THE ASSINIBOIA RACING CLUB (2017) By: John Field HBPA Board Member Founder of Assiniboia Racing Club

Introduction

The 2017 edition of the Assiniboia Racing Club (ARC) is set to hold its organizational meeting at 2 p.m., on December 11, 2016, in the Terrace Dining Room at Assiniboia Downs. The 2016 inaugural year of the racing club proved to mirror the real world of racing with its defeats and victories, disappointments and excitement. The 2016 Club members were an exceptionally good group of people, showing considerable maturity and class throughout the difficult times experienced by the Club early in the season, expressing consistent concern for the welfare of the Club’s horses, and being rewarded with an exciting end of season win.

The Purpose and Governance of the Racing Club

The purpose of the racing club is to attract new and previous owners into the industry, to allow people the chance to own a racehorse in a very low cost and low risk environment and at the same time provide the excitement, interest and educational experience of owning and racing a Thoroughbred. For $500 a person can buy a share in a racehorse and become a licensed owner, without the risk of incurring any further costs for the rest of the racing season. A Memorandum of Understanding provided to all members generally governs the operation of the Club. The Club is structured as a partnership with a Race Manager appointed by the HBPA. The purchase price of each share is deposited with the HBPA and transferred to the Manitoba Jockey Club once the racing season commences. No management or other fees are charged and the position of Race Manager is a volunteer position. Club members all become licensed owners. The manager, upon consultation with the membership, retains a trainer willing to train for the Club. The manager provides Club members with regular information via email about the horse and the finances of the Club. For example, Club members regularly receive copies of the bookkeeper’s Statement of Account showing the routine income and expenses of the operation. The trainer, of course, makes all normal day to day decisions relating to the care, management and racing of the horse. At the end of the season all funds to the credit of the Club are distributed on a per share basis back to the members, whether at a profit or a loss. The partnership is then dissolved, since the makeup of the Club will be different the following year. Members of the Club have preference in acquiring the Club’s horse at the end of the season. The welfare of the horse is of central concern in all decision making.

The Inaugural Year

The 2016 Club had 39 members holding 40 shares at $500 per share. The Club obtained a horse from a US. race track, and incurred the costs of moving the horse to ASD. Disaster struck when this horse was shown to have developed a knee joint fracture, which made it unsafe to continue the horse’s racing career. The membership was consulted at that point, and the overwhelming feeling was that the Club should find a good home for this horse, acquire another horse and continue racing as best we could. A good English riding stable home was found for the injured horse.

The Club’s funds were seriously depleted by this development but with the assistance of Woodbine trainers Dave Cotey and Larry Cappuccitti, a three-year-old maiden filly named Spanish Fowl (SF) was acquired. Her first few starts at ASD were on the shaky side with loading problems and uninspiring finishes in her first two starts. Trainer Tanya Lindsay however persevered and did an exceptional job with this filly. An equipment change was made for Spanish Fowl’s third start. That, and consistent care, resulted in a surprising performance in

6 which SF seemed to have all of a sudden understood what racing was all about. She finished a determined second in what turned out to be a key race. In her next start a week later SF ran well, only losing by a head. She continued to be fractious at the gate however and only started because of the patience and expertise of the gate crew. On the second last race day of the season SF loaded, for her, like a pro and despite stumbling at the gate, drew off to a nine and a half length win in 113 flat. To say that the owners were excited would be an understatement. A photo taken by the Insider shows a happy group of excited fans and owners three deep in the winner’s circle. Fortunately, one of the members of the Club who was new to racing that year, and who had developed a liking for SF, went out of his way prior to her last start to arrange winter board and training for the next year in the hopes of acquiring her. Ownership was transferred accordingly. This solved the perennial problem of finding a good home for the Club’s race horse. Good luck to both Spanish Fowl and her new owner in 2017. The Manitoba Jockey Club and the Insider Newsletter were very supportive throughout the 2016 season and continue to be so. The Manitoba Commission staff has been very helpful as well. The Club received television coverage from CTV, and was the subject of articles in the Winnipeg Free Press and the Canadian Thoroughbred Magazine.

The Experience of Other North American Racing Clubs

It appears that racing clubs are being created at many North American tracks. A brief review of other racing jurisdictions reveals a variety of different types of racing clubs. For example, in some clubs members are not required to be licensed. Some clubs are incorporated as non-profit entities where any earnings over and above the purchase price of the share, are donated to various charities. Some clubs charge very little and have very large memberships. Benefits of membership vary. However, almost all clubs have as their purpose the attraction of owners to the industry. These clubs seem to be reporting success in achieving their educational and entertainment goals. The racing operations of these clubs pretty well mirror the everyday ups and downs and successes and failures of the real racing world. For example the Canterbury Racing Club had a winner in their first start with their very first horse. However, on another occasion that club lost a horse to a $5000 claim. That horse went on to subsequently earn $100,000. The interesting and successful Emerald Downs Racing Club, which in 2016 had 2 horses, had one of their first year horses suffer a sesamoid bone injury which ended its racing career. That horse was given to a club member as a riding horse. The very successful Hastings Racing Club, which leases its racehorses, had a stakes win in its first year.

7 Churchill Downs Inc. introduced its first racing club in 2016, also as a way to provide a low risk, low cost experience in racehorse ownership. The Churchill Downs Racing Club offered 200 shares at $500 apiece in a horse to be purchased privately, trained and managed by D. Wayne Lukas. The club was organized as a not for profit social club and the club stressed that people should not register with the expectation of making a profit. The club has been highly successful with now several hundred shares sold and owning 2 stakes level two year olds. Critical to the success of all such clubs seems to be the importance of education, transparency and information sharing, which is also of utmost importance to the Assiniboine Racing Club. In addition to attracting new fans and creating interest in the sport, of importance to racing will be the rate at which club members will migrate to distinct ownership individual or group interests.

The 2017 Edition of the Assiniboia Racing Club

As indicated, the initial organizing meeting of the 2017 edition of the Assiniboia Racing Club is to be held on December 11, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the Terrace dining room at Assiniboia Downs. Although the final numbers will not be known for a number of weeks as further payments come in, at present there will be approximately 10 paid up members who are entirely new to racing, 17 or 18 returnees who were first-time owners from last year, and approximately 5 to 6 veteran owners. One person purchased two shares and another purchased four shares. One share so far has been purchased as a Christmas gift. There are approximately 10 female owners and the ages of all owners run from between the mid-twenties to retirement age. Approximately 4 members, new to racing ownership last year, have migrated into other ownership situations, which is a percentage roughly on par with statistics from other clubs. During the organizational meeting, the Club will discuss the selection of a trainer for the 2017 racing season. Also to be discussed will be the possible purchase of Club golf shirts, the possible organization of a Club ASD barn and facility tour, and the possibility of holding an early season social gathering. Members will also be presented with the necessary Manitoba Horse Racing Commission documents including the Partnership Registration, the Stable Name Registration and the Appointment of Authorized Agent forms. These have been prepared for the member’s signature. Also provided will be the necessary Owner’s License Application forms.

Conclusion

The attraction of new owners into the industry is one of a number of factors critical to the future of racing. By way of example, the BC yearling sale took place on September 13, 2016. The catalog was strong as breeders in BC continued to upgrade their horses thanks to the Broodmare Incentive Program. But at the end of the sale 65 percent of offerings had sold with the average dropping 17 percent and the median dropping 42 percent. This led to the following comment in the October /November edition of the Canadian Thoroughbred Magazine: “It seems, however, we are unable to do the most important thing of all, which is to attract new owners to our sport”. Thoroughbred racing in Manitoba experienced some very welcome and positive developments in 2016, which bode well for the future of the industry. The Assiniboia Racing Club, in its attempt to attract and retain new owners, is a small part of the effort being made by the industry to secure and enhance the future of this exciting, unique, and valuable sport. Editor’s Note: If you or anyone you know may be interested in becoming a member of the Assiniboia Racing Club, please contact Joanie Hamilton at the HBPA, [email protected].

15 Jean’s Dream ‐ Thoroughbred Horses with Different Colours/Markings Jean’s Dream

Jean McEwen has been a long‐time owner at Assiniboia Downs but prior to that was involved with paint show horses. Given her love of both paint horses and she visited Color Your World Ranch, in Glendale, Arizona ‐ their motto is Home of the Fanciest Thoroughbreds in the World! Their website states The Facts are in Black and White! The Thoroughbreds are in " COLOR !" Jean decided that the next thoroughbred she would race would have the frame overo pattern (or type as it is referred to by the APHA) ‐ patches of white appear on the sides of the neck, barrel, and rump with white rarely crossing the topline and often there are large white markings on the face. This pattern is most common in Paints but does occur in other breeds such as the Thoroughbred and the Miniature Horse. She purchased 2 thoroughbred stallions with the frame overo type ‐ Ellusive Spell and Poet or Pirate from their breeder Nancy McEachern DVM. The horses were shipped to trainer Emile Corbel at ASD where Ellusive Spell made 2 starts for Maiden Special Weight running 4th & 5th and then was retired due to an injury. Poet or Pirate did not start. Jean has a dream to breed the first Canadian bred with the frame overo pattern colour to win a race in Canada. Jean’s Colourful Foals Since purchasing frame overo pattern stallions Ellusive Spell and Poet or Pirate, she has purchased registered palomino thoroughbred stallion Sonoran Gold from Nancy McEachern DVM. When you go to Jean’s farm in the Rosser area the first thing you notice is the unusual colour/markings on her thoroughbred foals. Ellusive Spell is registered as a Dark Bay or Brown Horse by the Jockey Club. The APHA shows that his type is shown as frame overo. He has sired

a 2014 thoroughbred colt with the frame overo pattern. His registration papers have not been received so his actual name is not yet known but he was called Spot at the race track and is known affectionately as Oz at the farm. In 2016 he was learning his basics under the tutelage of Heather Wallerstedt – being a big colt he was sent home to mature. His dam is So Like a Tiger.

An Anglo Arab (thoroughbred Arab cross) who is currently being pointed towards the Canadian National Arabian & Half Arabian Championship that is being held in the summer of 2017 in Brandon, MB. Poet or Pirate is registered as a Bay Horse by the Jockey Club with his APHA papers showing the type of frame overo. His get includes 16 A chestnut filly out of Charute.

A bay filly out of Lordes at War. Sonoran Gold is registered as a Palomino on his Jockey Club registration while his APHA registration shows as Cremello. Per the APHA a cremello has a cream or off‐white body colour, mane and tail with pale, pinkish skin – the coat has enough yellow to allow white markings to be visible. He currently has 3 foals on the ground

A buckskin colt out of Rock ‘n Motion. The APHA states that a Buckskin has a yellowish or gold body colour with a black mane and tail and black on the lower legs. A Buckskin lacks primitive markings.

A smoky black colt out of Dearest Susie. The entire coat, including muzzle, flanks and legs are black; colour may fade when exposed to the sun’ could have rusty tinge during certain times of the year; early foals may be an overall mousy gray, then shed to black.

A palomino filly out of Baby Charute. The APHA states that a Palomino’s body colour varies from rich gold to pale yellow while the mane and tail are generally pale or off‐white but may be the same color as the body. Recognized Colours & Double Registry for Thoroughbred/Paint Horses The Jockey Club Registration website states that there are 7 coat colours possible for thoroughbred horses –

17 Bay, Black, Chestnut, Dark Bay/Brown, Gray/Roan, Palomino and White. We did talk to a Jockey Club representative and were advised that they are not planning on adding any additional colors. In 2001, The Jockey Club started DNA typing for parentage verification. The genetic testing laboratories under contract by The Jockey Club compare the genetic factors present in the sire and dam to those factors present in the foal. These comparisons indicate whether the sire and dam reported do indeed qualify as the sire and dam of the foal. Certain registered thoroughbreds can be double registered in the American Paint Horse Association (APHA). The APHA website states that Paint Horses have base coats the same colors of other breeds but super‐ imposed over these colors are a variety of white spotting patterns. The APHA recognizes additional colour choices in their registry ‐ Brown (thoroughbred choice is Dark Bay/Brown), Sorrel, Red Roan, Blue Roan, Bay Roan, Cremello, Perlino, Smokey Cream, Red Dun, Dun, Gruillo, Buckskin, Amber Champagne, Classic Champagne and Gold Champagne. In addition, one of 4 types must be selected ‐ Tobiano, Overo, Tovero and Solid. The sire and dam must be registered with the APHA and the foal’s Jockey Club registration papers must be received before the APHA registration process can begin. Once all of this is in place the horse is genetically colour tested at an approved animal genetics lab to show that they have paint genes – one such lab is located at the University of California Davis. Hopefully Jean’s dream will come true soon with Oz (aka Spot). Or maybe it will be one of the other colourful foals she has bred that will hit the winner’s circle first – only time will tell. One thing is sure Jean will be very happy when she goes to greet one of her colourful thoroughbreds in the winners’ circle. Just look for her silks!

This article was a collaborative effort between Connie Clauson, Darlene Wedge, Jean McEwen, Laura McIvor and Leona Stahl and contains a very high level of detail on colourful Thoroughbreds – for more detailed information the American Paint Horse Association’s website contains a section entitled American Paint Horse Association’s Guide to Coat Color Genetics. Further information on the genetic testing can be found on the internet under UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory.
