Dear Mike:

Greetings from Boston. It certainly is a full time job trying to convert the opposition party up here. The President's victory in November will be just retaliation.

I just wanted to say thanks again for your time and guidance over the last few years. It was an honor as well as a good education to be a member of the "Deaver Camp" at the White House. Knowing how busy you are I appreciate the fact that you always found time to assist me. It's rather late in arriving, but I am sending my resignation letter for th~~jj> President to you. He is often accused of being unfair. I guess my ~ 1~ opportunity to serve in the Private Sector Initiatives Office gave me an ~_h .t.....1'-4' insight about his philosophy of helping others which, unfortunately, some -- - - r ~ people will never realize.

Anyway, I thought you would be interested in the letter and I would greatly appreciate it if you would make sure it gets into the appropriate channels.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you or the President during my stint in Boston. Rescheduling a tennis game is fairly easy to do in academic life so I'm available.

All my best to the Deavers, Bill, Donna and Gail.

Thanks.

Dear Mr. President:

I hope you know how proud I was to be there for the kickoff in Fountain Valley (I don't think I've· ever appeared before an audience that big ... it's a little scary, isn't it?) and how glad I am that your people are giving me some chores to do in the campaign.

I also hope you'll forgive my temerity in offering a suggestion. (Boy, even when things are going perfectly, your friends can't help giving you advice.) Almost the only thing Frightened Fritz seems to have to offer the last week or so is "How come Reagan won't come out and campaign?· Discuss the is-sues! Why is he shut up there in the White House ... he should come out and fight!"

As no doubt has occurred to you, the obvious response is, "My opponent is campaigning non-stop and full time ... all day, everyday, speeches, rallies, interviews. He insists that I should, too. He doesn't have anything else to do, though. The American people are paying me a salary to be President. I certainly hope they give me another shot at it, but it seems to me I've got to put in some time on the job while they make up their minds."

As I said, it's the obvious retort. You're also better able to bring it off than anyone in political history. I hope to see you on election night.

As ever,

Dear Mr. Deaver:

Press reports have been speculating that you will be leaving government service to join private business sometime in May this year. If these reports are accurate, I wish to congratulate you on adding another chapter of outstanding contributions to this country i n your key White House post in the last four years. Your distinguished public service record has been a source of admiration to many who know you here and abroad.

Back in early 1980, I recall we planned at one time to work toge ther to develop new corporate and i nternational accounts for the then Deaver & Hannaford, I nc . in Los Angeles. But due to circumstances beyond my control , I was unavailabl e to do so at tha t time. I have since retired and am now self-employed as a trade and public relations consultant specializing in the Orient. I am also happy to say that my family and I are now naturalized American citizens and are settled down here in Los Angeles. When you re-enter the private business sector and are interested in promoting business in Asia such as , , Japan, the Philippines and other areas, I shall be most happy to be of assistance to you and your f irm as I have excellent contacts there. I woul appreciate having an appointmen.t with you to discuss matters of mutual interest as soon as you are ready , e ither in Washington , D.C. or in Los Angeles .

With warmest personal regards. M . Js-'0#+ Ca~ ~o \ ,\ \

Dear Mike:

There are no words to describe our gratification and satisfaction for the victory which we all witnessed last night. Of course our first thanks and appreciation go to President and Mrs. Reagan. His leadership and his conviction convinced many Americans that under President Reagan we have a stronger America and a more peaceful world. His triumph is our triumph and his victory is our victory. I am very proud to be part of the team.

You as a leading architect of this campaign certainly can take pride in saying you have done it again. The next four years there's much more work to be done as our President has told us and you can count on It¥ support and cooperation. As many of us predicted, we have lost two seats in the Senate but gained strength in the House. I do think President Reagan has had the best lieutenants on his team. The Republican Party and the nation CMe all of you their thanks and appreciation.

I look forward to continue working with you in any way I can. Sincerely,

Anna Chennault I •

Dear Mike:

Two recent articles have been brought to my attention stating that you and I have a communications problem. The contention is both inaccurate and hurtful to the President. I suppose it helps someone in this town else it would not be said.

True, in our present responsibilities, our trails rarely cross for the first time in 18 years.

You are always welcome here for lunch. You'd enjoy the buffalo.

Michael Deaver 4521 Dexter St. N.W. Washington, D.C. 20007 Dear Mike, I can't begin to thank you sufficiently for all that you did to help my campus in dealing with H.U .D. Our little group met with a full dozen departmental personnel last week and in little more than an hour all problems were smoothly resolved. I know this was neither an accident nor a matter of our skill as negotiators. The H.U.D. folk came prepared to be as helpful as possible--thanks to you, Tom Gibson and Deborah Gore Dean. It was damned heady to be given such a red carpet treatment. There are a few key folks around this campus who now have a far more sanguine outlook toward us Republican-types. Many congratulations on the overwhelming re-election. It was, though short, the most enjoyable election night I've ever sat through. I hope all of your efforts in the second administration are as successful as they can be. If you guys are looking for a young replacement for Terrell Bell let me know. Once again, my deep appreciation and gratitude for your assistance. We would have been dead in the water without it. Best to Carolyn, Amanda and Blair. Hope you're out our way in the near future. All drinks are on me. Sincerely,

Dear Mike,

Just a note to say 11 Hello 11 and wish you well on your new venture. You must have a few extra heartbeats and a tear or two on leaving someone you've been so dedicated to, . and who so obviously has benefited tremendously from your long association, as I'm sure Mr. Reagan is well aware. I admire you and your colleagues for your dedication to your country . You must have lots of courage to do your job in spite of the flak you all must receive from the various special interest groups. Mr. Meese made a good public showing of what you guys can do when confronted with basic narrow mindedness. All the best to you and Caroline and the kids ,
