After returning from St. Louis with two awards in hand, there were a lot of pictures and articles in local newspapers. This brought a great deal of attention to the STMA and to our facility. We then hosted the 2000 N.C. American Legion Championship, which drew over 26,000 in 6 days. Everyone who came knew this field was a winner and saw the STMA name in the stadium. All of this made me proud to be a mem- ber of our Association. At that point I thought it could not be any better. But the 2001 conference was yet to come. From the moment I walked into the hotel in Tampa, I knew once again this was a special group. There were "family members" in abundance. I immediately volun- teered to help in the STMA office. It was hard work, but it was also extremely gratifying to be around so many dedi- cated and hard working people. Starting with the tour on Wednesday, it was now my turn to make people feel spe- cial and part of .
