Box 13235 Minneapolis, MN 55414-5235 USA 1 Please read these instructions carefully before casting your ballot. • Eligibility to Nominate You may nominate for the Hugo and Campbell Awards if you either: a) were an attending or supporting member of Conadian (the 1994 World Science Fiction Convention) or b) become an attending or supporting member of Intersection (the 1995 World Science Fiction Convention) by January 31, 1995. You may purchase a membership to Intersection by completing the appropriate information on this ballot and enclosing a cheque for the membership fee. If you are already a Conadian or Intersection member, do not send any money with your ballot. Just fill in your name, address and membership number so that we can verify your membership. Please print details or type them. • Deadline Ballots must be postmarked by March 30th 1995 and received by April 5th 1995 to ensure that they will be counted. Please mail as early as possible. There are two mailing addresses, one in the UK and one in the US. Both these addresses are shown overleaf, please ensure that you fold the form to reveal the appropriate address. Members outside of the US and UK should send their nominations via airmail preferably to the UK address. Do not send ballots any other way. Please seal the ballot with some tape or use an envelope. Please be sure to fill in the previous page and mail all four pages. We cannot count your ballot if you do not do this. • How to Nominate You may nominate up to five persons or works in each category. However, you are permitted (and even encouraged) to make fewer nominations or none at all if you are not familiar with the works that fall within that category. The nominations are equally weighted: the order in which you list them has no effect on the outcome. Do not bother to nominate “No Award” (unless that’s the name of a story or magazine you want to vote for). “No Award” will appear automatically in every category on the final ballot. Please include source information whenever possible. This is not mandatory, but makes it easier for us to identify the work you intend to nominate. For the fiction categories, Non-Fiction Book and Original Artwork, space has been provided for this. In the continuing categories (Dramatic Presentation and after) there is less room, but if your nominee is not well known we would appreciate your writing in a source where his or her 1994 work in that category may be found. Please type or print carefully. We cannot be responsible for what you might inadvertently nominate if your writing is not clear. The five top vote getters in each category (more in the case of ties, fewer if not many nominations are cast in that category) will appear on the final Hugo Award ballot which will be distributed with Intersection Progress Report 6 (scheduled for publication in May 1995). Only members of Intersection (including those who join after January 31st 1995) will be eligible to vote on the final ballot. • Eligibility Works published in 1994 are eligible for the 1995 Hugo Awards. Books are considered to have been published on the ‘publication date’ which usually appears with the copyright information on the back of the title page. If there is no stated publication date, the copyright date will be used instead. A dated periodical is considered to have been published on the cover date, regardless of when it was placed on sale or copyrighted. Serialised stories or dramatic presentations are eligible in the year in which the last instalment appears. A work originally appearing in a language other than English is eligible in both the year of its original appearance and in the year in which it first appears in English translation.

  • Be Mindful of the Future: Information and Knowledge Management in Star Wars Tie-In Fiction
Volume 13 Spring 2017 djim.management.dal.ca | Be mindful of the future: information and knowledge management in Star Wars tie-in fiction Diana Castillo School of Information Management, Dalhousie University Abstract In the last fifty years, media franchises have been using tie-in fiction to expand their universes and tell stories outside the main source material. This paper examines how information management is used specifically in Star Wars tie-in fiction and its recent transition to using knowledge management. To start, this paper looks at the history of tie-in fiction from its roots in the 1960s to the modern day, before transitioning to the role of brand managers and editors as information managers. Then, this paper documents the history of Star Wars tie-in fiction and how information management strategies were implemented through 2014 and how it impacted the franchise’s internal continuity. Finally, this paper examines the recent move towards a unified canon and how this shift towards knowledge management has impacted storytelling. This paper concludes that while it is too early to evaluate its results, Star Wars was uniquely situated among franchises to move towards knowledge management through its prior information management efforts. Introduction universes and tell stories they may not be able to tell otherwise. minicon50MINICON50 ARTIST MICHAEL WHELAN AUTHOR BRANDON SANDERSON AUTHOR JANE YOLEN MUSICIAN ADAM STEMPLE PUBLISHER TOM DOHERTY AUTHOR LARRY NIVEN 1 welcome! MINICON50 A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Welcome to Minicon 50! This is my sixth and final year as chair of Minicon. Two years ago when I started planning out this guest list I never actually thought I would get every one. I am very excited about this convention and have been for quite some time. We have a great convention set up for your enjoyment. Our Guests of Honor each have connections of a sort with one or more of the other Guests. For example Tom publishes Brandon’s books, Michael’s art has been on both Brandon and Larry’s covers, Adam is Jane’s son and they’ve written books together and Tom and Michael have been friends for years. Did you know four have previously been Guests at Minicon, with Jane the year before and the year after Larry was Guest, also Adam met his wife here. If you want to have a more intimate setting with one of our Guests there is limited seating for kaffeeklatschen, bierklatschen and a literary tea, so make sure you sign up at Registration. When a convention reaches 50 it must have some history, so be sure to stop by the dealers room and check out the tables of memorabilia from previous conventions. While you’re there, check out the Art Show where there will be painting demos all day Saturday. You just don’t get a better chance than this to watch an artist at work.
