In addition, defending champion Jiri Vesely and local wild card Michael Venus are in action. In the opening match, Germans Philipp Kohlschreiber and qualifier Benjamin Becker meet for the second time. Kohlschreiber, who won the title in 2008 and reached the final in ’13, won the previous meeting in Vienna in 2014. In the next match on, Fognini brings a 2-1 Fed Ex ATP Head 2 Head advantage against Portuguese No. 1 Joao Sousa. They split last year’s matches with Sousa winning in the QFs in Umag before Fognini prevailing in the 1R at ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai. That was also their only hard court meeting. In the third match on, British No. 2 Aljaz Bedene looks to level his record against American Sam Querrey, who won the previous meeting at the Queen’s Club in London in 2013. Querrey was a runner-up here in 2009 (l. to del Potro) and SF in ’13. Bedene is making his debut in Auckland. In the evening session, Bautista Agut and Vesely square off for the first time. Bautista Agut was a semi-finalist two years ago and Vesely is coming off his maiden ATP World Tour title. The young Czech Republic native qualified into the main draw and beat fellow left-hander Adrian Mannarino in the final. In the next match on, Venus and Paire meet for the first time. Venus reached the 2R last year and Paire, who is coming off a semi-final showing in Chennai last week, was a quarter-finalist here in 2012. The 26-year-old Frenchman earned ATP Comeback Player of the Year honors last year after jumping from No. 118 to No. 19. REIGNING CHAMPION: Jiri Vesely qualified into the main draw last year ranked No. 63. He won two qualifying matches and five in the main draw to capture his maiden ATP World Tour title. He defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in an all-left-handed final. Afterwards he jumped from No. 63 to No. 39 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. Later in the season Vesely reached the final in Bucharest (l. to Garcia-Lopez). He finished as the No. 2 player from the Czech Republic with a 24- 30 match record and No. 41 ranking.
