CULTMATRIX 4. HERITAGE IMPACT ASSESSMENT 4.1 Approach 4.1.1 Definitions and assumptions The following aspects have a direct bearing on the investigation and the resulting report: • Cultural (heritage) resources are all non-physical and physical human-made occurrences, as well as natural occurrences that are associated with human activity. These include all sites, structures and artefacts of importance, either individually or in groups, in the history, architecture and archaeology of human (cultural) development. • The cultural significance of sites and artefacts is determined by means of their historical, social, aesthetic, technological and scientific value in relation to their uniqueness, condition of preservation and research potential. It must be kept in mind that the various aspects are not mutually exclusive, and that the evaluation of any site is done with reference to any number of these. • The value is related to concepts such as worth, merit, attraction or appeal, concepts that are associated with the (current) usefulness and condition of a place or an object. Hence, in the development area, there are instances where elements of the place have a high level of significance but a lower level of value. • It must be kept in mind that significance and value are not mutually exclusive, and that the evaluation of any feature is based on a combination or balance between the two. • Isolated occurrences: findings of artefacts or other remains located apart from archaeological sites. Although these are noted and samples are collected, it is not used in impact assessment and therefore do not feature in the report. • Traditional cultural use: resources which are culturally important to people.

  • P. Nongogo‟S Report: the Olympic Movement and South Africa
    P. NONGOGO‟S REPORT: THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT AND SOUTH AFRICA The Effect of Sport Boycott and Social Change in South Africa: A Historical Perspective, 1955-2005 Abstract This study examines the effect of sport boycott in South Africa; a country with a long history of racial discrimination. The struggle for political freedoms and all-inclusive-and-non-racial sport was intertwined. The former colonial power and major investor, Britain was strategic to-and-targeted for black people‟s diplomatic efforts after the establishment of the Union of South Africa in 1910. By 1940s, however, a comprehensive campaign against apartheid was undertaken by the Africa National Congress and Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM). The oppressed majority‟s hope for-and-focus on British support had shifted to the United Nations and newly-independent African states. Non-racial sport movement approached the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Federations. South Africa‟s official participation in the Olympic Games between 1908 and 1960; racially discriminated against blacks sportspersons and resistance to this was observed in the mid-1940s. Radical struggle was, however, started in the 1950s; illustrated by the emergence of AAM and sport boycott campaigns. These campaigns were continued until controversially abandoned in the early 1990s, paving way for South Africa‟s re-admission into the Olympic family in 1992. This literature study utilized the IOC Archives. It sought to analyse the effect of sport boycott in South Africa and social change thereof, in relation to the IOC‟s attitude, response and actions towards apartheid sport in contrast to that of the non-racial sport proponents.

In South Africa, the tour was expected to reopen the doors to international competition for the Springboks after an anti-apartheid sporting boycott had forced the sport into relative isolation during the 1970s. In the face of much international condemnation, the Springboks toured to New Zealand and the USA in 1981 where they encountered large and often violent demonstrations as those who opposed the tour attempted to scuttle it.

  • Die 1981 Springbok-Rugbytoer Na Nieu- Seeland: Die Katalisator in Die Stryd Teen Apartheid in Suid-Afrikaanse Rugby
JOERNAAL/JOURNAL BARNARD/RADEMEYER DIE 1981 SPRINGBOK-RUGBYTOER NA NIEU- SEELAND: DIE KATALISATOR IN DIE STRYD TEEN APARTHEID IN SUID-AFRIKAANSE RUGBY Leo Barnard en Cobus Rademeyer1 Summary In analysing the history of South African sport the 1981-Springbok rugby tour to New Zealand is always mentioned as one of the turning points in the struggle against apartheid in South African sport. Due to the nature of the segregated sports development in South Africa, there has always been a racial undertone in the rugby relations between South Africa and New Zealand, but the All Blacks have always been one of South Africa's closest rugby allies. The 1981 tour, however, changed all of this, mainly because it caused a rift within the New Zealand rugby community and led to strong political undertones that nearly halted the tour. Various anti-apartheid groupings, the New Zealand police force and the rugby-mad New Zealand people came in confrontation with one another during the tour. This confrontation was orchestrated by 'behind the scenes' developments, and attempts by the anti-apartheid organisations to dismantle apartheid in South African sport. By disrupting and almost stopping the tour, these orchestrated attempts by the anti-apartheid movements set an example for future actions against apartheid in South African sport. These actions not only stunned the rugby public in New Zealand, but television brought these visuals to the homes of many white South Africans for whom it was their first real experience of the boycott actions against South African sport. _______________ Die veelbesproke Springbokrugbytoer na Nieu-Seeland in 1981 word algemeen aanvaar as die katalisator vir buitelandse verset teen Suid-Afrikaanse rugby gedurende die tagtigerjare.

  • First Team Schoolboy Rugby Players' Understanding of Their Future Career
First team schoolboy rugby players’ understanding of their future career trajectories By Tiaan Ellis Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Education in Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University Supervisor: Mrs Mariechen Perold Co-Supervisor: Dr Heinrich Grobbelaar December 2016 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za DECLARATION By submitting this thesis electronically, I declare that the entirety of the work contained therein is my own, original work, that I am the authorship owner thereof (save to the extent explicitly otherwise stated), that reproduction and publication thereof by Stellenbosch University will not infringe any third party rights and that I have not previously in its entirety or in part submitted it for obtaining any qualification. Signature: Date: Copyright © 2016 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved i Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT Over the past two decades, the growing global popularity of rugby has led to professional rugby becoming a lucrative career prospect with bigger contracts, sponsorships and increased specialization in the sport. It is, therefore, not surprising that many high-school learners aspire to become professional players. However, only a small percentage of these players may fulfil their ambitions. This study explored how first-team rugby players at school understand their future career paths, and how they plan for it. The investigation also explored how rugby players perceive their identity, the role of rugby in this regard, and their understanding of the transitions inherent to a career in rugby. A social constructionist and systemic meta-theoretical framework was employed to shed light on the findings.

  • Narrating the Springbok Tour
(Re)Presenting 1981: Narrating the Springbok Tour by Sebastian JS Potgieter University of Otago School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science June 2020 A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Otago (Re)Presenting 1981: Narrating the Springbok Tour Abstract The extent to which historians impose themselves on the past through their narratives remains contentious. While historians of sport have engaged these debates (e.g. Phillips, 2002; Nathan, 2003; Booth, 2005; Liberti and Smith, 2015), most continue to assume a realist correspondence between historical narratives and the past. In this thesis, I draw on Alun Munslow’s ‘deconstructive consciousness’ to analyse competing popular and academic narrative representations of the 1981 Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand between 1981 and 2019. In order to practically deconstruct these texts, I draw on Hayden White’s Model of Narrative Explanation, which focusses on the form of historical narratives and directs attention to their tropes, emplotments, arguments and ideologies. In applying White’s model, I demonstrate the literary dimensions embedded in all historical texts. Furthermore, I argue that historians are ideologically embedded in the present and project this back onto the past. As a result, changing material contexts means that our representations of the past are never static and always shifting. I map how representations of the 1981 tour have changed across three distinct epochs – 1981 – 1986; 1987 – 1994; 1995 – 2019. In deconstructing these representations of the 1981 tour, I demonstrate that history is both an empirical-analytic and narrative-linguistic discipline.
