By Steve Sternberg For American television viewers, the start of the new primetime television season is still four months away. For insiders at media agencies, networks, and advertisers, however, the Upfront season is placing thoughts of September squarely into May. Of course, the very idea of a fall TV season in today’s video world seems old fashioned. The broadcast networks might still adhere to fall and mid-season schedules for debuting new shows, but their competitors do not. Ad-supported cable networks premiere many new series when the broadcast nets are airing repeats and some limited-run series (mostly non-sweeps months and the summer). Premium cable networks, such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz, air new shows throughout the year. Streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, release full seasons of new series whenever they happen to be ready. CBS All Access does as well, although it releases new episodes on a weekly schedule, rather than all at once. In a television landscape of 10-episode cable series, and streaming services where you can binge- watch entire seasons, viewers don’t necessarily think in terms of TV seasons anymore. Nevertheless, the broadcast networks still hold onto a schedule that starts in the fall. Lucas, Purdue University Calumet, USA Jonathan M. Furdek, Purdue University Calumet, USA ABSTRACT On October 10, 2007, the UAW membership ratified a landmark, 456-page labor agreement with General Motors. Following pattern bargaining, the UAW also reached agreement with Chrysler LLC and then Ford Motor Company. This paper will examine the major provisions of these groundbreaking labor agreements, including the creation of the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA), the establishment of a two tier wage structure for newly hired workers, the job security provisions, the new wage package for hourly workers, and the shift to defined contribution plans for new hires. The paper will also provide an economic analysis of these labor agreements to consider both if the “Big Three” automakers can remain competitive in the global market and what will be their impact on the UAW and its membership. Keywords: UAW, 2007 Negotiations, Labor Contracts BACKGROUND he 2007 labor negotiations among the Big Three automakers (General Motors, Chrysler LLC, and Ford Motor) and the United Autoworkers (UAW) proved to be historic, as well as controversial as they sought mutually to agree upon labor contracts that would “usher in a new era for the auto Tindustry.” Both parties realized the significance of attaining these groundbreaking labor agreements, in order for the American auto industry to survive and compete successfully in the global economy. For the UAW, with its declining membership of approximately 520,000, that once topped 1.5 million members, a commitment from the Big Three automakers for product investments to protect jobs and a new health care trust fund were major goals. -

Shape Shifting for Time Shifting: Weight Loss in the Transmediation of This Is Us Jennifer Lynn Jones, Indiana University Successfully competing in Peak TV requires savvy promotions. Generally, “Peak TV” refers to the saturation of scripted television in this alleged new “Golden Age of Television,” with broadcast networks, cable channels, and stand-alone streaming services competing for ever more elusive viewers. Following the Pearson family and its unconventional triplets, NBC’s hit This Is Us (2016 to current) has distinguished itself in Peak TV by updating the generic conventions of a family soap with a mobile narrative temporality, constantly moving from present to past and, as season two glimpses suggest, into the future, in ways that create experiential and affective convergences between characters. This has given the show an edge in an era when network television has struggled with changing televisual viewing practices marked by both time- and platform-shifting. These relate to another significant aspect, body size: a main storyline involves the corpulence and weight loss of sister Kate, which has likewise necessitated body shaping in the contract of actress Chrissy Metz. The vicissitudes of Metz’s body extend Kate’s story, thus creating textual convergences through the body as a platform for transmediation. This response will consider how Metz’s appearances in mainstream television talk shows contribute to this phenomenon. Metz claims that she “committed to Kate’s evolution” in her audition process knowing that it would involve body shaping.1 “Body shaping” refers to any activity meant to transform the body, whether through diet, exercise, prosthetics, surgery, or cosmetology. -

This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions. -
