The Moles suffered the first defeat of their ECB Premier League campaign at home to Reigate Priory on Saturday 25th May. The Visitors arrived in style, their team minibus housing several professionals and one international. first, Reigate’s 243 all out owed Dominic Reed, full of smiles after his 1st X1 win 3 of the 4 first league games of much to Warwickshire CCC professional Michael Burgess’ the season and remain in all cup excellent 94. Fellow professional, Lancashire CCC’s competitions! Australian, Jake Lehmann, totalled 44, with Westphal and Kings impressing with a quartet of apiece. This total proved too be out of reach for the Moles’ batsmen, as they subsided to a meagre 98ao.

However, the Moles bounced back in impressive fashion this weekend, with a 7 demolition of local rivals Sunbury CC. Westphal was again on form, ripping out the top order with 4-29. Sunbury’s 123ao, was always likely to be insufficient on an excellent wicket, offering assistance to both spin and seam, whilst also rewarding good batting. Tom Philippe (36) and Dom Reed (40) afforded the Moles an early finish and the luxury of enjoying the late afternoon sunshine, to cap a wonderful start to the league season, as they now look ahead to 9 weeks The Moles 1st XI returned to Graburn Way after their early victory at Sunbury to of timed cricket. support the 2nd XI Next weekend (8/9 June) sees the visit of Sutton in the ECB Surrey Championship, and a Third Round National Knockout visit to high-flying U16 Max Tomlinson took a break from his Weybridge. With no pitch and the very real prospect of no cricket, things were not looking good for the 3rd XI league game against Normandy early on match day morning. Fortunately after a frantic hour or two, some hard bargaining and promises of fine dining tokens, the manicured facility at KGS was secured and all stresses soon eased.

Choosing to bat first, the mighty Moles amassed 328, Ahmad Malik continued his fine form with another 55 and Tom Beaumont 59. Useful contributions from Max Tomlinson 48, Joe Lynch 36 and Toby Porter 27.

Our grand total was never to be challenged once Zain Rizvi removed Normandy's opener second ball, followed by another soon after. Zain bowled through finishing with fantastic figures of 10 overs, 3 maidens, 21 runs and five wickets. Elliot Hanson grabbed 3 quick wickets at the end leaving Normandy 130 all out and comprehensively beaten by a very professional young unbeaten Molesey team. Joint top of the League.

All efforts must be made to make KGS our second ground...it would be perfect.

3rd XI’s Record breaking 467-6 vs Old Whitgiftians by Toby Porter The Molesey 3rd XI were away to bottom of the league Old Whitgiftians this Saturday. Unfortunately the toss had to be conceded by the home team due to an over-running colts match on the pitch, which created a 30-minute delay in the start of the game. Molesey’s skipper Dan Wakely decided to bat first.

With a good pitch, hot sunny weather and small boundaries all round (which was highlighted by the 35 yard at fine leg) a big score was on the cards.

Mark Collins and Tiam Afshar opened the batting for the unbeaten 3rd XI and put on a mammoth 169-run opening stand, with Tiam ending up with 61 and Mark a great 119 including 21 fours and 2 sixes! Their good work was continued by Ahmad Malik, Robbie Heald and Ed Craig, although the standout knock in the middle order came from Tom Beaumont who hit 88, including 5 sixes! With some big hitting lower down the order from Zain Rizvi and Chris Woods the Moles were able to reach a huge total of 467-6 from their 50 overs!!

From the moment Zain removed the first Old Whitgiftian opener, the home team never looked likely to win! But when the sudden realisation hit that, with a little bit of traffic and a slow over rate from the home team, we were in danger of missing the start of the Champions League final, we picked up our game! And with that Elliot Hanson suddenly started to take wickets, and even with a dropped catch off his bowling he managed to take 6 wickets for only 29 runs off his 10 overs. With Ed Craig bowling a good spell at the other end, ending with 2-17 off 8, and the disappearance of the Old Whits number 11, the 3rd XI managed to bowl Old Whitgiftians out for 94! And get back in time for the football!

That makes it 4 wins from 4 in the league, making us joint on points at the top of the table with Battersea Ironsides! SENIOR NEWS 4th XI beat Sunbury by 77 runs

An afternoon of good competitive cricket resulted in the right result for EMCC as the 4th XI proved too strong for Sunbury. Once again the policy of providing experience of Senior Cricket to our Juniors and now former Juniors was the main contributor, with standout performances from many of the youth in the team.

Batting first at KGS Sports Ground on a wicket that offered something to both batsman and bowlers, Jez Downer (53) and Patrick Lynch (56) laid a good foundation at 100-2 after 20 overs. The Sunbury Captain brought on a young spinner who took a number of quick wickets and resulted in the Moles collapsing to just 153 all out – potentially 20-30 runs light.

But the Youth proved that we are capable of bowling out most sides in this Division.

Openers Jo Lynch and Keiran Downer took 3 early wickets between them and were ably supported by first change bowlers Max Hanson and Player of the Month Jack Crowther. Jack blitzed the middle order taking 3 wickets in his 4 overs including flattening the off stump of the Sunbury No.3 who was the one Batsman who had offered some stoic resistance to our attack. Max got 2 in his 4 overs proving too quick for one of the Sunbury middle order with the bails disappearing in all directions.

With an outstanding run out by Luka Woods it was left to Olly Mills to finish off the innings dumbfounding the last Sunbury Batsman with his offspin, allowing the always sharp Kevin Ingram to whip off the bails. A joy to play in this team when we play such positive cricket and seeing the contributions that our now relatively experienced younger players can, and frequently do, make. Bring on Weybridge Vandals this weekend!

5th XI Vs Chipstead - A Great Day was had by all After another successful concession, the mighty 5s took a trip into southern Surrey and a friendly against Chipstead. Winning the toss and choosing to bat on a cracker of a day, the 5s started well, with Jon Akhurst on the front foot early, the local garden fences taking a beating.

What do you get if you have a broom with 17 new heads and 14 new handles? Triggered!

Akhurst, sent on his way LBW, where the W stands for wide. A collapse ensued, adult after after returning to the shed to dream of teas.

At 110 for 7 when Akhurst Junior and Birkett Junior set about demonstrating how batting is to be done. Consulate drives, smart running and a 100 partnership later, and the moles had a rather handsome 235 when skip declared it was time for something to eat. A first senior 50 for Harry Birkett was celebrated with 2 homemade cakes....Sumptuous...... Now for the hard yards.

Mahon and Akhurst junior set about the Chipstead attack in double quick time, taking 3 poles apiece, including a caught senior bowler junior for the Akhurst clan. Further wickets from Toby Crowther and Jake Pearce, both firsts in senior cricket, and the game was up.

Chipstead all out for 79. A great day was had by all.

5th XI vs Old Wimbledonians - Good things come to those who wait? The first league game of the year, inexplicably taking place in June, saw the mighty 5s take on Old Wimbledonians at fortress Long Ditton Rec. An interesting wicket, described as ‘not the best’ by some, and as a ‘smorgasbord’ by any nearby cows, meant it was a bat first day. The toss favoured the visitors, and a young set of mole guns went to task.

Singh, Simmonds-Gooding, Alfie and Louis, and Virk set about stump hunting, and took regular wickets. An ironic handful of misfields helping keep the game alive as Old Wimbledonians set the Moles 115 to win, a sprightly Tomlinson taking the final wickets to finish an all round strong bowling performance.

In reply, the moles started quickly. The first over, dispatched by Stevens for 12, resulted in the early retirement of the opening bowler. Ruthless from the OW skip. But the tactic paid off, as, on the 7th ball of the preceding over, Stevens was out bowled.

Forgetting that good things come to those who wait, particularly in their crease when the ball is in the hands of a fielder, the Moles began to self destruct. The skipper was run out without even taking guard, and a stream of steady wickets got OW interested in an unlikely victory.

Cameo batting dragged the total towards 90, before Tomlinson was again run out in calamitous circumstances. Now the game was in the balance. Singh came to the crease, the last man, and decided that the time for biting nails was now. 4. 6. 1. - 114 on the board. 2 needed off 9 overs. Square leg umpire called a no ball. Drama! Scores level. Surely the final run could be found in the 8 remaining overs. Was this the moment of the first 5th xi league win?

Alas, no. A full, straight, howitzer slammed into Singh's front pad, and though the collective will of all the molesey team begged Stevens to see it differently, up went the finger, and a tie was the result. Good things come to those who wait. First league wins are top of that list. 6th XI beat Sheen by 158 runs

A very youthful Moles ‘6th XI’, with a spattering of experience, convincingly brushed aside Sheen Park 3rd XI on Saturday, winning a 40 over game by 158 runs. Batting first, the Moles opening pair of Matthew Moffatt and Jon Akhurst put on 90 before Akhurst retired hurt with a broken toe for 50. Moffatt went on to complete an excellent first adult half century, before retiring on 59. With Carl Jenkins also striking a quick 50*, Moles ended on 232-4. In reply, Finn MacCarthy and Joseph Akhurst set about dismantling the Sheen top order, with Finn finishing with the impressive figures of 4-6. Wickets for Dodhia, Huxtable and Sam Jenkins followed and Sheen were bundled out for 74. Special mention to the Jenkins’ family, with 3 of them on the pitch at the same time, with younger brother Luke donning his whites for the opposition claiming two wickets, including that of his brother, Sam! Well done the young Moles…the future is bright! History in the Making - EMCC’s first ever 7th XI

On Saturday history was made when East Molesey fielded their first ever 7th XI. “The Michael Bevans” took on Hampton Hill 4th XI at Imber Court. The 7’s lost the toss and were put into bat with Toby Crowther and Chris Fawcett getting off to a solid start before both falling. At 30-3 the 7’s were looking precarious before an excellent partnership between Dave Mystry and Lucas Green moved the score toward 3 figures. After Dave fell LBW for 24 it was left to Lucas Green to top score with 31 to try and nudge the 7’s towards a defendable total and he did so in fine style. After Lucas was out caught at mid-on trying to push the score on The 7’s were all out for 107 leaving them with plenty to do with the ball.

“The Hill” came out fast with some aggressive shots being played early on and on another day the aerial shots would have been snaffled up. The Hill were briefly pulled back due to a great opening spell by Alfred Dean (6-1-17-2) but The Hill managed to push towards their total losing a couple more wickets in the process. The bowling was shared out with a wicket a piece from Hugo Lynch and Jake Pearce before Hampton eventually hit the winning runs.

A solid effort from the 7’s overall with plenty to be positive about and no doubt a great learning curve going forward with many of the younger players making their first senior appearances.

EMCC Flames v EMCC U10

U10 action on bank holiday morning

Following the bank holiday warm-up tournament by the mens’ first team, the crowd was ready for the big match of the day: EMCC U11 Girls Flames vs EMCC U10 Boys development. And the teams didn’t disappoint: Girls bowled first and both Martha Green and Kiera Probert got three wickets each and Ellen Clarke achieved only 3 runs off her 3 overs and 1 wicket, keeping the boys to 260. In the second innings, the girls closely tracked the boys’ score over by over, and required 1 run off the final ball to win. The game finished as a tie. Well done to Lottie Scanlan on scoring important runs in her first hard ball game. EMCC Hurricanes

The hurricanes won again, beating Thames Ditton by 7 runs in another very exciting match!!

U15 Girls run continues! Success continues with the girls U15 side triumphant against Ashtead. SJIL U15 CHARGERS WINNING STREAK

U15 Chargers had 3 games in the last two weeks and three wins to report.

First up the team beat an under par Esher U15A team in the Surrey Invitational League. EMCC made 193-6 off 30 overs with Luka Woods 29, Patrick Lynch 31 and pick of the batsmen, Harry Porter not out on 53! In reply Esher were skittled out for 77! Freddie Sedden did most of the damage tearing through the top order with a fantastic 4 for 17.

Next up was Wimbledon CC on Sunday in the SJIL. Wimbledon turned up with a strong team and are one of the better sides in this league. We lost the toss and Wimbledon decided to bat. There is one bowler who shone very, very brightly and that is Jack Crowther who took a hat-trick and ended up with figures of 5 for 8 off six. A subliminal performance. That combined with recent encouraging news concerning our ClubMark accreditation must have made for a jolly Crowther household. 3 wickets in one over for Olly Mills and Wimbledon were eventually contained to 111 all out off 26.2 overs. A fine effort from the Chargers but not in the bag yet. Through patient batting from Luka Woods and a positive knock from Patrick Lynch, we chased it down in 24 overs. A good win against a strong team.

We’ve now played 4 and won 4 in the SJIL and are top of the league. A great start but we will be tested in games to Hat-trick hero Jack Crowther was walking on sunshine come over the coming weeks so fingers crossed this group can keep working hard and enjoy further success.

Meanwile in the Cup we met Hampton Wick in the last 16 of the ECB Surrey Cup. Hampton Wick turned up with a weak team and we managed to skittle them for 42 off 18.5 overs. Albeit mediocre opposition the bowling and fielding was strong with Chand Dodhia being the pick of the bowlers taking 3-18 off 4, ably supported by Alfred Simonds-Gooding, taking 1-7 off 4. We chased it down in 7 overs with Dom Millard and Luka Woods making sure we won by 10 wickets. Good to see them valuing their wickets regardless of the straight forward chase. We now face Horsely & Send in the last 8 of the County Cup, the game being played away this Friday. Special Match Report By U9’s Ben Snowball, EMCC U9 Jets Fly to Victory vs Thames Ditton

On Sunday 26th May Thames Ditton U9’S faced an East Molesey U9 Jet’s team. The Jets won a low scoring game by 27 runs on the main square at East Molesey. U9 Jets won the toss and their captain Billy chose to bat first. In the first 15 overs Thames Ditton bowled and fielded pretty well as a team so it was hard to get many runs. However, when the last pair (Max Beesley and George Eddy) came out for the Jet’s they together got a great partnership of 34. The Jets total at the interval was 271. In the field the jets got off to a flying start which never ended. Their catching was excellent as well as their bowling. Matthew Newbold caught a total of 2 as well as our part time Wicki (Kit Hardie). One of Matthew’s snaffles was in the sun and grabbed Australian style. The bowling attack was very accurate, especially Ben Snowball and Billy Craigen who only leaked 15 runs off their combined 6 overs and took 4 wickets. The team took a total of 11 wickets in restricting TDCC to 244. Therefore, East Molesey are unbeaten in the league so far… A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH SILVER BILLY!

Last year, we uncovered the story of William ‘Silver Billy’ Beldham, who scored 10 runs off a ball at Molesey Hurst in 1787 - well here is a picture in which you can see his ‘mop of straw coloured hair’, which had earned him his nick-name. Also, in the much recommended book Thameside Molesey, there is this description by John Nyron, Biographer:

“No one within my recolection could stop a ball bettr, or make moer brilliant hits all over the ground. Wherever the ball was bowled there she was hit away, and in the most severe, venemous style. Besides this, he was so remarkably safe a player: he was safer than the bank, for no mortal eer thought of doubting Bedham’s stability. He would get in at the blls, and hit them away in a gallant style, He died at the ripe old age of 97 and had 2 but when he would cut them at the oint of wives and thirty nine children! the bat he as in his glory: and upn my life, their speed was as the speed of thought.”

This Weekend’s Fixtures With rain forecast we hope to get in some if not all of the 20 matches featuring EMCC teams taking place this weekend. The 1st XI will look to continue their run of form when they host Sutton in the Premier Division on Saturday afternoon at Graburn Way and then travel to Weybridge to compete in the ECB National Cup on Sunday. In terms of junior home fixtures the U12s take on Thames Ditton on Friday evening and the U9 Jets play Maori Oxshott on Sunday afternoon followed by the U8 Kingfishers hosting Thames Ditton. Elsewhere our U15 Chargers take on Horsley and Send in the quarter finals of the ECB County Cup and the U10s meet local rivals Esher in the Mid-Surrey Cup. What a brilliant weekend of cricket!
