19F Macm St. Martin's Press Campusland A Novel by Scott Johnston A tumultuous and often hilarious first novel about one year of insanity at the Ivy-like Devon University, a blissful bubble of elite students and the adults at their mercy. Eph Russell is an English professor up for tenure. He may look and sound privileged, but Eph is right out of gun-rack, Bible-thumping rural Alabama. Lulu Harris is an entitled freshman - er, first year - from Manhattan. Her singular ambition is to be a prominent socialite - an It Girl." While most would kill for a place at Devon, to her college is a dreary impediment. She is pleasantly surprised to find some people she can tolerate in the Fellingham Society, a group of self-professed campus monarchists. When things become socially difficult, Lulu is forced to re-channel her ambition in a most unexpected way - as a militant feminist. In the process, she and Eph will find St. Martin's Press their fates at odds. • Written Statement of David L. Cohen Executive Vice
WRITTEN STATEMENT OF DAVID L. COHEN EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT COMCAST CORPORATION TO THE U.S. SENATE COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE, SCIENCE, & TRANSPORTATION HEARING ON “AT A TIPPING POINT: CONSUMER CHOICE, CONSOLIDATION AND THE FUTURE VIDEO MARKETPLACE” JULY 16, 2014 Mr. Chairman, Ranking Member Thune, and members of the Committee, I appreciate this opportunity to testify today about the state of competition in the video marketplace. I. The Video Marketplace Is Robustly Competitive. The title of this hearing is apt – we are at a notable tipping point in the development of the video marketplace, and it is tipping decidedly in favor of American consumers. They are enjoying what many are rightly calling a “golden age” of video services thanks to an exceptionally dynamic and competitive marketplace. As David Carr of The New York Times has observed, “[t]he vast wasteland of television has been replaced by an excess of excellence.”1 A growing number of companies are producing significantly more high-quality and diverse programming than ever before. And more companies are competing to deliver that programming using a greater array of technologies and business models than ever before. And even more companies are experimenting and competing in both the production and delivery of content than at any time in our history. All of this competition is great for American consumers, giving them access to more of the content they want, whenever and wherever they want it. This competition has flourished largely because Congress, led by the bipartisan efforts of this Committee in the 1980s and 1990s, dramatically reduced the role of regulation in the video marketplace, facilitated intermodal competition, threw open the opportunity for investment in broadband Internet, and let the marketplace thrive.
