EMCC 2019 ISSUE 4 V2 2009 SUMMER EDITION NEWSLETTER 2019 NO 4 - JUNE 5 History in the making at EMCC as 7 Senior Moles sides take to the field! And they did us proud with a record score for the 3rd XI, wins for the 1st XI, 2nd XI, 3rd XI, 4th XI and 6th XI as well as a tie for the 5th XI. The 7th XI did a fantastic job with a very very young squad! This historic day was followed by our first Club Awards Night of the season at half time in the Champions League final! Congratulations to everybody who has contributed to such a great start to the season! Photos of the week Mick celebrating Liverpool’s Cup success - and the packed bar reacting to the penalty goal! Seniors News: 1st XI and Knightriders The Moles suffered the first defeat of their ECB Premier League campaign at home to Reigate Priory on Saturday 25th May. The Visitors arrived in style, their team minibus housing several professionals and one international. Batting first, Reigate’s 243 all out owed Dominic Reed, full of smiles after his 1st X1 win 3 of the 4 first league games of much to Warwickshire CCC professional Michael Burgess’ the season and remain in all cup excellent 94. Fellow professional, Lancashire CCC’s competitions! Australian, Jake Lehmann, totalled 44, with Westphal and Kings impressing with a quartet of wickets apiece. This total proved too be out of reach for the Moles’ batsmen, as they subsided to a meagre 98ao. However, the Moles bounced back in impressive fashion this weekend, with a 7 wicket demolition of local rivals Sunbury CC. Westphal was again on form, ripping out the top order with 4-29. Sunbury’s 123ao, was always likely to be insufficient on an excellent cricket wicket, offering assistance to both spin and seam, whilst also rewarding good batting. Tom Philippe (36) and Dom Reed (40) afforded the Moles an early finish and the luxury of enjoying the late afternoon sunshine, to cap a wonderful start to the league season, as they now look ahead to 9 weeks The Moles 1st XI returned to Graburn Way after their early victory at Sunbury to of timed cricket. support the 2nd XI Next weekend (8/9 June) sees the visit of Sutton in the ECB Surrey Championship, and a Third Round National Knockout visit to high-flying U16 Max Tomlinson took a break from his Weybridge. GCSE revision to make his 1st XI competitive debut and starred in the 1st game with 37 not out in the 20 20 vs Chertsey Type to enter3rd text XI Rise to the Top of the Table With no pitch and the very real prospect of no cricket, things were not looking good for the 3rd XI league game against Normandy early on match day morning. Fortunately after a frantic hour or two, some hard bargaining and promises of fine dining tokens, the manicured facility at KGS was secured and all stresses soon eased. Choosing to bat first, the mighty Moles amassed 328, Ahmad Malik continued his fine form with another 55 and Tom Beaumont 59. Useful contributions from Max Tomlinson 48, Joe Lynch 36 and Toby Porter 27. Our grand total was never to be challenged once Zain Rizvi removed Normandy's opener second ball, followed by another soon after. Zain bowled through finishing with fantastic figures of 10 overs, 3 maidens, 21 runs and five wickets. Elliot Hanson grabbed 3 quick wickets at the end leaving Normandy 130 all out and comprehensively beaten by a very professional young unbeaten Molesey team. Joint top of the League. All efforts must be made to make KGS our second ground...it would be perfect. 3rd XI’s Record breaking 467-6 vs Old Whitgiftians by Toby Porter The Molesey 3rd XI were away to bottom of the league Old Whitgiftians this Saturday. Unfortunately the toss had to be conceded by the home team due to an over-running colts match on the pitch, which created a 30-minute delay in the start of the game. Molesey’s skipper Dan Wakely decided to bat first. With a good pitch, hot sunny weather and small boundaries all round (which was highlighted by the 35 yard boundary at fine leg) a big score was on the cards. Mark Collins and Tiam Afshar opened the batting for the unbeaten 3rd XI and put on a mammoth 169-run opening stand, with Tiam ending up with 61 and Mark a great 119 including 21 fours and 2 sixes! Their good work was continued by Ahmad Malik, Robbie Heald and Ed Craig, although the standout knock in the middle order came from Tom Beaumont who hit 88, including 5 sixes! With some big hitting lower down the order from Zain Rizvi and Chris Woods the Moles were able to reach a huge total of 467-6 from their 50 overs!! From the moment Zain removed the first Old Whitgiftian opener, the home team never looked likely to win! But when the sudden realisation hit that, with a little bit of traffic and a slow over rate from the home team, we were in danger of missing the start of the Champions League final, we picked up our game! And with that Elliot Hanson suddenly started to take wickets, and even with a dropped catch off his bowling he managed to take 6 wickets for only 29 runs off his 10 overs. With Ed Craig bowling a good spell at the other end, ending with 2-17 off 8, and the disappearance of the Old Whits number 11, the 3rd XI managed to bowl Old Whitgiftians out for 94! And get back in time for the football! That makes it 4 wins from 4 in the league, making us joint on points at the top of the table with Battersea Ironsides! SENIOR NEWS 4th XI beat Sunbury by 77 runs An afternoon of good competitive cricket resulted in the right result for EMCC as the 4th XI proved too strong for Sunbury. Once again the policy of providing experience of Senior Cricket to our Juniors and now former Juniors was the main contributor, with standout performances from many of the youth in the team. Batting first at KGS Sports Ground on a wicket that offered something to both batsman and bowlers, Jez Downer (53) and Patrick Lynch (56) laid a good foundation at 100-2 after 20 overs. The Sunbury Captain brought on a young spinner who took a number of quick wickets and resulted in the Moles collapsing to just 153 all out – potentially 20-30 runs light. But the Youth proved that we are capable of bowling out most sides in this Division. Openers Jo Lynch and Keiran Downer took 3 early wickets between them and were ably supported by first change bowlers Max Hanson and Player of the Month Jack Crowther. Jack blitzed the middle order taking 3 wickets in his 4 overs including flattening the off stump of the Sunbury No.3 who was the one Batsman who had offered some stoic resistance to our attack. Max got 2 in his 4 overs proving too quick for one of the Sunbury middle order with the bails disappearing in all directions. With an outstanding run out by Luka Woods it was left to Olly Mills to finish off the innings dumbfounding the last Sunbury Batsman with his offspin, allowing the always sharp Kevin Ingram to whip off the bails. A joy to play in this team when we play such positive cricket and seeing the contributions that our now relatively experienced younger players can, and frequently do, make. Bring on Weybridge Vandals this weekend! Spot the Old Mole! Who spotted Adam Zampa, our overseas player 2 years ago, taking 3 for 60 in Australia’s win vs Afganistan at the weekend! Mugan the Mole reports on 5th XI 5th XI Vs Chipstead - A Great Day was had by all After another successful concession, the mighty 5s took a trip into southern Surrey and a friendly against Chipstead. Winning the toss and choosing to bat on a cracker of a day, the 5s started well, with Jon Akhurst on the front foot early, the local garden fences taking a beating. What do you get if you have a broom with 17 new heads and 14 new handles? Triggered! Akhurst, sent on his way LBW, where the W stands for wide. A collapse ensued, adult after after returning to the shed to dream of teas. At 110 for 7 when Akhurst Junior and Birkett Junior set about demonstrating how batting is to be done. Consulate drives, smart running and a 100 partnership later, and the moles had a rather handsome 235 when skip declared it was time for something to eat. A first senior 50 for Harry Birkett was celebrated with 2 homemade cakes....Sumptuous......Now for the hard yards. Mahon and Akhurst junior set about the Chipstead attack in double quick time, taking 3 poles apiece, including a caught senior bowler junior for the Akhurst clan. Further wickets from Toby Crowther and Jake Pearce, both firsts in senior cricket, and the game was up. Chipstead all out for 79. A great day was had by all. 5th XI vs Old Wimbledonians - Good things come to those who wait? The first league game of the year, inexplicably taking place in June, saw the mighty 5s take on Old Wimbledonians at fortress Long Ditton Rec. An interesting wicket, described as ‘not the best’ by some, and as a ‘smorgasbord’ by any nearby cows, meant it was a bat first day.
