Page 10 Pentecost Sunday June 9, 2019 It is that time of year again where we will begin accepting nominations for new members to the St. Mark the Evangelist Pastoral Council. New members chosen for the Council will serve a 3year term beginning in October of 2019. To be eligible for nomination to the Pastoral Council, you must meet the following qualifications: You must be a registered member of St. Mark’s. You must be a yearround member of the parish. You must be active in a ministry here at St. Mark’s. The Parish Council is an advisory council, so you must be willing to make recommendations for the good and overall wellness of the entire St. Mark Community. Parishioners interested in serving on the Pastoral Council should write a letter of application detailing their experiences which qualify them as a viable candidate. Letters should be addressed to St. Mark Parish c/o Ron Hoppe and received no later than August 12th, 2019. Those parishioners deemed qualified will be placed in a pool from which the next Pastoral Council will be chosen by the Matthias Method.

A few years ago, there was an atheist living in Frankenmuth, Michigan. He complained about two Crosses on a bridge in town. He insisted that they be removed and so the town removed them. Then he decided that since he was successful with that, the City Shield should also be changed since it had a heart with a Cross inside signifying the city’s Lutheran beginnings. At that point, the residents decided they had had enough. Hundreds made their opinions known by placing small Crosses in their front yards. Seeing this quiet but powerful statement, the man removed his complaint. Those simple Crosses remain in those yards today. It is time to have a small Cross in millions of front yards across our Country. This would provide a powerful and inspiring message for all passing by them every day. There are those that say we are not a Christian nation while others are trying to remove from our history and current lives any reference to God, prayer, or the fact that our country was founded on JudeoChristian principals. It’s time to stand up and make a statement: a small, quiet, but powerful statement. Place a white Cross in your front yard for all to see that we stand together for our Religious Heritage and Freedom. Next weekend, the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, will be giving out free small white Crosses after all Masses outside of Church.

Join us on Sunday June 23rd as St. Mark’s celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi in Procession immediately after the 10:00 AM Mass. "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you; he who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” N John 6:53, 54 Corpus Christi means “Body of Christ” in . The feast dates back to the Middle Ages and became a feast in 1312. It parallels the on Maundy (Holy) Thursday, but is a more joyous celebration and one of thanksgiving, as Christ’s prophecies of His death, resurrection and ascension into Heaven have been fulfilled. He also sent the Holy Spirit to His disciples, and the Holy Trinity was revealed to mankind N all as He promised. The official title of this Solemnity was changed in 1970 to The Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), and in the United States, it is usually celebrated on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. In the 13th century, a young Augustinian in France, Juliana, had a profound devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and thought the Church should set aside a special feast day in its honor. She petitioned three senior clergymen. One of them, the of Liege, was the first to declare that this feast day be celebrated in his diocese annually. After Sister Juliana N later Saint Juliana N and the Bishop of Liege died, the feast of Corpus Christi became more wide- spread in Europe. In 1264, Urban IV formally instituted the Feast of Corpus Christi to be celebrated the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. That same year, he commissioned St. to compose a Mass and Office especially for this feast. A procession with the Holy Eucharist often takes place, even in AngloCatholic services. The Host is placed in a monstrance. The priest, facing the congregation, elevates the monstrance and while holding it under a canopy, the congregation may then follow it in a procession outside and around the church, stopping at four altars for prayers, song, and readings from the . The outside procession concludes at the final altar with the closing Benediction. We invite all of you to join us for our celebration of “The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ” as we honor Corpus Christi at the Mass and during our procession around the church, and to the four altars outside our church.

Page 12 Pentecost Sunday June 9, 2019 PRAYING THE ROSARY—Part 2 During each of her apparitions at Fatima, our Lady pleaded for the more frequent use of her beloved Rosary. She urged us to pray it, not just say it. Mere recitation cannot bring about the vital changes in our lives that we so much need. Only devout meditation on the events in the lives of Christ and His Mother can do that. Consider using these simple meditations from “Let’s Pray (not just say) the Rosary” by Richard Rooney, SJ. The Joyful Mysteries: [Simply say one of the meditations before each Hail Mary.] 2nd Mystery The Visitation 1. Our Lady had heard from that her cousin, Elizabeth, is to have a baby. 2. Wishing to help her, Mary journeys from into the Judean hill country to Elizabeth’s home. 3. Coming to her cousin’s front door, our Lady greets her. 4. The presence of Mary’s Son within his Mother causes Elizabeth’s son, John, to leap with joy in his mother’s womb. 5. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth cries, “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!”. 6. Filled with God’s joy and love, our Lady chants her glorious Magnificat: “My soul doth magnify the Lord.” 7. For three months, she stays there helping Elizabeth. 8. She washes dishes, mends clothes, sweeps the floor, prepares the meals. 9. She talks and prays and works with her elderly cousin. 10. Then, her services being needed no more, she takes the long journey home. (Watch for additional meditations in future bulletins.)
