Saving the Dust Bowl: “Big Hugh” Bennett’s Triumph over Tragedy Rebecca Smith Senior Historical Paper “It was dry everywhere . and there was entirely too much dust.” -Hugh Hammond Bennett, visit to the Dust Bowl, 19361 Merciless winds tore up the soil that once gave the Southern Great Plains life and hurled it in roaring black clouds across the nation. Hopelessly indebted farmers fed tumbleweed to their cattle, and, in the case of one Oklahoma town, to their children. By the 1930s, years of injudicious cultivation had devastated 100 million acres of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico.2 This was the Dust Bowl, and it exposed a problem that had silently plagued American agriculture for centuries–soil erosion. Farmers, scientists, and the government alike considered it trivial until Hugh Hammond Bennett spearheaded a national program of soil conservation. “The end in view,” he proclaimed, “is that people everywhere will understand . the obligation of respecting the earth and protecting it in order that they may enjoy its fullness.” 3 Because of his leadership, enthusiasm, and intuitive understanding of the American farmer, Bennett triumphed over the tragedy of the Dust Bowl and the ignorance that caused it. Through the Soil Conservation Service, Bennett reclaimed the Southern Plains, reformed agriculture’s philosophy, and instituted a national policy of soil conservation that continues today. The Dust Bowl tragedy developed from the carelessness of plenty. Friends of the Capitol 2009-June 2010 Report Our Mission Statement: Friends of the Capitol is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation that is devoted to maintaining and improving the beauty and grandeur of the Oklahoma State Capitol building and showcasing the magnificent gifts of art housed inside. This mission is accomplished through a partnership with private citizens wishing to leave their footprint in our state's rich history. Education and Development In 2009 and 2010 Friends of the Capitol (FOC) participated in several educational and developmental projects informing fellow Oklahomans of the beauty of the capitol and how they can participate in the continuing renovations of Oklahoma State Capitol building. In March of 2010, FOC representatives made a trip to Elk City and met with several organizations within the community and illustrated all the new renovations funded by Friends of the Capitol supporters. Additionally in 2009 FOC participated in the State Superintendent’s encyclo-media conference and in February 2010 FOC participated in the Oklahoma City Public Schools’ Professional Development Day. We had the opportunity to meet with teachers from several different communities in Oklahoma, and we were pleased to inform them about all the new restorations and how their school’s name can be engraved on a 15”x30”paver, and placed below the Capitol’s south steps in the Centennial Memorial Plaza to be admired by many generations of Oklahomans. Washington Rucker Drummer Clarence Dixon told Rucker “this pair of sticks will take you all over the world if you want to go,” and they did. Chapter 01 – 1:30 Introduction Announcer: Washington Irving Rucker was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 5th, 1937 and attended local schools through graduation from Booker T. Washington High School, developing a talent for the drums along the way. By his teens, Washington was working with bluesman Jimmy “Cry Cry” Hawkins and was soon off to UCLA to study and get into the Los Angeles music scene. A man of many talents, Washington got a degree in history and side careers in acting and cosmetology while playing drums with bands in a variety of genres. Rucker has worked with artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Gospel artists Rev. James Cleveland and Shirley Caesar, Jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Hampton Hawes, and Freddie Hubbard and singers Nancy Wilson and Linda Hopkins. He has also appeared regularly in film and television as a character actor, most notably in Martin Scorsese’s “New York, New York” and Clint Eastwood’s “Bird”. Drummer Clarence Dixon once told him “This pair of sticks will take you all over the world if you want to go” and those words became Washington Rucker’s reality. He is a 1998 inductee of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. The song used for this introduction is titled Lucky and is one of many songs written by Washington. You can hear Lucky in its entirety at the end of this interview. -

WHEREAS, Henry Louis Bellmon was born September 3, 1921, on a farm near Tonkawa in Kay County, Oklahoma. Henry Bellmon was educated in Noble County public schools and graduated from Billings High School in 1938. He attended Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1942 with a degree in agriculture; and WHEREAS, Henry L. Bellmon joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He served with a tank company for over three years, participating in four Pacific battles, including Iwo Jima. He was presented with the Legion of Merit and Silver Star for his military service. A complete list of his military honors and appointments would be too lengthy to include; and WHEREAS, Henry L. Bellmon, at the age of 25, was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1946. In 1950 he returned to his farm near Billings to raise wheat and cattle as well as to hunt and fish; and WHEREAS, Henry L. Bellmon served as Republican State Chairman in 1960 and in 1962 was elected Oklahoma's first Republican Governor. -

Gov. Fallin, distinguished elected officials, honored guests, and my fellow Oklahomans and friends: Two days ago, our nation suffered a terrible tragedy with the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Indeed, the tragedy directly touched Oklahoma, where friends and family members of two of the lost astronauts live. Our flags fly at half staff in their honor, our hearts are heavy for their loss, but our spirits are fortified by their bravery and selflessness. Please join me in a moment of silent tribute. A few weeks ago, on the South steps of the Capitol, I asked all Oklahomans to reflect on our strengths and to seek opportunities in the current budget crisis. Let’s be reminded of our strengths as we roll up our sleeves and get to work together. This is a great state, and we must be proud and thankful for so much. But, all too often, we have accentuated the negative. We must put aside our differences and renew our faith that we can do great things. I take comfort in my family: My wife, Kim, who is my partner in life and my three daughters, Leah, Laynie and Baylee, who are in school today. They give my life meaning. Without their love and support, I could not be here. Kim, would you please stand and be recognized? I also want to note that I take comfort in the fact that I address you from the same well where great leaders once stood - like David Boren, Henry Bellmon and George Nigh. -

Garner ABSTRACT Professional athletes are paid for their labor and it is often believed they have a weaker argument of exploitation. However, labor disputes in professional sports suggest athletes do not always receive fair compensation for their contributions to league and team success. Any professional athlete, regardless of their race, may claim to endure unjust wages relative to their fellow athlete peers, yet Black professional athletes’ history of exploitation inspires greater concerns. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to explore and trace the historical development of basketball in the United States (US) and the critical role Black males played in its growth and commercial development, and 2) to illuminate the perspectives and experiences of Black male professional basketball players concerning the role the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), collectively considered as the Players Association for this study, played in their welfare and addressing issues of exploitation. While drawing from the conceptual framework of anti-colonial thought, an exploratory case study was employed in which in-depth interviews were conducted with a list of Black male professional basketball players who are members of the Players Association. -
