The Venetian Macao to Host Asia Rainbow TV Awards in June Integrated Resort Bringing Another Star-Studded Awards Show to Macao Press Release The Venetian Macao to Host Asia Rainbow TV Awards in June Integrated resort bringing another star-studded awards show to Macao (Macao, April 30, 2014) – The first Asian television awards show presented by China, the Asia Rainbow TV Awards will be held in Macao for the first time this year, hosted at the Venetian Theatre June 26. With SONIQ as the exclusive title sponsor, and The Venetian® Macao as special sponsor, the Asia Rainbow TV Awards is known as Asia's version of Hollywood's Emmy Awards, and is the first awards show for the television industry to be held at The Venetian Macao – already a veteran in hosting several awards shows for the film industry. The launch ceremony for the 2nd Asia Rainbow TV Awards was held April 22 in Beijing, and was officiated by Sa Rina, Vice President of the Artist Commission of China Radio and Television Association; celebrities such as Wang Kuirong, Liu Peiqi, and Sun Qian; and also representatives from 23 major television stations throughout China. “Sands China is bringing Asia’s most outstanding television talent to Macao by sponsoring and hosting this awards show in June, as an important part of our multi-tiered entertainment strategy,” said Toh Hup Hock, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of Sands China Ltd. “With events like the Asia Rainbow TV Awards we aim to strengthen Macao’s position as one of the region’s top entertainment destinations for superstars events and to establish our city as a world centre of tourism and leisure.” This year’s awards show is organised by Hong Kong Television Association and the TV Production Committee of China Radio & TV Academy; supported by Macao Foundation, Guangzhou Broadcasting Network, Guangzhou Broadcasting Network Group, and Guangzhou Jiwen Entertainment Co., Ltd; co-organised by the Big City Television Alliance Operating Committee of China; and promoted by the 23 participating major television stations. The Asia Rainbow TV Awards aims to honour outstanding television production and talent, strengthen communication and cooperation in TV programme production among Asian countries, promote the development of the Asian TV production industry, showcase Page 1 of 4 distinguished Asian TV programmes and accelerate its exposure to the international market. Various awards including those for Best Male Actor, Best Female Actor and Best Screenwriter will be presented at the event at The Venetian Theatre June 26. ABSTRACT TV arrived in Singapore on 15 February 1963 and since its inaugural launch Singapore’s TV industry has undoubtedly developed over the years. In the context of the four theories of the press, it can be quickly concluded that Singapore’s TV industry is Authoritarian by its regulative nature. Despite being a democratic country, the freedom to express freely what is on one’s mind through the use of TV as a medium is still extremely restrictive. As a result, there are many reasons as to why Singapore’s TV industry is still moderately unadventurous, especially where censorship is concerned. As the TV industry in Singapore is operated and fully controlled by the government, the content that appears on TV is usually highly censored, scripted to precision in accordance with the MDA guidelines, non-offensive and contain the usage of propaganda. This paper seeks to give a brief insight into not only the history and transformation of Singapore’s television (TV) industry to what it is today, but also to better understand how the said country’s TV industry currently operates, and how their content is produced as well as the impacts it has around the region.
