Abstract Background: Among metazoans, retention of functional diet-derived chloroplasts (kleptoplasty) is known only from the sea slug taxon Sacoglossa (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia). Intracellular maintenance of plastids in the slug's digestive epithelium has long attracted interest given its implications for understanding the evolution of endosymbiosis. However, photosynthetic ability varies widely among sacoglossans; some species have no plastid retention while others survive for months solely on photosynthesis. We present a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for the Sacoglossa and a survey of kleptoplasty from representatives of all major clades. We sought to quantify variation in photosynthetic ability among lineages, identify phylogenetic origins of plastid retention, and assess whether kleptoplasty was a key character in the radiation of the Sacoglossa. -

This study was carried out, through a total of 271 scuba dives, from 2017 to the beginning of 2020 in four sites located along the Ionian coasts of Sicily: Catania, Aci Trezza, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla. Through a photographic data collection, 95 taxa, representing 17.27% of all Mediterranean marine Heterobranchia, were reported. The order with the highest number of found species was that of Nudibranchia. Among the study areas, Catania, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla had not a remarkable difference in the number of species, while Aci Trezza had the lowest number of species. Moreover, among the 95 taxa, four species considered rare and six non-indigenous species have been recorded. Since the presence of a high diversity of sea slugs in a relatively small area, the central-eastern coast of Sicily could be considered a zone of high biodiversity for the marine Heterobranchia fauna. Cummings1 Abstract Background: The impact of predator-prey interactions on the evolution of many marine invertebrates is poorly understood. Since barriers to genetic exchange are less obvious in the marine realm than in terrestrial or freshwater systems, non-allopatric divergence may play a fundamental role in the generation of biodiversity. In this context, shifts between major prey types could constitute important factors explaining the biodiversity of marine taxa, particularly in groups with highly specialized diets. However, the scarcity of marine specialized consumers for which reliable phylogenies exist hampers attempts to test the role of trophic specialization in evolution. In this study, RNA- Seq data is used to produce a phylogeny of Cladobranchia, a group of marine invertebrates that feed on a diverse array of prey taxa but mostly specialize on cnidarians. The broad range of prey type preferences allegedly present in two major groups within Cladobranchia suggest that prey type shifts are relatively common over evolutionary timescales. Results: In the present study, we generated a well-supported phylogeny of the major lineages within Cladobranchia using RNA-Seq data, and used ancestral state reconstruction analyses to better understand the evolution of prey preference. These analyses answered several fundamental questions regarding the evolutionary relationships within Cladobranchia, including support for a clade of species from Arminidae as sister to Tritoniidae (which both preferentially prey on Octocorallia). -

J. anulatus sp. nov. differs from other species of Janolus by its external and internal morphology. J. anulatus has a brown or white body with pink, white, and brown spots, smooth papillae epithelium at the base and papillated in the distal part, unbranched digestive gland ducts, smooth jaws, and smooth rachidian and lateral teeth. Frank The opisthobranch molluscs of Oregon have been little studied, and little is known about the biology of many species. The present study consisted of field and laboratory observations of Cape Arago opistho- branchs. Forty-six species were found, extending the range of six north- ward and two southward. New food records are presented for nine species; an additional 20 species were observed feeding on previously recorded prey. Development data are given for 21 species. Twenty produce plank- totrophic larvae, and Doto amyra produces lecithotrophic larvae, the first such example known from Eastern Pacific opisthobranchs. Hallaxa chani appears to be the first eudoridacean nudibranch known to have a subannual life cycle. Development, life cycles, food and competition, iv ranges, and the ecological role of nudibranchs are discussed. Nudi- branchs appear to significantly affect the diversity of the Cape Arago encrusting community. -

The Peruvian marine invertebrate fauna is thus far poorly investigated referring to sea slugs. From recent surveys along the entire Peruvian coast we present new distributional data on those 15 benthic opisthobranch gastropod species that were formerly known from Chilean waters. Our findings include 12 nudibranch, 1 ce- phalaspidean and 2 sacoglossan species. These are the first records for Peru of 7 species, such as Janolus rebeccae and Hancockia schoeferti. Known distributional ranges are extended to the north for 9 species, in case of Polycera priva for more than 3000 kilometres; the latter was formerly considered as a Magellanic species en- demic to southern Chilean fjords. Photographs of living specimens as well as de- scriptions of habitats and biological observations are given. We also present the first record of splanchnotrophid copepods from Peru, infesting the aeolid nudi- branch Phidiana lottini. Seasearch East Report 2019 This report summarises the activities of Seasearch in East Anglia during 2019 Swimming out to the Burlington gullies 600m North of Sheringham Esplanade, Norfolk in July We had a very late start to 2019, with the first record being an intertidal form from Lincolnshire on May 1st. Our last records of the year were both on December 31st; a live octopus washed up at Brancaster in Norfolk and a marina survey at Levington in Suffolk. Despite the late start, we managed a healthy 181 forms in total, a slight improvement on the year before. Of the forms received, 89 (49%) were Observation and 92 (51%) were the more detailed Survey forms. Several keen new trainees worked through the Observer training process and went on to take part in dives and intertidal surveys over the season, Divers preparing to take images for a 3D representation of the chalk reef including Louise Heinemann who went on to be our Seasearcher of the year, turning in Observation forms Lincolnshire and the Wash of a higher quality than many of the Survey forms received! Only 2 forms were received for Lincolnshire this year – an intertidal Observation form for Ingoldmells and Species highlights included Athanas nitescens, another for the colonisation array removed from the Iphimedia obesa, Hermaea bifida, Raniceps raninus SONDE buoy in the centre of the Wash. Sadly, and Lamellaria perspicua, all seen for only the second available dates and suitable weather failed to line up time since we started recording and a congregation of with the EIFCA for dives from their boats and their Scyliorrhinus canicula off East Runton late in the year. -
