In 2009, Willumsen penciled an issue of Mike Allred’s Madman, and in 2010 he drew three covers for Dust to Dust, Boom’s prequel to their comics adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Perhaps Willumsen’s most notable contribution to genre comics, however, was his art for “Where the Devil Don’t Stay”, written by Jason Latour for Untold Tales of Punisher Max #2 (2012). Latour’s story, about a family of redneck criminals who capture the Punisher and then fall apart while arguing over what to do with him (kill him or deliver him to a crime syndicate?) is Eisnerian in its focus on disposable supporting characters instead of the marquee lead. The Punisher doesn’t speak a word in this comic, and his face is cloaked in shadow. He’s only a MacGuffin, a narrative pretext that creates homicidal dissention among the rednecks.

    When the Abyss Looks Back: Treatments of Human Trafficking in Superhero Comic Books BOND BENTON AND DANIELA PETERKA-BENTON Superheroes and Social Advocacy Superhero comic book characters have historically demonstrated a developed social awareness on national and international problems. Given that the audience for superhero characters is often composed of young people, this engagement has served as a vehicle for raising understanding of issues and as a tool for encouraging activism on the part of readers (McAllister, “Comic Books and AIDS”; Thibeault). As Palmer-Mehta and Hay succinctly state: (They) have addressed a number of pressing social and political issues in narratives through the years, including alcohol and drug abuse, racism, environmental devastation, gun control, and poverty. In the process, they have provided a rich tapestry of American cultural attitudes and philosophies that reflect varying approaches to issues that continue to haunt, confound, and rile the American public (390). The relationship of the superhero to topics of ongoing public concern appears to have been present even in the earliest days of the form. In Action Comics #1, Superman attacks a man abusing his partner stating “…tough is putting mildly the treatment you’re going to get! You’re not fighting a woman now!” (Siegel and Shuster 5). On the cover of Captain America Comics #1, the Captain is shown punching Adolf Hitler over a year before the Pearl Harbor attack at a time when non-intervention was a commonly held public sentiment (Jewett and Lawrence). THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART DECEMBER 2009 2 ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on the life and work of the marginalized British Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic homosexual Jewish painter Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) after 1873.This year was fundamental in the artist‘s professional and personal life, because it is the year that he was arrested for attempted sodomy charges in London. The popular view that has been disseminated by the early historiography of Solomon, since before and after his death in 1905, has been to claim that, after this date, the artist led a life that was worthless, both personally and artistically. It has also asserted that this situation was self-inflicted, and that, despite the consistent efforts of his family and friends to return him to the conventions of Victorian middle-class life, he resisted, and that, this resistant was evidence of his ‗deviancy‘. Indeed, for over sixty years, the overall effect of this early historiography has been to defame the character of Solomon and reduce his importance within the Aesthetic movement and the second wave of Pre-Raphaelitism. It has also had the effect of relegating the work that he produced after 1873 to either virtual obscurity or critical censure. In fact, it is only recently that a revival of interest in the artist has gained momentum, although the latter part of his life from 1873 has still remained under- researched and unrecorded.

Some problems 1 Image and narration (from Wickhoff to the Fantastic Four) Introduction My research project at the Italian Academy deals with cultural tradition as a heritage transmitted through images. In other words, with collective memory handed down through figures. In my first paper, moving from the German art historian Aby Warburg, I tried to interrogate the sense of a chain of images related to bodily postures expressing emotions (pathos-formulae between the two polar extremes of ecstatic mania and depressive melancholy): the analysis of the historical and formal link between Manet’s Dejeuner sur l’herbe, Raimondi’s (and Raphael’s) Judgment of Paris and an Hellenistic sarcophagus in Villa Medici, allowed me to reflect upon the meaning of the concepts of “model” and “origin”. As some of you perhaps remember, discussing Warburg’s theory of images and its fruitful contradictions, I tried to oppose a historical interpretation of such concepts (which understands the model as a Vor-Bild, a pre-existing, original image and the origin as the first point in the chronological line) to a morphological- typological interpretation (which conceives the model as a never given, originary theme of multiple, possibly infinite variations, and the origin as a non-chronological condition of possibility of historical figurative phaenomena).

When first given the gig to pencil Heroes For Hire, I was told that Marvel was looking for the covers to be painted. I haven't painted in about 15 years so I was out. Now, I've never done a book's interior and not the cover so I wasn't going to just sit back and have my cover taken away. Undaunted I put on my tiny thinking cap and had the brilliant idea of bringing in Mark Sparacio to paint over my pencils. Of course it was all for selfish reasons, but as you can see he's a true professional and one of the best-kept secrets in the business. To make a long story short, Mark had a meeting with HFH editor Mark Paniccia and boom! He was in, and I was happy! Many of you have seen Mark's artwork but probably didn't realize it. For over 20 years Mark's painted illustrations have graced the covers to hundreds of DVDs and countless magazine ads. He's a long-time comics fan who was very close to the late Will Eisner and one of the nicest chaps you'll ever meet. An incredible draftsman in his own right, Mark has been painting over my pencils for Shi covers since 2003 and I'm damn glad to have him on board for HFH.
