SEOWEA Friends and Family Night with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Friday, November 4Th, 2016 SEOWEA Friends and Family Night with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Friday, November 4th, 2016 After a very successful Friends and Family Night with the Columbus Clippers in 2013 and 2014 and an exciting Columbus Crew SC match in 2015, the SEOWEA Executive Committee is hoping for another great event this year. Please join friends, families and colleagues for a Columbus Blue Jackets game at Nationwide Arena. The game will take place Friday, November 4th, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. vs. the Montreal Canadiens. The doors to Nationwide Arena open at 6:00 p.m. General admission group seating will be in the Sky Terrace. The cost for SEOWEA members is $25.00 per ticket and the price includes a buffet with kettle chips, popcorn, hot dogs, buffalo wings with celery and blue cheese and assorted cookies as well as water and soda drinks. A cash bar will also be available for Sky Terrace ticket holders. Tickets can be picked up at the Will Call of the Big Lots Box Office (200 W Nationwide Blvd, Columbus, Ohio) and the primary ticket holder will need a photo ID to claim the tickets. We have reserved 125 tickets, so please register early to ensure a seat as this game will likely be sold out. Please note that there is a purchase limit of four tickets per SEOWEA member. My name is Cameron Scholvin and I am the Chief Operating Officer for the Columbus Blue Jackets. I thank you for the opportunity to provide testimony today on the proposition of legalized sports betting in Ohio. First, I’d like to speak a bit about the Columbus Blue Jackets. The McConnell family had a vision of bringing professional sports to Columbus and were awarded the rights to a National Hockey League franchise in November of 1996. The following May, a referendum for a publicly funded arena failed, but instead of ending the city’s hopes of attracting an NHL team, Mr. McConnell met with leaders at Nationwide and a partnership was formed that resulted in a state- of-the-art arena opening in September 2000 and a transformation of downtown Columbus that continues today. This year’s unprecedented season of no fans and limited fans marks the team’s 20th Anniversary Season. The advent of the team, the arena and the Arena District replaced a condemned state penitentiary and sparked a rebirth of downtown Columbus. As the team goes the Arena District goes. If the District is the heart of the city then the Blue Jackets have most certainly been its heartbeat, bringing an energy, a pride and a passion previously unseen downtown. In fact, multiple markets have since visited Nationwide Arena and the Arena District, and consider it the model for how a professional sports team and venue can energize a city and become an economic engine for development.
