Biographical Memoirs V.67 PREFACE vii Preface On March 3, 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Act of Incorporation that the authoritative version for attribution. brought the National Academy of Sciences into being. In accordance with that ing-specific formatting, however, cannot be original charter, the Academy is a private, honorary organization of scientists, elected for outstanding contributions to knowledge, who can be called upon to advise the federal government. As an institution the Academy's goal is to work toward increasing scientific knowledge and to further the use of that knowledge for the general good. The Biographical Memoirs, begun in 1877, are a series of volumes containing the life histories and selected bibliographies of deceased members of the Academy. Colleagues familiar with the discipline and the subject's work prepare the essays. These volumes, then, contain a record of the life and work of our most distinguished leaders in the sciences, as witnessed and interpreted by their colleagues and peers. They form a biographical history of science in America—an important part of our nation's contribution to the intellectual heritage of the world. PETER H. • Olga Ladyzhenskaya and Olga Ole˘Inik: Two Great Women Mathematicians of the 20Th Century
OLGA LADYZHENSKAYA AND OLGA OLE˘INIK: TWO GREAT WOMEN MATHEMATICIANS OF THE 20TH CENTURY SUSAN FRIEDLANDER∗ AND BARBARA LEE KEYFITZ This short article celebrates the contributions of women to partial differ- ential equations and their applications. Although many women have made important contributions to this field, we have seen the recent deaths of two of the brightest stars–Olga Ladyzhenskaya and Olga Ole˘ınik–and in their memory, we focus on their work and their lives. The two Olgas had much in common and were also very different. Both were born in the 1920s in the Soviet Union, grew up during very difficult years, and survived the awful death and destruction of the World War II. Shortly after the war, they were students together at Moscow State Uni- versity where they were both advised by I. G. Petrovsky, whose influence on Moscow mathematics at the time was unsurpassed. Both were much in- fluenced by the famous seminar of I. M. Gelfand, and both young women received challenging problems in PDE from Gelfand. In 1947, both Olgas graduated from Moscow State University, and then their paths diverged. Olga Ole˘ınik remained in Moscow and continued to be supervised by Petro- vsky. Her whole career was based in Moscow; after receiving her Ph.D. in 1954, she became first a professor and ultimately the head of the Depart- ment of Differential Equations at Moscow State University. Olga Ladyzhen- skaya moved in 1947 to Leningrad, and her career developed at the Steklov Institute there. Like Ole˘ınik, her mathematical achievements were very in- fluential; as a result of her work, Ladyzhenskaya overcame discrimination to become the uncontested leader of the Leningrad school of PDE.

NATIONAL AND KAPODISTRIAN UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS Surface area and porosity determination of natural todorokite- rich manganese (Mn) oxides, Cape Vani Mn deposit, Milos Island, Greece: implications for potential industrial applications By: Alexandra Stavropoulou A Thesis submitted in partial fullfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) in the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment Supervisor: Prof. Stephanos P. Kilias January 2017 Master Thesis Stavropoulou V. Alexandra Examination Committee 1. Stephanos Kilias, Professor 2. Athanasios Godelitsas, Associate Professor 3. Ioannis Mitsis, Assistant Professor 2 Master Thesis Stavropoulou V. Alexandra ABSTRACT Natural todorokite-rich Mn oxide ore samples derived from the Cape Vani Mn oxide deposit, Milos Island, Greece, were studied by means of N2 BET specific surface area (SSA), and pore volume measurements. Cape Vani Mn oxide ores occur in a Pliocene- Pleistocene intravolcanic marine basin, they consist primarily of nanocrystalline and crystal defective todorokite, and δ-MnO2, hollandite-cryptomelane-coronadite- manjiroite and pyrolusite that cement volcaniclastic sandstone, and are suggested to be derived from biogenic Mn oxide precursors. Todorokite which possesses many potential technological and industrial applications, has been identified in Cape Vani employing primarily high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) ; moreover, the Milos todorokite has identical nanoparticle morphology to experimentally produced todorokite from birnessite (Atkins et al., 2014) under conditions analogous to marine diagenetic and hydrothermal settings. The determined SSA and porosity were compared to available relevant data from the published literature, i.e. natural and synthetic todorokite in order to evaluate its industrial and/or environmental application prospects. The measured N2 BET surface areas of the sandstone-hosted Cape Vani material range from 10.7 to 53.1 m2/g, and correspond largely to Mn oxides and primarily todorokite.

In this paper, we flesh out the historiographical tensions arising from these confrontations: longue-duree´ history and revolution; abstract mathematics and the use of mathematical techniques in various other domains. After reviewing the historiography of dynamical systems theory from Poincar´e to the 1960s, we highlight the pioneering work of a few individuals (Steve Smale, Edward Lorenz, David Ruelle). We then go on to discuss the nature of the chaos phenomenon, which, we argue, was a conceptual reconfiguration as

Memorial Tributes: Volume 8 BEN RICH 200 Copyright National Academy of Sciences. All rights reserved. Memorial Tributes: Volume 8 BEN RICH 201 Ben Rich 1925-1995 By Willis M. Hawkins Ben Rich died on January 5, 1995, after a full career as an engineer, a designer, and an effective and cherished executive. I first knew Ben when he joined the Lockheed Aircraft Company in Burbank back in 1950. He came to us from the University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Los Angeles, with a master's degree in mechanical engineering. At the time, I was in charge of the Advanced Design Organization under the Deputy Chief Engineer C. L. "Kelly" Johnson, and we were working on our first Mach 2+ Air Force fighter proposal, which became the F-104. Ben was assigned the task of analyzing the aerothermodynamic performance of the power plant with little or no existing state of the art for supersonic inlets. It is a testament to Ben's understanding of this specialty that the inlet configuration was classified by the Air Force and the details obscured in Air Force-released pictures of the airplane for a number of years. The Lockheed "Skunk Works," which had originated during the design and development of the original P-80 prototype "Lulu-Belle," was being reactivated at about the time that the F-104 was conceived. Its specific purpose was the secret development of the U-2, and Ben was ''borrowed" by Kelly Johnson to help on that program. His "temporary'' assignment became his career. Under Kelly, Ben pursued his specialty of aerothermodynamic analysis.

Carbone and R. De Arcangelis, 191{211, Gakkotosho, Tokyo, 2003". On Homogenization and Γ-convergence Luc TARTAR1 In memory of Ennio DE GIORGI When in the Fall of 1976 I had chosen \Homog´en´eisationdans les ´equationsaux d´eriv´eespartielles" (Homogenization in partial differential equations) for the title of my Peccot lectures, which I gave in the beginning of 1977 at Coll`egede France in Paris, I did not know of the term Γ-convergence, which I first heard almost a year after, in a talk that Ennio DE GIORGI gave in the seminar that Jacques-Louis LIONS was organizing at Coll`egede France on Friday afternoons. I had not found the definition of Γ-convergence really new, as it was quite similar to questions that were already discussed in control theory under the name of relaxation (which was a more general question than what most people mean by that term now), and it was the convergence in the sense of Umberto MOSCO [Mos] but without the restriction to convex functionals, and it was the natural nonlinear analog of a result concerning G-convergence that Ennio DE GIORGI had obtained with Sergio SPAGNOLO [DG&Spa]; however, Ennio DE GIORGI's talk contained a quite interesting example, for which he referred to Luciano MODICA (and Stefano MORTOLA) [Mod&Mor], where functionals involving surface integrals appeared as Γ-limits of functionals involving volume integrals, and I thought that it was the interesting part of the concept, so I had found it similar to previous questions but I had felt that the point of view was slightly different.
