  • To Our People-Animal Connection
Bi-Annual Newsletter · July 2017 TO OUR PEOPLE-ANIMAL CONNECTION FAMILY The UCLA People-Animal Connection (PAC) is dedicated to providing compassionate, world-class patient care, companionship, and warmth to more than 1,000 critically ill children and adults every month and is grateful for your support. PAC ATTENDS UCLA STUDENT-ATHLETE HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIR FOR FIRST TIME Members from the UCLA Softball team pose with PAC dogs Shepzel and Mazel. In March, the People-Animal Connection (PAC) teams had the privilege of attending the UCLA Student-Athlete Health and Wellness Fair at the J.D. Morgan Center, which serves as the “hub” for all 25 of UCLA’s intercollegiate athletic teams. The event enabled students to engage in an open conversation about mental health and substance abuse. Attending the event for the first time, PAC teams brought comfort and cheer to student-athletes heading into the winter quarter finals week. As the dogs ran around, interacting with the athletes, everyone enjoyed opportunities for plentiful petting, great conversations, and delightful Snapchat stories. Many dogs sported UCLA blue and gold accessories or wore UCLA-inspired attire, showing their support for the athletes and rooting for their success. The program is grateful for the chance to bring the soothing and friendly K-9 companionship to student-athletes. Thanks to all the wonderful PAC volunteers who contributed to the success of this event! They are hoping to return for another installment next year. PICK PICO! On May 21, PAC teams participated for the third year in the Pick Pico Event, a community celebration that features great local food and products, live entertainment, and a chance to learn about local government and nonprofit organizations.

  • THE BOWL 'CHARITY' SERIES the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) Plays a Major Role in the World of College Athletics. Every
THE BOWL ‘CHARITY’ SERIES The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) plays a major role in the world of college athletics. Every year, the BCS decides the NCAA Division I football National Champion. The BCS is comprised of four “Bowl Organizations” that each enjoy 501(c)(3) tax exempt status as charitable public benefit organizations, and each has done so since World War II. These Bowl Organizations are the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the Fiesta Bowl. The IRS, in their Letters of Recognition of 501(c)(3) status to each Bowl Organization, states that the public benefit these organizations offer is “educational.” Despite being considered “charitable” organizations for tax purposes, the BCS Bowl Organizations are currently under attack for instead serving private interests. Although the actual percentage of revenues a “charitable” organization donates to charitable causes is not a true indicia of being considered a “charitable organization” for 501(c)(3) status, it is a good measurement to compare with an organization’s other expenditures. In 2011, the BCS held 23 bowl games that produced $186.3 million. The total charitable contribution for the BCS was $3.2 million, or a mere 1.7% of revenue. When considering whether a Bowl Organization fails the private inurement requirement of the operational test for 501(c)(3) status, it will not “look good” if the organization paid its Executive Officers more in salary and benefits than money they donated to charitable causes.1 The most criticized Bowl Organization of the four is surely the Fiesta Bowl. In the last Fiesta Bowl on January 2013, the Oregon Ducks defeated the Kansas State Wildcats in Glendale, AZ.

Judge To Rose Bowl, Pasadena: Why Are You Fighting? By Lauren Berg Law360 (May 14, 2021, 7:51 PM EDT) -- A California federal judge asked Pasadena and the organization behind the Rose Bowl Game during a hearing Friday why they are in court fighting over who has control of the famous annual college football game, asking if the century-old partners could resolve the issue on their own. During a remote hearing over the city's motions to toss the suit, U.S. District Judge André Birotte Jr. asked the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association to explain what relief it hopes to win from the court, pointing out that the parties don't dispute that the organization owns the trademark associated with the Rose Bowl Game. A. John P. Mancini of Mayer Brown LLP, an attorney representing the organization, told the judge there is a dispute over whether Pasadena has the right to block the organization from moving the football game to another location during a force majeure event, like the coronavirus pandemic. The organization contends it had a right to move last year's game to Texas because of social distancing constraints in California. In response to Judge Birotte's query as to why the organization is making trademark claims now, Mancini said Pasadena improperly used the Rose Bowl mark in an Instagram post and that the city's mayor claimed in an interview with The New York Times in January that the city "shares a trademark on the name of the game" and that the game "belongs" to the city.
