Kiváló minőségét és időtállóságát sok ezer épület hirdeti, mint például a budapesti Mátyás templom, az Országháza, az Iparművészeti Múzeum, a Földtani Intézet, a Kőbányai Templom, a Gellért Fürdő, a kecskeméti Czifra palota és Városháza, vagy a pécsi Postapalota. Az 1886-ban beindult pirogránit kályhagyártás érzékenyen követte a módosabb, városi polgárság ízlését, igényét, la- kásaik enteriőrjét. A lot of buildings erected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, typically built in the art nouveau style, were deco- rated using Zsolnay ceramics products. To this day, they bear silent witness to the durability of pirogranite. Pyrogranite’ refers to a range of ceramics developed by the Zsolnay company in the early 1880s. The name is a com- bination of ‘pyro’, which refers to the high temperature at which the products are burnt, and ‘granite’, which signifies durability. This porous material resists acids and sub-zero temperatures, which means that it can endure damp, cold, and the polluted city air. As a result, it is ideal for decorating buildings, roof tiling, and making ornamental objects to be displayed indoors or outdoors, or stoves and fireplaces. Pyrogranite architectural ornaments have been manufactured since the 1890s. No wonder that the leading architects of Austria-Hungary, including Miklós Ybl, Ödön Lechner, Béla Lajtai, and Imre Steindl, liked to use it so much. Its out- standing quality and durability is illustrated by thousands of buildings, including Matthias Church in Budapest, the Parliament building, the Museum of Applied Arts, the Geological Institute, Kőbánya Church, Gellért Spa, the Czifra Palace and City Hall in Kecskemét, and the Post Palace in Pécs. Pyrogranite stoves were first made in 1886, and never ceased to be adapted to reflect the tastes and requirements of the well-off burghers, as well as the interior decoration of their homes. Many Zsolnay pyrogranite stoves and fireplaces made around the turn of the century, while antiques by now, are still fully functional. Fireplaces have been back in vogue in the past few years, which prompted the company to relaunch its stove and fireplace production operations. The heater that used to be seen only in aristocratic palaces and the salons of rich burghers is now typically situated in the living room. Using old style guides, an art nouveau fireplace and various stove tiles were relaunched. Decoration options include single-colour gilded or eosine glazing, and multi-colour glazing as well. .

Introduction Nowadays much more attention is being paid to the influence of mankind on our environment than previously. The expansion of urban conglomerations and the developing industry has resulted in an increased amount of aggressive pollutants [1]; therefore in the 21st century one of the major roles of society is to conserve its historical and cultural heritage. Pollutants from transport, heating and industry deposit on the built environment, causing its deterioration. Deterioration of natural building materials, like stone (e.g. freshwater and coarse limestone), is subject of numerous studies [e.g. 2], however few studies are designed to research the effect of air pollutants (e.g. sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, soot, dust) on man-made silicate-based materials (ceramic, glaze, glass, etc.). In Budapest there are many examples of historic buildings covered with glazed ceramics (e.g. the Museum of Applied Arts, Parliament, the Geological Institute and Matthias Church). It is widely accepted that, as Tournié and Ricciardi state, “the high melting temperatures of ceramics and glasses implies that diffusion coefficients of most of the elements are too low at ambient temperature to be significant at human lifespan and these materials are often considered to be corrosion resistant” [3]. However, the air pollutants derived from different sources can damage ceramics and glasses easily if these silicate-based materials are exposed for a long time to the harmful factors.

The movement, however, that began to unfold in Great Britain from the middle of the century created a perfectly new situation. The interest in the island kept growing. The Pre-Raphaelites, and later the Arts & Crafts movement, also raised the question of the interrelation of art and society in terms of progress through art. (This also roused the interest of the leaders and intellectuals of a Hungary stricken with social problems.) Eventually art, at least its branches in connec­ tion with industrial or economic structures (applied art, architecture), contributed to modern civilization taking root in Hungary. In this process, British-Hungarian relations reached their summit around the turn of the century. These contacts were such that they exerted and influence not only on style (the union of modernism and national tradition) but also on the theory of art and society. These contacts came to a head in 1894-1904, as Hungary's prestige rose in Anglo- Hungarian relations. It was followed by the period of strengthening a modern national style, appreciated and backed up by the British art writers, although the country was gradually losing its prestige in England due to the Hungarian political drive at inde­ pendence. It may be partly attributed to the decline of Great Britain's initiatives that it acknowledged this faraway outpost of its world power.

Liberty Bridge (Szabadsag hid) Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd,is maybe the less attractive bridge in the city center ) is the one located at the southern end of city center, leading to Gellert Hill. The 333.6 m long bridge was built between 1894 and 1896. Last summer, the Hungarian Cultural Center, renamed Balassi Institute to emphasize the common “brand” and the mission it shares with 19 other Balassi centers from London to New Delhi, had just undergone a major reorganizational period. The new crew was arriving and we were getting a sense of how rich a cultural environment the City is and how much effort it would take to make cultural events happen that would register on the radar of New York’s numerous and hungry, but also picky arts and culture crowd. One day, the office phone rang.
