Welcome to Our Visitors

Thank you for sharing in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with us today. Please fill out a visitor’s card (found in the pew racks) and return it in the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit. And please introduce yourself after Mass.

If you are a Catholic, we at Our Lady of Walsingham receive Holy Communion kneeling and by intinction (both species on the tongue).

If you are not a Catholic, during Communion we invite you either to come forward with your arms crossed over your chest, or fingers across your lips, and receive a blessing from the Priest or Deacon, or remain in your pew and reflect on the presence of Christ.

Quinquagesima, Shrovetide, & Ash Wednesday

The Fathers and Doctors of the Church richly attest to the importance of the pre-Lenten Sundays as a call to ongoing conversion of life and a summons to turn to the Lord in metanoia or repent- ance. Pope Saint Gregory the Great likened the sequence of these Sundays to the call of the householder in Our Lord’s parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16, the ancient Gospel reading on Septuagesima). More recently, Blessed Pope Paul VI famously compared the ‘gesimas (as these Sundays are known) to the ringing of bells calling the faithful to church at vari- ous intervals before Mass to be ready for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

Here on the Last Sunday after Epiphany we can count some fifty days until Easter, and hence this Sunday was traditionally called Quinquagesima, an old fashioned Latinate term that can still help orient the faithful toward the great focal point and axis of liturgical time in the yearly commemo- ration of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ our Savior.

The last few days before the beginning of Lent are known as Shrovetide, a period so named be- cause it was once the time for making a good confession and for cleaning out the pantry prior to the Lenten fast. In the Middle Ages, when the rules of and abstinence were stricter, eggs, fats, and most dairy products had to be used up before Ash Wednesday--hence the old English custom of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, with great plates of bacon and sausage!

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent by bidding us contemplate our mortality and turn to God in penitence even as He turns to us in mercy. The Sacred Liturgy for Ash Wednesday as cel- ebrated at Our Lady of Walsingham testifies to the synthetic tradition of worship according to the Ordinariate form of the Roman Rite and richly frames this season of prayer and preparation for the Paschal Mystery.

The day’s service begins with a Penitential Office derived from the Sarum Use of medieval Eng- land and preserved in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Then the Holy Eucharist commenc- es this day somewhat abruptly without the usual opening prayers and moves through the Liturgy of the Word to the Invitation to a Holy Lent, after the homily, and then to the somber Imposition of Ashes. Hearkening back to ancient liturgical forms, the rite for blessing and distributing ashes prepares for the Holy Sacrifice and culminates in the solemn injunction from Genesis 3: Memen- to, homo, quia pulvis es, et in pulverem reverteris (“Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return”).

Thus signed with the ashes of death yet fed with the food of immortality, we will be ready to begin these forty days and to fast and pray with Jesus in the wilderness. Dr. Clint Brand

The five large votives can each burn for a week in honor, in thanksgiving, or in inter- cession, of your loved ones. The key ingredient to the success of the Bishop’s Appeal is partic- ipation. To reach the Ordinariate goal of $300,000, we need every household to participate. Our Parish has a goal of $72,000 for this year’s appeal. As we continue in the season of Lent, please consider a sacrificial commitment to the Bishop’s Appeal and to our work together in the service of our Lord. Help Bishop Lopes and your Ordinariate family meet the challenges we face in reach- ing out to all those who seek the fullness of faith. Visit ordinariate.net/bishops-appeal or return the pledge card and envelope provided to you last week to make your gift. (Gifts should be made payable to the Ordinariate and mailed directly to the Ordinariate.) Thank you.

You can also reach the CCD Director, Mr. Tim Caruthers, at 713-683-9407 or [email protected] MY RULE FOR LENT Confidential THE RULE OF FASTING Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year.

Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of complete abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year.

"Denying material food, which nourishes our body, nurtures an interior disposition to listen to Christ and be fed by His saving word. Through fasting and praying, we allow Him to come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we experience in the depths of our being: the hunger and thirst for God." -- Pope Benedict XVI, Message for Lent 2009.

THREE PILLARS OF LENTEN OBSERVANCE The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all observe together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is an effort to share this world equally—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents.
