  • "Tick Tock Tick Tock – It's Tommy Tucker Time" by Opal Louis Nations
"Tick Tock Tick Tock – It's Tommy Tucker Time" by Opal Louis Nations During the winter of 1963-64, over an eleven-week period, Tucker's infectious little toe- tapping dance floor ditty, "Hi-heel Sneakers," climbed steadily up the R & B charts, stopping just short of breaking the Top Ten. Had this blues-shaded song cracked the summit's short list, Tucker's fortunes would possibly have taken him into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Since then, "Hi-heel Sneakers" has been covered by everyone who is anyone, (one-hundred-and-fifty plus versions at last count), most notably Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr., Cleo Lane, José Feliciano, and the idiosyncratic Rahsaan Roland Kirk with whom Tucker spent his early career out in the hinterlands. For all this, Tucker ended up a forgotten man. At the time of his death back on January 22, 1982, Tan magazine in its February issue of that year confused Tucker with his then prominent namesake, Los Angeles bailbondsman and former owner of the famous Playroom Club whose mugshot was published in place of the pianist/singer/songwriter from Springfield, Ohio. Likewise, Joel Whitburn in his Top R&B Singles 1942-88 book has Tucker confused with the rockabilly teen idol namesake from Memphis who recorded "Miller's Cave" for Hi Records in the early 1960s and died disillusioned in a fire at his home in 1985. The real Tommy Tucker was born Robert Higginbotham in Springfield, Ohio on March 5, 1933. His father, Leroy, played piano in country honky tonks, his mother, Mary Woods, hailed from Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Blue Rhythms ----- six LIVES --~- IN RHYTHM AND BLUES Chip Deffaa University of Ilinois Press Urbana and Cbicago copyright 1996 1 --- ----.----------------. RUTH BROWN ------ -_.__... --------- "Nobody knows you. " "We're going to do 'SI. Louis Blues.' There's no arrangement. I want everybody's input for what they think is best," Ruth Brown tells the musicians gathered around her in the studio. Guitarist Rodney Jones asks if he might switch to banjo for this number; she nods. She tells trumpeter Spanky Davis he is to start it out, specifying: "I want an in- tro that won't give away what I'm going to sing-not the melody." She directs the other musicians to hold off until she reaches a certain point in the lyrics. Davis experiments with possible introductions. In the control room, producer Ralph Jungheim says to engineer John Eargle: "Let's roll tape." They don't inform the musicians they're rolling. Davis settles on an intro, and Brown intones, ('I hate to see. II i watch the unfolding of this song in fascination, marveling at the expressiveness she can bring to a line like "if I'm feeling tomorrow like i feel today"-a line that takes on added meaning because I know that in recent days, due to the tlare-up of an injury, her legs have been giving her much pain. In fact, yesterday, the first day of the recording session, she had been in a wheelchair. Now she repeats the line, coming in just a bit later than you'd expect and thereby build- ing anticipation; she's calling out now, testifying with an unexpect- ed urgency: "If I'm fee/iiig tomorrow." This timeless blues is a perfect song for Brown.

King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 by John Jason Collins Wilson A dissertation Presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © John Jason Collins Wilson, May 2013 ABSTRACT King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 John Jason Collins Wilson Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Doctor Catharine Wilson Reggae music facilitated a cultural dialogue between Jamaican migrant and Canadian host in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s. Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.

1964 ALBUM TRACKS January 1964 LP (The ) Ventures In Space Dolton BST 8027 Stereo/ BLP 2027 Mono As Dave Burke has illustrated 1, in November 1963 The Ventures assembled a number of musicians to help put together this new album, which drew upon a range of material, hits and non-hits, small group and orchestral, film and TV; there were four tunes from within the core group, and a couple from close associates (Danny Hamilton; Julius Wechter and his wife Cissy). Sessioneers we have met before included Billy Strange, David Gates and Leon Russell. There was also one Ray Lanbiny ( aka Roy Lanham, a guitarist) together with horn player Bill Hinshaw (see p.21 below), and two others whose contribution was of especial importance. They were: (i) Orville ‘Red’ Rhodes on steel guitar. This celebrated musician, who also as it happened took a keen interest in amps, fuzzboxes and other gadgetry, was one of the most distinguished sessioneers of his generation. Had he contributed to The Ventures’ Country Classics set he might have brought the overall sound closer to the fuller, 1 mature form of country rock we find in recordings of The Byrds from 1968 on (as it was, Rhodes would make a stunning contribution to their glorious The Notorious Byrds Brothers ). (ii) Julius Wechter, percussionist and composer, was associated very closely with Herb Alpert’s albums, for which he is said to have provided many of the arrangements without necessarily receiving due credit for doing so. (Wechter himself often related how he was paid 15 dollars for playing on ‘The Lonely Bull’!) The part he played in this Ventures project is likely to have been very considerable: see below.
