Deterioration of building ceramics by environmental factors DETERIORATION OF BUILDING CERAMICS BY ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS - A CASE STUDY ON ZSOLNAY CERAMICS FROM THE MUSEUM OF APPLIED ARTS (BUDAPEST) 1 2 3 4 ÁGNES BARICZA , BERNADETT BAJNÓCZI , MÁRIA TÓTH , CSABA SZABÓ 1. Introduction Nowadays much more attention is being paid to the influence of mankind on our environment than previously. The expansion of urban conglomerations and the developing industry has resulted in an increased amount of aggressive pollutants [1]; therefore in the 21st century one of the major roles of society is to conserve its historical and cultural heritage. Pollutants from transport, heating and industry deposit on the built environment, causing its deterioration. Deterioration of natural building materials, like stone (e.g. freshwater and coarse limestone), is subject of numerous studies [e.g. 2], however few studies are designed to research the effect of air pollutants (e.g. sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, soot, dust) on man-made silicate-based materials (ceramic, glaze, glass, etc.). In Budapest there are many examples of historic buildings covered with glazed ceramics (e.g. the Museum of Applied Arts, Parliament, the Geological Institute and Matthias Church). It is widely accepted that, as Tournié and Ricciardi state, “the high melting temperatures of ceramics and glasses implies that diffusion coefficients of most of the elements are too low at ambient temperature to be significant at human lifespan and these materials are often considered to be corrosion resistant” [3]. However, the air pollutants derived from different sources can damage ceramics and glasses easily if these silicate-based materials are exposed for a long time to the harmful factors.

  • Art Contacts Between Great Britain and Hungary at the Turn of the Century
ART CONTACTS BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN AND HUNGARY AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY KATALIN KESERŰ ELTE BTK Művészettörténeti Tanszék, Budapest, Hungary In the 19th century, the points of orientation for Hungarian artists were the great traditional art centres of the continent. The movement, however, that began to unfold in Great Britain from the middle of the century created a perfectly new situation. The interest in the island kept growing. The Pre-Raphaelites, and later the Arts & Crafts movement, also raised the question of the interrelation of art and society in terms of progress through art. (This also roused the interest of the leaders and intellectuals of a Hungary stricken with social problems.) Eventually art, at least its branches in connec tion with industrial or economic structures (applied art, architecture), contributed to modern civilization taking root in Hungary. In this process, British-Hungarian relations reached their summit around the turn of the century. These contacts were such that they exerted and influence not only on style (the union of modernism and national tradition) but also on the theory of art and society. These contacts came to a head in 1894-1904, as Hungary's prestige rose in Anglo- Hungarian relations. It was followed by the period of strengthening a modern national style, appreciated and backed up by the British art writers, although the country was gradually losing its prestige in England due to the Hungarian political drive at inde pendence. It may be partly attributed to the decline of Great Britain's initiatives that it acknowledged this faraway outpost of its world power.

Liberty Bridge (Szabadsag hid) Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd,is maybe the less attractive bridge in the city center ) is the one located at the southern end of city center, leading to Gellert Hill. The 333.6 m long bridge was built between 1894 and 1896. Its middle part was destroyed during World War II but it was rebuilt in 1945, and further restoration work was conducted to eliminate all war-related damage between 2007 and 2009. The bridge's main ornaments, four falcon-like bronze statues sitting on top of the bridge's four central masts (these are actually turuls, a mythological bird that represents power, strength and nobility in Hungary), were also restored. The bridge was originally named after the Emperor Franz Joseph, but it was renamed Liberty Bridge when the country was liberated from the Nazi occupation by the Soviet army at the end of World War II in 1945. The same year, the Liberation Monument was erected at the top of Gellert Hill. This imposing statue takes on the form of a woman holding a palm leaf above her head and can best be admired while crossing the bridge. 2. Last summer, the Hungarian Cultural Center, renamed Balassi Institute to emphasize the common “brand” and the mission it shares with 19 other Balassi centers from London to New Delhi, had just undergone a major reorganizational period. The new crew was arriving and we were getting a sense of how rich a cultural environment the City is and how much effort it would take to make cultural events happen that would register on the radar of New York’s numerous and hungry, but also picky arts and culture crowd. One day, the office phone rang. It was Julia Kunin, who cut right to the chase: she told us she was trying to make a project happen and was wondering if the Balassi Institute was interested in getting on board. By means of art and architectural representation, it was possible to bring people together in the pursuit of enduring their nationhood, to make them proud of their identity and to create a new concept of the country with a powerful historical background. Within this context, Hungary from the Compromise with Austria in 1867 up to the second decade of 20th century, and Turkey starting from the Second Constitution in 1908 until the mid-century possess proper examples of architectural production firmly connected to the identity search of both countries. This study aims to investigate the manifestations of this approach through case studies mainly from two capitals, Budapest and Ankara. While comparatively examining the chosen buildings regarding their structural features, spatial organisations, contents and function, the general architectural environment and leading actors of the era are aimed to be revealed. Additionally, the quality of the buildings themselves as display objects will be investigated.
