of stylistically diverse musical adventures. Joe Jackson is a sophisticate, and that's his blessing and his curse. He has also been accused of being arrogant and too clever for his own good in attempting to interpret music outside the pop rock/New Wave genres. However, Joe is an incredibly eclectic artist and is certainly not arrogant. He is another great musician who is not afraid to experiment with many different music genres to try and create something original and different. Music would never evolve without guys like Joe. At heart, he is a jazzman, but he has covered classical, rock, pop, new wave, rock, and almost every you can think of. Some of his albums are pure classics, and include "I'm The Man, "Night and Day", and "Summer in the City: Live in New York". Every single one of these albums are musical diamonds, and incorporate Joe's amazing range of musical styles. The songs are superbly written, and every lyric and note written by Joe Jackson should be heard by all lovers of great modern music. This two CD 32 track set contains some historic BBC archive recordings of this legendary artist at the start of his career. The album includes a live session for BBC Radio 1's John Peel Show at BBC’s Maida Vale Studios in February 1979 and also three concerts from 1980, 1982 and 1983. “At The BBC” is a superb CD documentary documenting this brilliant musician’s best work which led to his phenomenal rise to success. If Joe Jackson is often “arrogant and too clever for his own good” for trying to cover classic jazz, swing, etc., at least the guy has proved that he can play, compose and sing all kinds of music and is extremely talented. Look at all the so called excuses for “pop stars” out there at the moment who are definitely “arrogant and too clever for their own good” without having any talent at all. well maybe at computer games! The album is VHR by A.O.O.F.C. Check out Joe’s “I’m The Man” album.
