    Fontmell Magna Kelly’s Directory of Dorsetshire From the early 19th century, until well into the 20th century, the publication of postal, street and commercial directories was a common occurrence. From the mid-19th century these publications gave a description of each parish as well as listing all the farmers, tradesmen and nobility/gentlemen of the parish. It was Kelly's Directory (which started life as the Post Office Directory) that came to dominate the market from 1848 to 1939, but there were also directories by Hunt & Co. in 1851, J. G. Harrod in 1865, and Mercer & Crocker in 1871. Extracts of the directories featuring Fontmell Magna have been transcribed from original books in our Archive and at the Dorset History Centre. 1848 Post Office Directory of Dorsetshire etc. (published by W. Kelly and Co) FONTMELL MAGNA, a parish with the tything of four pinnacles, and bells. The south porch is very Hartgrove, the latter is in the borough of Shaftesbury, and curious.
