  • An Urgent Statement from Hospitals in the City of Toronto and the Regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York GTA Hospitals Support Further Lockdown Measures
An Urgent Statement from Hospitals in the City of Toronto and the Regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York GTA Hospitals Support Further Lockdown Measures December 20, 2020 - Today, on behalf of our patients, health care workers and staff, we are supporting the Ontario Hospital Association’s call for stronger lockdown measures from the Government of Ontario. Across the Greater Toronto Area, COVID-19 infections are continuing to rise, as are hospitalizations and intensive care cases. These trends show no sign of slowing – in fact, a surge in cases following the holiday season is expected to make the situation even worse. Our staff are caring for increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients in hospitals and assisting in other settings such as long-term care homes. They are also keeping up with the care needs of patients without COVID-19 and trying to make progress in the significant backlog of scheduled surgeries and procedures cancelled during the first wave. For many months now, these frontline health care workers have been devoting enormous energy and skill to caring for their patients, at the very epicenter of the pandemic. They are stressed and overstretched. This level of strain is simply not sustainable for much longer. We are seeing increasing numbers of staff becoming ill and not able to work – both with COVID-19 and other illnesses. While we are coping and planning for redeployment, we are seeing more illness and stress and hearing about the toll this is taking on people’s families. We recognize that lockdown measures are challenging for many members of our communities, but we cannot afford to put patients and health care workers at further risk.

Why St. Joe’s TESTIMONIAL chose OPSEU... When we, the staff at St. Joe’s became aware that the merger with St. Michael’s Hospital would result in being absorbed into LiUNA 3000 without a vote, we decided to bring in the union of our choice. We chose OPSEU, as it is a well-known union in the hospital sector. OPSEU has the experience, size, and strength required to make certain that we are well represented. Therefore, it was no surprise that St. Joe’s voted 100% in favour of OPSEU. Now, we all have a voice and a vote. We all have the opportunity to choose the union that will represent us best going forward. Vote OPSEU. The Facts of COVID in Ontario Claim Correction Hospital Capacity challenges exist in hospitals across Ontario, with over 40 hospital corporations reporting occupancy rates in excess of 90% on occupancy is January 7, 2021. better than pre- pandemic. Dr. Brown presented alarming trends mere days ago, which Mr. Baber would have been briefed on. Over the last four weeks, there has been a 72 per cent increase in hospitalizations and a 61 per cent increase in ICU patients. Further, more than half of the provincial ICUs are full or only have one or two beds left. Dr. Brown notes that if we stay on our current trajectory, there will be more than 1,000 COVID-19 patients in ICU by early February. That would be catastrophic. COVID patients in hospital: • Outbreaks have closed beds in key centres like Trillium Health Partners, William Osler Health System and Greater Niagara General. • Key hospitals experiencing significant increases in capacity pressures (as of January 3, 2021): • Trillium Health Partners – 96% total ICU occupancy • Windsor Regional Hospital – 90.2% total ICU occupancy • Humber River Hospital – 97.8% total ICU occupancy • Halton Healthcare Services – 93.8% total ICU occupancy • Markham Stouffville Hospital – 120% total ICU occupancy • Mackenzie Health – 94.7% Total ICU occupancy As you may know, Mr. Baber represents a Toronto riding. • 2016 WIHV Innovation Report
MAKING CARE MORE ACCESSIBLE, MORE EFFECTIVE AND MORE AFFORDABLE THINKOVATION INNOVATION REPORT WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOSPITAL INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH SYSTEM SOLUTIONS AND VIRTUAL CARE WHERE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS ARE AMPLIFIED THE QUESTIONS WIHV ASKS • Reports say there are over 165,000 health apps available in the App and Play Stores. They may look cool, but how can we tell which ones actually help patients improve their health? • When patients need urgent care, fewer than half are able to see their doctor on the same or next day after calling. How can we boost same-day access when it is needed? • When patients have difficulty accessing care, many seek attention in the emergency room where they can spend over six hours before being seen. How can we meet the needs of patients in their family doctor’s office, or at home instead? • Today, three out of five Canadians over the age of 20 live with chronic diseases or injuries – most commonly cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension and mental illness. How can we help more people to stay well closer to home? WHERE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS ARE AMPLIFIED WIHV is an emerging centre for innovation at WCH. The Institute is helping to achieve WCH’s mandate to test and implement new models of care and scale the most successful among them beyond the hospital’s four walls. For a new model or approach to be recommended, it must first demonstrate to WIHV that it will not 3 only improve how patients experience care, but that it has the capacity to enhance population health while THE QUESTIONS reducing costs across the entire healthcare system.
