For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Caring for Place: Negotiating World Heritage on Lord Howe Island Abstract Lord Howe Island, located 700 kilometres north east of Sydney, New South Wales, is part of the World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island Group. In 1982 the Lord Howe Island Group was listed under the World Heritage Convention for its outstanding ‘natural’ heritage values. Since the listing, the World Heritage Convention has revisited the concept of ‘nature’ as the sole criterion for the designation of World Heritage, by embracing the concept of ‘cultural landscape’. However, this has no retrospective effect and therefore has not affected the listing of the Lord Howe Island Group. Consequently, despite a cultural heritage of over 180 years of European settlement, Lord Howe Island’s ‘cultural landscape’ and ‘intangible heritage’ are not valued in the process of managing it as a World Heritage Site. This thesis explores the consequences of environmental management processes arising from World Heritage listing which presently operate to marginalise, if not silence, Islander knowledge and how Islanders and other residents care for the Island. To do so, the project invited all Island residents, including those employed in ‘environmental management’ positions, to talk about what and how they care for the Island. The project required the development of a methodology that employed mixed-methods, and, crucially, was mindful of the concept of islandness, that is the cultural protocols of island places. Applying a form of narrative analysis, the results explore the differences and similarities between how ‘Islanders’ and other residents, on the one hand, and ‘environmental managers’ on the other, talk about nature, the Island, boundaries, plants, animals and World Heritage. Case studies illustrate how ‘environmental managers’ and other Island residents, particularly ‘Islanders’, draw on different knowledge- making practices to care for the Island and how this often results in disagreement over what should be protected, and what belongs and does not belong on the Island. This thesis suggests contemporary concepts of World Heritage, including ‘cultural landscape’ and ‘intangible heritage’, offer a mechanism whereby the process of environmental management of Lord Howe Island can engage with different knowledges of caring for the Island. Aberline Road A northerly continuation of McKiernan Road, running from the Moore Warrnambool 1917m Joseph Aberline (1809-1874) arrived in Warrnambool in 1849 after spending some years in New Zealand. His property, Street/Dales Road intersection north to Wangoom Road. "The Grove", built on Wangoom Road in the 1860s was the site of a brick-making enterprise established by his son, John (1854-1940) in 1891. It was from the Wangoom Road property that large boulders were taken for use as some of the filling A very old road that appears on an 1856 map of Warrnambool. for the Warrnambool breakwater. Some older maps call it Aberlines Road.

RICHDALE The Sooty Shearwater (Pufinus g&us) is the most common sea bird in New Zealand waters, where there must be several million individuals. From the last few days in September to the middle of November an observer on any of the headlands of the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand, may see this speciesflying south in an endless stream. The flight, however, is not continuous, for many pauses are made for feeding. It is on such occasionsthat huge flocks are noticed resting on the waters of various bays along the coast. This shearwater is locally known as the mutton-bird and the young are taken an- nually for food by those Maoris who have acquired ancestral rights. Europeans who are married to such natives also have a legal right to participate in these activities. Beginning on the first of April of each year, the season extends to about the middle of May. Although no exact tally is kept, it is estimated that nearly 250,000 birds are taken in a good season. The term “mutton-bird” is usually reserved for Pufinus griseus but to the Maori several species are included. In fact anything that is edible and can be “bagged up” is a mutton-bird. In this connection speciesinvolved in southern New Zealand include a bird known as the Korure, which is either Pterodroma inexpecta or P. cookii, or both. I have not yet had an opportunity to verify this point but both species live on some of the mutton-bird islands.

Mark Edward Dickson Lord Howe Island, southwest Pacific 1 Abstract Lord Howe Island, situated 600 km east of Australia, provides a unique opportunity to study the development of rock coast landforms and the long-term planation of an oceanic island. The island is a remnant of a large shield volcano that was built by late-Miocene hotspot volcanism. Since this time, the island has gradually migrated northward into warmer seas, and marine planation, operating at a decreasing rate over time, has reduced the island to a vestige of the original volcano. Lord Howe Island currently lies at the southern limit to coral growth.

    LHIB Rodent Eradication Project Public Environment Report 1993). The highly successful captive breeding and release program resulted in the release of 82 birds bred from just three breeding pairs originally captured (NPWS, 2002). Prior to the commencement of the program it was estimated that only 37 individuals remained in the wild. In preparation for the LHI REP, a captive management pilot study that was conducted in 2013 for woodhen and currawongs on LHI (Taronga Conservation Society Australia, 2014) has also added significant knowledge on the captive management of the two species. The pilot study showed that woodhens and currawongs could be held in large groups for prolonged periods with no observable impact. All 20 woodhens and 10 currawongs were successfully released at their individual capture sites. The trial report is included in Appendix D – LHI Trials Package. These include rangers on LHI who are involved in the capture of woodhen for banding as part of the annual monitoring of the population and Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) scientific officers (with assistance from the LHIB rangers) that have been catching and banding currawongs since 2005 to determine their population status and movements. Hand-nets will be used to capture woodhen, and clap-traps will be used for currawongs. Upon capture, birds will be placed into cloth bags or ventilated cardboard boxes (one bird per bag or box) and taken to the holding facility where they will be checked by a veterinarian.

    TasmaniART Wilderness Photography of Tasmania Southwest Tasmania Selection by Adam Holbrook The southwest of Tasmania is wild, beautiful, isolated, and very unpredictable. Along the south coast of Tasmania there is a walking track known as the South Coast Track. The eastern end of this track is at Cockle Creek (south from Southport, Lune River, Hastings Caves), and the western end is at Melaleuca, which is in the far southwest of Tasmania. Further to the southwest is a lesser travelled walking track extending to the far south- western point of Tasmania, South West Cape. To the north of South West Cape is not really a track, more just a route, along the South West Cape Range and some western beaches. To the north of these is Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour. All of these areas are located within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, and are part of the Southwest National Park. It is these areas that feature in this exhibition. The walks in this area of Tasmania are more difficult than many other Tasmanian walks, such as the Overland Track. It is normal to have wet feet every day, and there is mud at least knee deep on some parts of the track. It is often necessary to wait for water levels to recede when crossing creeks, rivers and beaches. There are numerous steep climbs, and long distances between campsites. Snakes are often seen sunning themselves on tracks or on buttongrass clumps. 1. Ketchem Bay, Tas. A little bit of time exposure was used to capture the water swirling between the rocks.

Lindblad Explorer. a well-travelled naturalist group seeking out-of­ the-way places. considered it perhaps the most beautiful island they had ever seen. The high. tree-covered hills to the north; the narrow. low cen­ tral portion (with which man has dealt most kindly); the turquoise lagoon bordered by breakers and a long. curving arch of beach; and the huge majesty of Mount Lidgbird and Mount Gower thrusting their peaks up from the Pacific to dominate the scene with white bosun birds etched against their dark basalt cliffs-a remarkable land- and seascape. The island is biologically interesting because it has rich and varied flora and fauna with an unusually high proportion of species found nowhere else. Its lovely lagoon has a flourishing coral reef - probably the southern­ most in the world. and there are many species of fish. coral. and other animals which have evolved in the area because of its relative isolation from the great coral reefs in the tropics to the north. Yet this unspoilt island with its rich natural values is not thousands of miles from anywhere- it is four hours by seaplane from Sydney, Australia's largest city.
