1 Cougar Basketball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

Founded in 1964 by the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University held its first classes in October of 1968 on the former Lakeholm farm in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The land was purchased by public subscription and donated to the university. With an enrollment of around 2,200 students, MVNU is the official university of the East Central Educational Region of the Church of the Nazarene. The primary responsibility for sponsorship and support of the university is charged to the Nazarene congregations in Ohio, West Virginia, and the eastern half of Kentucky. The aspiration of the university is that academic and student life activities be integrated in a Wesleyan holiness tradition to facilitate character, value, and cultural development to improve the quality of life. This is expressed in the motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve." The university offers more than 80 academic programs and a full range of pre-professional programs while granting associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. MVNU offers 11 intercollegiate sports (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf), and students can take part in an active intramural program. The Campus

The MVNU campus consists of 400 tree-filled acres on the Lakeholm farm. The gently rolling fields, bordered on the rear by the Kokosing River, constitute a campus of natural beauty. The university buildings are of Williamsburg colonial design blending well with the site and complementing Mount Vernon's reputation as "Ohio's Colonial City." Four dorms (Pioneer, Oakwood, Galloway, and Redwood) and seven apartment complexes (Maplewood, Elmwood, Rosewood, Cedar, Birch, Spruce, and Cypress) provide quality living quarters for residential students. Major buildings include: Faculty, Founders, and Regents Halls (three large classroom buildings), the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Complex, the Jetter School of Business, the Hyson Campus Center, the Lakeholm Administration Building, the Physical Education Center, Donoho Recreation Center, and Prince Student Union, the Thorne Library/Learning Resource Center, and the Jennie K. Moore Family and Consumer Science Building. The university also holds classes in the Buchwald Center and Hunter Hall in downtown Mount Vernon as well. 2 Cougar Basketball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

In addition to the central campus, the university owns a 70-acre tract of woodland just six miles northeast of the city. Bachelor’s degrees are available in: Nursing, Accounting, Business Administration, Applied Business Technology, Management, Marketing, International Business, Early Childhood Education, Middle Childhood Education, Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Life Science Education, Physical Science Education, Music Education, Physical Education/Health, Spanish Education, Visual Arts Education, Integrated Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, Exercise Studies, Sports Management, Art, Music, Communication, Broadcasting, Drama, Graphic Design, English, Professional Writing, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Allied Health Programs, Medical Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Children’s Ministries, Educational Ministries, Youth Ministries, Philosophy, Religion, History, Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Sociology. We had a little bit of an injury bug in preseason, but we are doing well and the guys are buying in to we want to play both offensively and defensively. We are all about the process, which is getting a little better every day and hopefully a month from now we’ll have made even more progress.” First year Head Coach Jared Ronai inherits a program that went 7-22 overall and 4-14 in the always tough Crossroads League a season ago. The Cougars lost Matt Anglea and Caleb Williams (11.1 PPG and 4.3 RPG) to graduation, but also have some key new players and returners who have the poten- tial to fill the void. The Cougars have a strong group of returners, led by senior guard Martell Medley. Medley paced the team in 2013-14 with 16.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Medley was named to the Cross- roads League All-Newcomer and Honorable Mention Teams. In addition, he was selected to the NCCAA East Region First Team and was an NCCAA Honorable Mention All-American. Senior Bryan Redic is also a key returner and will look to help anchor the middle from the forward position. Redic finished last season averaging 13.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Redic was an NCCAA East Region First Team selection and was also an NCCAA Scholar Athlete. Junior Eric Roby, who battled through some injuries last year, is back for his third season in an MVNU uniform. Roby played in 29 games and averaged 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, leading to a spot on the Crossroads League Honorable Mention Team and the Crossroads League All-Newcomer Team. Martell, Redic, and Roby were three of the top four scorers on the team last season which means the team will have a good nucleus to build around. In the middle, sophomore Patrick Lucas returns for his second season and newcomer Jordi Mas will also help anchor the paint. Lucas played in 18 games as a freshman where he averaged 3.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Mas, a freshman from Barcelona, Spain, will provide a physical pres- ence that opposing teams will have a hard time dealing with. Both players have made tremendous strides during the preseason and will be ready to go on Tuesday night. Three other newcomers also have the potential to make an immediate impact on the team this season. Freshmen Isaiah McQueen and Joey Schmitz along with transfer Trey Vaughn, who played at Ohio Christian University last season will help bolster a very talented roster. McQueen prepped at Corner- stone Christian Academy where he averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game during his junior and senior seasons. Schmitz spent his high school career at Bloom-Career where he is third in school history in career points scored (1,297). He averaged 19 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. Vaughan helped lead Ohio Christian to an NCCAA National Championship and averaged 13.1 points per game. He was also named to the NCCAA All-Region Second Team. Following the opener against Grace Bible College on Tuesday, the Cougars will battle Concor- dia University (Mich.) and Andrews University on Friday and Saturday at the Grace College (Ind.) Invita- tional. MVNU then returns home to play Siena Heights University on November 4th and will host Indiana Tech University on Homecoming November 8th. Other non-conference contests include showdowns with Shawnee State University, Indiana University-East, Kent State-Tuscarawas, Ohio Christian University, Cedarville University, Roosevelt University, Indiana University-South, and an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Cleveland State University. Crossroads League play will feature home and away games against the nine other confer- ence schools. Indiana Wesleyan University is the defending NAIA Division II National Champion and is the preseason favorite to contend for the Crossroads League title, while Bethel (Ind.) College and Saint Francis (Ind.) are also expected to be at the top of the standings. Huntington (Ind.) University, Taylor (Ind.) University, Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, Goshen (Ind.) College, Marian (Ind.) University, and Grace Col- lege (Ind.) will also all provide stiff competition for the Cougars in the rugged 18-game conference slate. “We want to develop our culture here and have our players not only buy into what we want to do on the floor, but off the floor as well which will be a big key for us,” Ronai added. “I’m a process guy and we are going to focus on getting better, building relationships, and building our culture each and every day. I think if we do that the results will eventually come.” 12 Cougar Basketball BASKETBALL FACILITIES The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team moved into brandThe new, Mount state-of-the-art Vernon Nazarene Ariel Arena University on Novembermen’s 8, basketball2013 with anteam 81- 62 movedvictory intoover brand the University new, state of- Akron-Wayneof-the-art Ariel College. The Crossroads League currently consists of 10 institutions located in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio: Bethel (Ind.) College, Goshen (Ind.) College, Grace (Ind.) College, Huntington (Ind.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian (Ind.) University, Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, and Taylor (Ind.) University. The purpose of the Crossroads League is to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and to promote sportsmanship. The conference sponsors championships in 14 sports (seven for men and seven for women). Crossroads League student athletes and teams also make their mark on the NAIA national level by virtue of national championships, All-Americans, Scholar- Athletes, national rankings, and statistical leaders. For complete information on the conference as well as up-to-date standings, statistics, and stories for each sport, go to: www.crossroadsleague.com

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day – be it racial integration in the ‘40s and ‘50s or establishing the first women’s championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited. 16 Cougar Basketball 2013MVNU’S-2014 SEASON AFFILIATIONS OUTLOOK
