GENESIS V Dear Members & Friends of the S.I. Community, A Report to Concerned Individuals Vol. 46, No. 3 Fall 2009 It’s my honor to present you this report of our recently Rev. Robert T. Walsh, S.J. completed school year, 2008-2009. Hard to believe that it was the 40th President year on this campus, and with the opening of this school year of 2009- Mr. Joseph A. Vollert 2010, this 37th Avenue campus becomes the venue where S.I. has been Vice President for Development located longest, surpassing all of our five previous campuses. Mr. Patrick M. Ruff The face of St. Ignatius has changed many times and in many ways Principal over these 154 years, and last year was no exception. The Orradre Rev. Thomas H. O’Neill, S.J. Courtyard received an entirely different look and for the first time, a Superior translucent roof. The 40 year-old kitchen of the Carlin Commons was Mr. John J. Ring entirely gutted and redone. Then, the summer not only brought the fog Director of Alumni Relations to the coast, but the newly-leased Fairmont Field in Pacifica: completely Mr. Paul J. Totah redone so its 8.5 acres will now be home for a multitude of S.I. teams Director of Communications less than 20 minutes away from campus. Finally, the face of St. Ignatius Mrs. Cynthia Fitzgibbon (see page 71) was enshrined between the school building and Columbus Director of Special Events Piazza on campus. The face of S.I. continues to change. Mr. Fred L. Tocchini But even more profoundly, the face of St. Ignatius is seen in the Director of Special Projects faces of many Ignatians and friends who cherish S.I. In our students, Mr. John J. Grealish faculty, administrators and staff, the vision of Ignatius shines. In our Business Manager alumni, scholarship donors, benefactors, parents and friends, the spirit Ms. Marielle A. Murphy of Ignatius, who served God and others, is alive and well. The face Associate Director of Development of St. Ignatius is not just captured in beautifully sculpted bronze. It is Mrs. Nancy Hess captured in the faces of the S.I. community. Graphic Artist This past year also saw economic times hard to face and difficult to Douglas A. Salin navigate. Like so many in our country and in the Bay Area, many of SI’s families struggled financially this past year. Requests to our business office for financial aid rose sharply as parents lost their jobs or had their hours cut back; for these people, meeting tuition payments became a real challenge. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to help those families. Those who could afford to give did so thereby helping us distribute nearly $2 million to 299 families (more than 20 percent of the student body). But there’s a key chapter in the story of why SI has been able to ride out this economic storm. Years and years ago, key players in that story chose to include SI in their wills and trusts. They believed in the SI mission, one that, since 1855, has sought to form young Ignatians of “competence, conscience and compassion.” These are people whose SI experience formed not only their careers but also their lives, who see far into the future, who want their legacy to do good long after they are gone, and who believe that the Bay Area is better for having SI serve its students. When we launched our Genesis V: New Horizons campaign four years ago, we knew we could count on both groups of donors: those who decide to donate year to year and those who believe in the wisdom of planned giving. Part of our response these past years to the challenges of our times has been to provide the space and resources for our students to thrive. With your help Program Total and with a $19 million revenue bond, SI finished the 8-acre Fairmont Field complex with baseball and softball All Souls $17,246 diamonds (batting cages and pitching bullpens) and a playing field for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey. In Annual Alumni Appeal $811,378 addition to the new choral complex, weight room, piazza and classroom wing, we have renovated the kitchen facility Bingo $58,500 and covered Orradre Courtyard for increased student use. We are equally grateful for your support toward our Ignatian Guild & Fathers’ Club $1,113,826 $20 million scholarship goal. If we hope to keep our promise never to turn away a student for lack of funds, General Giving $1,220,294 especially when times are tough, it will be because of scholarships fueled by our endowment fund. Loyola Guild $12,750 In short, we’re able to carry out our mission and vision because it’s one we share with you. You believe in what we’re doing—in offering Ignatian values and Parent Pledge Program $1,445,933 quality instruction in a way that, we hope, advances the Kingdom of God. Despite turbulent economic times, the Planned Giving & Bequests $1,645,928 light of our mission shines strong and clear in large part because we have you as companions on this shared and Total Contributions $6,325,855 wonderful journey.

1943 The Class of ’43 boasts a quarterly class journal, the first edition published following a reunion in the spring of 2008. Of the 225 Ignatians who enrolled in that freshman class, some 168 graduated three and a half to four years later, the bulk of whom entered WWII military service. There are some 50 of that group who are still answering roll call and who receive copies of the journal. They wonder if there is another class that might be publishing such a periodical. A new statue of “St. Ignatius the Pilgrim” was installed over Easter break by the Columbus Piazza. Missouri artist Vicki Reid created the statue, and versions of it can be seen at St. Louis University, Georgetown, St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphisa and the Jesuit Center at Wernersville, Penn. At the May 30 graduation ceremony at St. Ignatius Church, SI President Robert Walsh, S.J. ’68, referred to this statue. Below are excerpts from his remarks to members of the Class of 2009:

“What is the shape of your hands as you commence your watch as citizens of the nation and the world? What is the intellect that you will bring to your time? What attitudes, values and virtues will guide you and arm you for the battle of good and evil and make you victorious? What heart will you have for those on the margins of life and society? Will your soul take up the clarion call to be an agent of change so that justice, peace, freedom and equality may abide for all?

“During Easter vacation, an apparition appeared on the edge of Columbus Piazza on campus. A bronzed image of Ignatius of Loyola suddenly found a home at our school named for him. Portrayed as a pilgrim, staff in one hand and a book in the other, he is in mid-step with one foot off the ground ready to move forward, ready to move on. When Ignatius dictated his life’s story, he used the term ‘the pilgrim’ to describe himself. This is the same title, Ignatius the Pilgrim, that the artist gave the statue. Ignatius was a man on the move, inspired by God’s call to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. He found God in everything and everyone along his pilgrim way. Thus, it is no surprise that his ideal of the great human being is to be a person on the move, with one foot on the ground and the other in the air, ready to go where God calls. Journey became pilgrimage with God involved.

“This may be an ideal worthy of you: to be a pilgrim, on the move, undertaking a journey toward a destination that has no map, except the example of Ignatius to follow in Christ’s footsteps. A pilgrim adventure is an awesome thing and can only be undertaken with hope and faith. Otherwise, you might as well just stay at home. We who know you, who have educated you and who love you, know you are capable and ready for this great pilgrimage as you step forward today….” SAVE THE DATE MARCHSAVE THE 6, 2010 DATE PATRICKMARCH GOUDY, AUCTION 6, CHAIRMAN 2010 TIMPATRICK MCINERNEY, GOUDY, AUCTION AUCTION VICE CHAIRMAN CHAIRMAN tTIMh MCINERNEY,e g AUCTIONre VICEa CHAIRMANt catsby RtOARhINGe 20T H SgAINTr IGNAeTIUaS FAtTH ERcS’ CLaUBt AUsCTIObN y ROARING 20TH SAINT IGNATIUS FATHERS’ CLUB AUCTION
