How Coolness Affects the Desirability of Products and Services
What makes a brand cool? How coolness affects the desirability of products and services. James Byrne Masters in Marketing National College of Ireland 1 Abstract The subject of branding and its management is of increasing importance to marketers. Advertisers value cool brands. They help contribute brand equity, market dominance and sales. Understanding what makes a brand cool can enable marketers with their brand positioning and marketing communications. The purpose of this study was to examine how consumers consider coolness and individuality in appraising brands. It involved the investigation of customer’s perceptions of brands in relation to their perception. The relationship between the perceived coolness of brands and their individuality was measured though a range of characteristics – degree of innovation, originality, authenticity and uniqueness. Through a quantitative approach via a consumer survey the paper established the factors relating to coolness and individuality among consumers that can enable products and services to become more attractive and desirable to consumers and in so doing provide strategic insights into prospective brand development along with broader implications for marketing and communications strategy. Sixteen new world auction records were set including for artists such as Jeff Koons, Lucian Freud, Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince and Gerhard Richter. The sale was 94% sold by value and 93% by lot. Buyers were 51% American, 26% European, 7% Asian and 16% others. “Tonight’s auction surpassed all of our expectations. It was a robust, sophisticated and well-edited auction, which established multiple records for the most significant artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The sale realized the second highest total ever for the field and it provided excitement, awe and energy,” said Marc Porter, President Christie’s Americas. “In a market as watchful and alert as today’s, this sale was a clear and resounding vote of confidence of a deep and global client base, which is willing to spend millions of dollars on great works of art.” Mark Rothko’s superbly magical and reflective work never fails to stun one in its serene but almost tangible power. Untitled (Red Blue Orange) realized $34,201,000, second only to the Rockefeller Rothko which sold for $72 million in May of this year, and No.7 (Dark Over Light), 1954 fetched $21,041,000. Both derive from Rothko’s classic period and they reflect the artist’s spare but emotive vocabulary of luminous rectangles stacked and set afloat within a radiantly hued ground. -

Consumerism, Art, and Identity in American Culture
ABSTRACT OKAY, MAYBE YOU ARE YOUR KHAKIS: CONSUMERISM, ART, AND IDENTITY IN AMERICAN CULTURE by Meghan Triplett Bickerstaff This thesis explores the evolving relationship between the cultural realms of art and the marketplace. The practice of “coolhunting,” or finding original fashions and ideas to co-opt and market to a mainstream audience, is increasingly being used in corporate America. The Toyota Scion and its advertising campaign are examples of such commodification, and they are considered within the context of Roland Marchand and Thomas Frank’s histories and theories of advertising. The novels Pattern Recognition by William Gibson and The Savage Girl by Alex Shakar both feature main characters who are coolhunters, and both approach the problem of the imposition of capital into the realm of art but formulate responses to the problem very differently. This literature offers insight into the important relationship between consumption and identity in American culture in the early twenty-first century.
