Star Wars Chair: John Vernaglia ’18 Rapporteur: Daniel Feinstein ’19 Specialized Committee: Star Wars Chair: John Vernaglia ’18 Rapporteur: Daniel Feinstein ’19 CAMUN 2018: Specialized Committee: Star Wars Page 1 of 8 Dear Delegates, Welcome to CAMUN 2018! We are so honored to have you with us today, diving into one of the greatest movie franchises in world history. My name is John Vernaglia and I’ll be chairing the committee; your rapporteur will be Daniel Feinstein. We have both passionately pursued Model UN since our freshman years and are so excited to bring you this committee today. After spending so much time in school working on global history we thought taking a trip to a galaxy far far away would make spring more enjoyable. Our committee will begin at an historic, unprecedented meeting of conference leaders of the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS). With the Clone Wars raging, it has become apparent that the end is not near. Hopefully, this meeting can help put an end to this galactic conflict. Some of our goals for this committee are to experience the chaos of the Clone Wars as well as capture all the fun of the numerous power struggles and allegiances that have come to characterize the franchise. That being said, in the Star Wars canon, we know the results of the Clone Wars; however, you are being given a rare chance to alter the course of the franchise's history and we will do our best to adapt to whatever changes you make. In the words of Jedi Master Yoda, “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Keep this quote in mind as you begin the research process. Additionally a position paper is strongly recommended, so if you have any questions or would like to submit a position paper, you can contact us at: [email protected] or daniel.feinstein@concordacademy.org. One last side note is that while Western business attire is completely okay for this committee, the chair would also welcome any star wars paraphernalia or garments that a delegate sees fit to wear. Sincerely, John Vernaglia ‘18, Chair Daniel Feinstein ‘19, Rapporteur CAMUN 2018: Specialized Committee: Star Wars Page 2 of 8 Background It is a time of galactic turmoil in the Republic! The story begins in the midst of the tense Clone Wars. Clear battle lines have been drawn following the battle of Geonosis as more systems have been drawn towards the allure of the separatists and the power of the droid army, led by General Grievous. This conflict was sparked when Count Dooku and other leaders of the Separatists attempted to execute Obi Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, who had been investigating a new droid army being built on geonosis. The day of their execution, 212 Jedi came to fight for their rescue and a fierce battle ensued, leaving only 40 members of the strike team, led by Mace Windu, remaining. Just as the Jedi were about to admit defeat, Master Yoda appeared with the newly approved, Kaminoan made Clone reinforcements. The newly fortified Jedi fought their way off of Geonosis, officially starting the Clone Wars. As the Clone Wars progressed, more and more neutral or Republic systems began aligning themselves with the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS). The Jedi have also taken on the role of Generals of the Grand Army of the Republic, a role they are not pleased with. Mace Windu states, “we are guardians of the peace, not soldiers.” This sentiment is echoed by many members of the meeting today as these historic peace talks have been initiated by members of both sides who do not see a quick end to the Clone Wars, and there are certainly some who will want to see the battle continue. Learning the motives for each committee member will increase your chances of success at these talks. Duchess Satine Kryze of Mandalore has graciously offered to host this conference, as Mandalore’s neutrality prevents any meddling from either the Republic or the CIS. Even though this meeting is a step in the right direction, the war still rages on. This historic meeting between the Republic and the Separatists should be treated as such. Your enemies and bitter rivals will be just across the table from you, do not go easy on them in negotiations. However, it is also important not to act impulsively (unless that fits your agenda) and throw the committee into chaos as your actions will have direct, and sometimes severe, ramifications across the galaxy. Your slandering remarks towards Jabba the Hutt could result in the whole outer rim going hungry, for instance, if he decides not to let the Republic use his hyperspace routes. Committee Structure In this committee, leaders from both sides will be forced to come together to find a solution to this galactic conflict. Everyone lucky enough to attend will have a vote. Any move to end the conflict will have to be passed with a 3/4th majority from the voting body. As committee begins, the war and concessions will be hotly contested as the two sides locked in bitter conflict will need to bring back something to their constituents. If the motion to end war is passed, a new government will also need to be formed; however if the war continues; a more military-oriented discussion will take place. Along CAMUN 2018: Specialized Committee: Star Wars Page 3 of 8 with this overarching issue will be the need to respond to crises that pop up along the way. The troops at the command of these groups will be of vital importance, along with the ability to control the war profiteers to help gain a foothold in the war and related crises. Questions to Consider 1. What are you hoping to achieve at this conference? What can you concede while still remaining true to your mission? 2. How would an end to the Clone Wars affect you and your allies? 3. Do you care more about your own image or that of the Republic/ Separatists? 4. How will you work to preserve your image at this conference to remain in power following the peace talks? Committee Members Jedi All Jedi have control over a battalion of Clones, as well as having tremendous influence over Republic senators. If a Jedi is leading a battalion of Clones in a battle, the Republic will have a significantly higher chance of winning that conflict. Yoda As master Yoda, the oldest and wisest Jedi attending this meeting, your word has great sway over the other Jedi in the committee. You have lived through many wars, and yet this one of galactic proportions is one of the worst you have seen. You are trying to find a speedy end to the war, while ensuring the Republic is not torn apart nor that the Jedi lose their influence over whatever new form of government appears. You also fear that the Sith are playing a major role in this conflict, but cannot quite figure out how. Anakin Skywalker As a brash young Jedi, you have been invited to this meeting to gain valuable experience. Your battlefield exploits have earned you fame and you have become a hero among the Republic. However, you also feel conflicted and desire more power from the Jedi—either a seat on the council or the rank of Master. Additionally you struggle with keeping your romance with fellow delegate Padme Amidala a secret. A helpful note is that your friendship with increasingly powerful Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is growing and you need to ensure that he remains powerful as the war progresses. Obi Wan Kenobi CAMUN 2018: Specialized Committee: Star Wars Page 4 of 8 As a Jedi Master, a member of the Jedi council, and someone who has been on the front lines of the Clone Wars, your battlefield experience will add some needed perspective to this conference. You still feel responsible for Anakin despite his growing power and are concerned about how he has grown closer to the Chancellor and has had more outbursts. You know how this war is affecting him, and know more than anyone else that an end to the war is in everyone’s best interests. A successful conference will see you closer with your former Padawan, and following the leaders of the Jedi council, Yoda and Windu, in their desire to end the Clone Wars. Ki Adi Mundi Another survivor of the battle of Geonosis, you, like Kenobi, have been on the front lines during the Clone Wars. You have earned the respect of your fellow Jedi due to your battlefield exploits as well as your wisdom. You are not afraid to speak your mind on the council and likewise you will have a strong voice in this committee. While following the lead of master Yoda, you aren't afraid to let your battlefield experience shine through regarding the dangers of this war. Mace Windu As the most skilled Jedi in battle and one of the leaders of the council, your word also carries a lot of weight among the other Jedi. After seeing so many of your comrades slain in the battle of Geonosis, you want to see the Separatists pay for the hurt they have caused the Jedi. You will have to balance this against your impulses of reason and compromise that come with being a Jedi Master. However, unlike most Jedi you possess an understanding of the dark side as you have mastered all seven lightsaber combat forms. Your experience and power will be valuable to the Republic in this committee, as any battle you are in virtually guarantees victory for the Jedi.

The Trinity Papers (2011 - present) (2016). Trinity College Digital Repository, Hartford, CT. https://digitalrepository.trincoll.edu/trinitypapers/45 The Jedi of Japan David Linden The West’s image today of the Japanese samurai derives in large part from the works of Japanese film directors whose careers flourished in the period after the Second World War. Foremost amongst these directors was Akira Kurosawa and it is from his films that Western audiences grew to appreciate Japanese warriors and the main heroes and villains in the Star Wars franchise were eventually born. George Lucas and the first six films of the Star Wars franchise draw heavily from Kurosawa’s films, the role of the samurai in Japanese culture, and Bushido—their code. In his book, The Samurai Films of Akira Kurosawa, David Desser explains how Kurosawa himself was heavily influenced by Western culture and motifs and this is reflected in his own samurai films which “embod[y] the tensions between Japanese culture and the new American ways of the occupation” (Desser. 4). As his directorial style matured during the late forties, Kurosawa closely examined Western films and themes such as those of John Ford, and sought to apply the same themes, techniques and character development to Japanese films and traditions.

  • QUEST 2: Clone Armies ORIGINS – Genes
ORIGINS – Genes QUEST 2: Clone armies Teacher notes Curriculum links: English, Drama, Maths Key Stage: Key Stage 2 Zone Relevance: Origins Aim: This activity looks at the concept of cloning. It requires pupils to think about the implications of cloning. It is a sophisticated concept which is better suited to high ability pupils and older year groups. Background: The stormtroopers are clones of Jango Fett, who was a bounty hunter killed by Jedi Master, Mace Windu. One of his clones, which he raises as his son (Boba Fett) also rises to be a bounty hunter, and captures Han Solo for Jabba the Hutt. Although he doesn’t have many lines or scenes in the films, Boba Fett developed a considerable cult following. The clone troopers were cloned for one purpose, to be an army that copied the qualities of a bounty hunter: agility, problem solving, and coordination, while being able to be controlled and loyal to the commands of their master. What is cloning? Cloning is the creation of an organism that is genetically identical to another organism. The cloning that is used to create the clone army in Star Wars is a technological process in which an individual is grown using the genetic material of another individual. This process has been done by scientists here on Earth. In 1997, Dolly the Sheep was cloned from the genetic material of another sheep. Since this breakthrough scientists have used this technology to clone other animals. Some plant species can also produce clones by creating runners or seeds that grow into new organisms that are genetically identical to the parent individual.

  • Boba Fett 6: Pursuit
Star Wars Boba Fett Book 6 Pursuit by Elizabeth Hand CHAPTER ONE Death is silence: eternal, dark, colorless, without form or meaning, Boba Fett had watched his father, Jango Fett, die, murdered by the hated Jedi Mace Windu. At the time Boba had felt only grief and rage. In the years that followed, he felt sorrow, the dull constant ache of missing his father. It was an ache that had receded somewhat over the last few years, But it had never disappeared. The one thing Boba had never felt - had never even allowed himself to imagine - was what it would feel like to actually die. He had never believed he would experience death firsthand - But now Boba Fett was dead. His motionless form lay in a dark, twisting tunnel inside Mazariyan, the immense, mazelike fortress of the Separatist Tech genius Wat Tambor. Outside the citadel's walls, a fierce battle raged.
