Town finish third in U17 Tournament And in other academy news, we saw the youth team host a prestigious end of season mini-tournament, held over two days The format was three group games of 45 mins each, two on featuring Liverpool, Norwich and Brentford. It was organised as Friday night with the last group game and final held on the an opportunity to play competitively against some Cat 1 Saturday morning. The lads unfortunately missed out on the final opposition. but gave a very good account of themselves overall. On the first evening we drew 1:1 with Liverpool in a high quality game, we took the lead with a typical poacher’s goal from Charlie Brown but Liverpool came back strong and scored from a cross. That was followed by a nil-nil draw with Norwich, a predictably tight local derby. The next day saw us lose against a strong Brentford side but we came back well in the third place play off to beat our Norfolk rivals 2:1 with the boys showing a lot of character to see the game out, scorers: Downes from the penalty spot and Woolfenden with a header from a set piece routine. A big thank you to Gerard Nash for doing the organising and a massive thank you to the opposition teams for making the journey down for what turned out to be a very worthwhile event. His family had helped form the club and paved the way for domestic and European glory. He attended his first game at Portman Road as a young boy in 1950 alongside his uncle ‘Mr John’ and was appointed Philip with his wife Raewyn a director in 1995. Tributes have come from around the sporting world, with those who hold Town close to their hearts wanting to share their fond memories. Ipswich Town director and friend, Richard Moore said Philip’s spirit must be kept alive at the club and recalled fans’ joy at meeting him on away days particularly during Ipswich’s European heyday. “In the spirit of Ipswich Town Football Club we must keep him alive and treasure those special moments.” TalkSport presenter Georgie Bingham, an Ipswich Town fan, said Mr Hope-Cobbold “epitomised” what Ipswich was. “This man was the life and soul of every gathering he was at and a very old family friend” she said. Former Ipswich captain Matt Holland added: “Incredibly sad news.
