Big B Launched Mohammad Rafi's Biography Big B launched Mohammad Rafi’s Biography By : INVC Team Published On : 16 Dec, 2012 09:30 PM IST INVC,, Mumbai,, Amitabh Bachchan, Dolly Thakur, Mandira Thakur, Barkha Roy, and Piyush Jha were invited as specials guests at the book launch ofMohammed ‘ Rafi, My Abba – A Memoir’. Publishing House Westland Ltd unveiled the book at Hotel Taj Lands End in Bandra, Mumbai.Rupa Srikumar and A. K. Srikumar translated the book from Hindi into English, catering to a worldwide audience. Yasmin Rafi, the daughter-in-law of renowned playback singerMohammed Rafi has penned down the original book in Hindi about his life and musical journey. The Hindi edition published in association with Yatra books was simultaneously released on the same day. Yasmin, a British based writer from London, shared some of her best memories as a fan and family member of theRafi clan. She described her transition from ‘fan to family,’ as the main source of inspiration for the book, which she started writing five years ago. In the biographyYasmin Rafi recollects the singers early days, and sheds some light about his personality, his private life and his deep fondness for cars. The book filled with anecdotes reveals the strong relationshipRafi had with most people in the industry. She also writes about the differences that Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar briefly had over royalty issues. Yasmin who married Khalid Rafi, the son of one of Bollywood’s most legendary singer, travelled to India to officially launch the book. Yasmin was accompanied by son Rashid Rafi who was there to support his mother at the book launch. Big B, the perfect gentleman quickly took control at the press conference supporting and protecting Yasmin who was quite nervous and media shy. Though Yasmin did answer some of the questions, it was Big B who addressed the media confidently saying: “We know Rafi Saab from his work, his creativity, but it’s always wonderful to have an insiders view on a legend, when it comes from a member of the family it makes it even more exciting and certainly more valuable.” Amitabh who himself is a great admirer of Mohammed Rafi’s music, spoke about the late singer: “I have no words to describe his great personality. We have all grown up as young children listening to his voice. His contribution to the film industry and the great music he gave to all of us will remain with us forever.” Big B said he has utmost respect for Rafi, “because he lived through a time and performed through a time when he was not supported by the modern technology that we have today.” Amitabh spoke ofRafi ’s versatility, recalling how the singer easily adapted his voice according to the artist he was singing for. www.internationalnewsandviews.com “Before singing a song for a particular actor, he used to ask, ‘Which actor am I singing this for?’ Then he would alter his voice or do something. Whether he was singing for Shammiji [Kapoor], whether he was singing for Dilipsaab [Kumar], you felt that yes, this is Dilip Kumar singing or Shammi Kapoor singing. This is a quality which is very rare among the playback singers,” he said. Rafi is known for his classic songs picturised Amitabhon Bachchan. Amitabh and Neetu Singh appeared in the romantic number ‘Tumse Door Rehke Humne Maana’ sang by Rafi-Lata in Narendra Bedi’s Adalat [1976]. Rafi in his expressive manner did the vocals for the emotional track ‘Mere Dost Kissa Ye Kya Ho Gaya’ for Amitabh in Yash Johar’s Dostana. This song was nominated for the Filmfare Awards in 1980. Towards the latter part of Rafi’s career, director Manmohan Desai used his magical voice to playback for Amitabh Bachchan in the films Suhaag [1979], Naseeb [1981] and Desh Premee [1982]. For the filmSuhaag , Rafi sang quite a few hit numbers. The songs from the film included:‘Atthara Baras Ki’ [Rafi-Lata], ‘Teri Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Ae Yaar Sun Yaari Teri’ [Rafi-Asha and Shailendra Singh]. Rafi’s popular track Jon‘ Jani Janardan’ saw a number of artists gathering onscreen withBig B in the second half of the song. Amitabh Bachchan had the honour to sing with Rafi Saab in the unforgettable song ‘Chal Mere Bhai Tere Haath Jorta Hoon’ in the same film. The song was picturised onBig B and Rishi Kapoor. The last Rafi song, picturised on Amitabh was the very thoughtful peace message ‘Mere Desh Premiyo Apas Mein Prem Karo’ from the film Desh Premee [1982]. At the launch family, friends and artists remembering Mohammed Rafi, shared their association with him, amidst melodious tunes playing in the background. Special guests included the likes of veteran theatre actress Dolly Thakur, veteran model Mandira Thakur, film-maker Barkha Roy and film-director Piyush Jha. Writer Salim Khan, who was lined up as one of the speakers at the event failed to attend. He was due to release the Hindi version of the book, titled ‘Hamare Abba Kuch Yaadein’ at this event. This book is a glowing portrait of one of the best singers the world has ever known. There is no doubt had Rafi lived longer he would have recorded many more popular songs for Bollywod Amitabhlegend Bachchan. From one legend to another, Big B together with the Rafi family presented a fitting tribute to the man with the golden voice. • Enchantment of the Mind Preface
PREFACE 1 March 2004 marked the tenth anniversary of the death of Manmohan Desai. A fall from the terrace of his Khetwadi home brought the 57-year old filmmaker’s life to an end in the spring of 1994. The suspected suicide came as a shock both to those nearest to him and to the film world as a whole, as testified in countless articles and tributes in the Indian and international press in the month following his death. The articles that appeared spanned the gamut of reactions: praise for Desai as a man and as a filmmaker, heartfelt remembrances from those who had worked with him, indignation and disbelief over the circumstances of his death, and speculation over possible motives for suicide— depression over severe backaches being most frequently offered as an explanation. At that time, I could not help feeling a personal sadness over his death. I had, after all, spent the better part of four years studying Manmohan Desai’s work before completing an initial version of this book in 1987. It was, therefore, consoling to have immediate and direct evidence of Manmohan Desai’s work living on beyond his death, as happened one day in 1994 when I walked into an Indian carry-out restaurant in Paris and saw a colorful dance scene from Dharam-Veer playing on the conspicuously placed VCR. Those waiting in line stood transfixed before the screen, their faces radiating joy. Curious to know if Desai’s work had crossed the generations, I asked a young man in his twenties if he knew who had directed the film.

  • 100 Essential Indian Films, by Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Datta
Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 21, 2021, pp. 239–243 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.21.21 100 Essential Indian Films, by Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Datta. Rowman & Littlefield, 2019, 283 pp. Darshana Chakrabarty Among the many film industries of South Asia, the Indian film industry is the most prolific, specifically Hindi language film, more commonly known as Bollywood, which produces almost four hundred films annually. Bollywood films dominate the national market. These films have also been exported successfully to parts of the Middle East, Africa, and the Asiatic regions of the former Soviet Union, as well as to Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US. The success of these films abroad is largely down to the presence of Indian communities living in these regions; as the conventional melodramatic plot structures, dance numbers and musicals tend to deter Western audiences. Within India and abroad “the traditional division between India’s popular cinema and its ‘art’ or ‘parallel’ cinema, modelled after India's most prestigious film-director Satyajit Ray, often produced the uncritical assumption that Indian films are either ‘Ray or rubbish’” (Chaudhuri 137). Recently, Indian film criticism has begun focusing on popular Indian cinema, assessing the multi-discursive elements of the cinematic creations. Bollywood “gained prominence within academia due to its growing popularity and unique manner of glorifying Indian familial values” (Sinha 3). From a history and origin of Indian motion pictures to selecting films that best represent the diversity, integrity and heritage of the nation, 100 Essential Indian Films by Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Dutta is a concise book on Indian cinema for connoisseurs and for film enthusiasts taking an interest in India’s classic and contemporary cinema.

The state of emer T gency that Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared in 1975, allowing her to rule by decree, at last came to an end. During those twenty-one months of autocratic rule, the government's attempts to en force order led to many excesses: political opponents were imprisoned, the press was censored, and civil liberties were curtailed. When Mrs. Gandhi finallycalled for elections, the political opposition joined forcesto mount a campaign on the theme of "democracy versus dictatorship." The elec tions delivered Mrs. Gandhi a resounding loss and brought in the first non-Congress Party government since Independence. The mood of the times was mixed. There was a renewed feeling of hope, but also pent-up frustration and resentment. Going to the movies gave the nation a way to escape from this trou bled reality.

BOOTH University of Auckland TraditionalContent and NarrativeStruc- ture in the Hindi CommercialCinema Abstract The commercial Hindi cinema has been subjected to domestic and foreign criticism for its exceptionally formulaic and stereotypical feature productions. These productions, however, have their sources in the oral and written epics and the popular dramatic genres of traditional Indian culture. Content borrowed from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and other pan-Indian tales frequently enlarges and reinterprets the char- acters and plots of the commercial cinema. The disconcerting emotional melange pre- sented by Hindi films is consistent with aesthetic theories of emotional content found in Indian epic narrative. The stereotyping of characters and of interpersonal relationships reflects the influence of traditional Indian epic structure, while the growing frequency of self-reflexive humor in the medium suggests yet another connection between contempo- rary Hindi cinema and the historically powerful traditions of Indian drama and narra- tive.
