THE SEMINOLE INDIAN WARS (1814-1858) Compiled by Brian Brindle Version 0.1 © 2013 Dadi&Piombo This supplement was designed to the cover three small American wars fought between 1814-1858 known today as the “Seminole Wars”. These Wars were primary gorilla style wars fought between the Seminole Indians and the U.S. army . The wars played out in a series of small battles and skirmishes as U.S. Army chased bands of Seminole worriers through the swamps IofN Florida. Supreme Court of Florida FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Craig Waters 850-414-7641 [email protected] Supreme Court launches podcast program ‘Beyond the Bench’ TALLAHASSEE – A good conversation covers a lot of ground – and that can be heard in the inaugural podcast released this week by the Florida Supreme Court, which features Chief Justice Jorge Labarga talking with Leon County Judge Nina Ashenafi-Richardson about why courts must communicate with the people they serve. During their conversation, the two jurists also discuss the surprising benefit of jury service, Florida’s long-standing policy of allowing cameras in the courtroom, the importance of courts that are impartial and independent – and a couple of good movies. The podcast series, “Beyond the Bench,” can be reached from the front page of the Court’s website, www.floridasupremecourt.org. Florida’s sweeping Court Communication Plan, which the state’s high court unanimously approved in late 2015, calls for Florida’s courts to consider taking advantage of recent advances in technology and communications, such as social media and podcasting. The plan also emphasizes the importance of time-honored principles of effective communication, such as building and maintaining relationships of trust with your audience. “It’s imperative that people get to see how justice is being done,’’ Labarga says at one point during the podcast, repeating a point he has made before. “It’s not just that justice is done – it has to be seen to be done.” Ashenafi-Richardson tells Labarga that “the word is getting out on Facebook, Twitter … it’s been exciting to see our circuits using technology to allow citizens and our young people to learn more about the courts and what we do.” The Florida Supreme Court launched its Facebook page in the fall of 2016 and joined Twitter in 2009. -

Supreme Court of Florida No. AOSC17-12 IN RE: COURT APPOINTED EXPERT WITNESS SERVICES IN FLORIDA’S TRIAL COURTS ADMINISTRATIVE ORDER In Florida’s trial courts, court appointed expert witnesses provide independent expert opinions concerning scientific or technical matters in dispute and provide essential support to the adjudication process. Expert witnesses are required to provide expert evaluations concerning the physical, psychological, or mental condition of persons affected by or subject to the dispositional orders of the court in matters involving a fundamental interest or right. The appointment of expert witnesses implicates a variety of practices related to both the management and utilization of resource availability and diverse needs for expert witnesses in Florida’s trial courts. To ensure effective and efficient provision of court appointed expert witness services, the Court directed the Commission on Trial Court Performance and Accountability (TCP&A) through In re: Commission On Trial Court Performance and Accountability, Fla. Admin. Order No. AOSC12-25 (July 2, 2012), and directed the Trial Court Budget Commission, in accordance with Florida Rule of Judicial Administration 2.230, to establish operational and budgeting policies in the use of court appointed expert witnesses in Florida’s trial courts. To address these directives, the commissions created two workgroups comprised of judges, trial court administrators, court administration employees, and experts to examine current court expert witness operations across the state. In June 2014, after an extensive interactive review process with the trial courts, the TCP&A developed a report titled Recommendations for the Provision of Court Appointed Expert Witness Services in Florida’s Trial Courts. -

European diseases and the losses from nearly constant colonial warfare had reduced the population to a mere handful. Bands from various tribes in the southeastern United States pressured by colonial expansion began moving into the unoccupied lands in Florida. These primarily Creek tribes were called Cimarrones by the Spanish “strays” or “wanderers.” This is the probable origin of the name Seminole. Runaway slaves or “Maroons” also began making their way into Florida where they were regularly granted freedom by the Spanish. Many joined the Indian villages and integrated into the tribes. Early Conflict During the American Revolution the British, who controlled Florida from 1763 to 1784, recruited the Seminoles to raid rebel frontier settlements in Georgia. Both sides engaged in a pattern of border raiding and incursion which continued sporadically even after Florida returned to Spanish control after the war. Despite the formal treaties ending the war the Seminoles remained enemies of the new United States. Growing America At the beginning of the 19th century the rapidly growing American population was pushing onto the frontiers in search of new land. Many eyes turned southward to the Spanish borderlands of Florida and Texas. Several attempts at “filibustering,” private or semi-official efforts to forcibly take territory, occurred along the frontiers. The Patriot War of 1812 was one such failed American effort aimed at taking East Florida. -

These wars, which took place between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, were driven by many forces, ranging from the clash of global empires to the basic need to protect one’s home and family. They were part of the great American economic and territorial expansion of the nineteenth century, and were greatly influenced by the national debate over the issue of slavery. In particular, the Second Seminole War stands out as the nation’s longest, costli- est, and deadliest Indian war. Lasting almost seven years, the conflict cost thousands of lives and millions of dollars, yet faded from the nation’s collective memory soon after the fighting ended. It is a story that should not have been forgotten, a story that can teach us lessons that are still relevant today. It is in hopes of restoring a portion of that lost mem- ory that the Seminole Wars Foundation offers this short history of one of our nation’s longest wars. Seminole Origins The ancestors of the Seminole Indians were primarily Creek Indians from Georgia and Alabama who migrated to Florida during the 18th century after the decimation of the aboriginal natives under Spanish rule. -

BOWEN A Thesis submitted to the Department of History in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with Honors in the Major Degree Awarded: Spring, 2019 Introduction On January 11th, 1861, Governor Madison S. Perry met with the state’s secession commissioners on the east portico of the state capitol building to witness and confer Florida’s official Ordinance of Secession that had been passed the previous day in the Convention of the People of Florida. This public ceremony officially began the process of separating Florida from the federal union of the United States and established the state as an independent republic. In the coming weeks, what was the secession convention would transform into the Constitutional Convention of 1861 to establish a reformed government in Florida similar to the U.S. Constitution. The following month, delegates would be sent to the Montgomery Congress to commit Florida to a union between the Southern slaveholding states and draft a constitution for the Confederate States of America. Through the course of these events, the delegates of the state convention married Florida to the rest of the South and to a bloody war with a massive loss of life, defeat at the hands of the very government they sought to separate from, and a Reconstruction government protecting the rights of newly emancipated slaves.
