University Counseling Services

The mission of University Counseling Services is to provide effective services for members of the campus community by trained professionals in the Counseling Center, the Testing Center, and the Women’s Center. Through mental health services, testing services, education, advocacy, and empowerment, we work together to help develop and maintain a positive and cooperative campus environment that promotes the retention and graduation of all students.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center conducted 3,426 counseling sessions. These included 2,923 scheduled individual, couple, and group counseling sessions, and 503 walk-in sessions.

The Counseling Center provided counseling services for more than 480 individuals (faculty, staff, and students), in addition to participants in group sessions. We also provided numerous consultations with faculty, staff, family members, roommates, and friends of clients and potential clients.

Counseling Center staff provided more than 70 talks and presentations for more than 2,500 individuals across campus. These included trainings for RAs, RDs, Peer Mentors, Summer O Counselors, and College Heads. Other presentations included talks for Transitions classes and various talks requested for Greek students and other classes and groups. In addition, staff members participated in each of the Summer Orientation days and provided information tables at Racer Days and the Admitted Student Open House.

The Director of University Counseling Services is an active member of several university-wide committees, including the Student Intervention Team, Campus Safety Committee, Health Initiatives Coalition, Title IX Campus Climate Group, LGBT Advisory Board, and the Sexual Assault Response Team.

Testing Center

The Testing Center administered 2,528 tests, including the ACT, GRE, LSAT, CLEP, Compass, MAT, TOEFL, Praxis Series, and Distance Learning Tests (proctored exams).

This year we opened a new STN Testing Center in Alexander Hall in conjunction with the College of Education and Human Services to assist education students who need to complete the Praxis exams. We are also in the process of becoming certified to offer GED testing in our Center.

Women’s Center

Via education, advocacy, resources, and services, the Women’s Center supports and empowers women and men to unite as equal partners and become leaders on campus and beyond. The Center works every day to reduce violence against women and sex discrimination, to promote women’s physical and mental health and well-being, and to generate dialogue about women, gender, and sexual politics. Ultimately, the Women's Center works to encourage each student to take personal responsibility for creating an environment that is safe, equitable, and healthy for men and women even beyond their time here at MSU.

The Women’s Center sponsored awareness campaigns on domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, eating disorders, and gender inequality during the 2015-2016 academic year, while also speaking with more than 20 student groups and intro-level classes. Additionally, the Women’s Center Coordinator facilitated the implementation of university-mandated training on responsible alcohol use for incoming students and at-risk groups, reaching over 3,000 students on MSU’s campus.

Murray State University 100 2015 - 2016 Fact Book UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES The Murray State University Libraries serve as the intellectual commons of the university. By providing traditional and evolving services, resources and information literacy instruction in a space conducive to diverse learning needs, we prepare the university community to effectively navigate and apply a world of information, media and technology. The University Libraries fulfill this mission through: • Providing instruction in information, media and technological literacy skills using appropriate instruction methods and tools to teach the university community how to find, assess and use information; • Supporting the curricular and research needs of the university community through continually acquiring, maintaining, preserving and managing access to quality materials in varying formats, as determined by effective collection assessment; • Adapting physical and virtual spaces to the changing technological and learning needs of the university community through maintaining, and planning for new, responsive learning environments. Measurement of instruction is operationalized using numbers of instruction sessions taught and research interactions completed. 2011-12 2012-13 2013-14 2014-15 Instruction Sessions Taught 379 300 323 317 Participants in Instruction Sessions 7,254 5228 7,224 7,914 Research Interactions 18,223 11,772 22,113 7,351

As part of the Learning Commons philosophy, Waterfield also incorporates several student- oriented services within the building itself. The Racer Writing Center and the Racer Oral Communication Center offer assistance with both individual appointments and group workshops. Two classrooms are available for instruction from both the library faculty and faculty from around campus. Copy Express offers many printing services, and Starbooks coffee shop provides drinks and snacks for visitors to purchase.

The Murray State University Alumni Association was organized June 1, 1926, to provide an opportunity for graduates, former students, faculty, staff, and members of the governing board of the institution to coordinate their efforts on behalf of the University. A long held dream of the Alumni Association was realized in 2002 with the completion of the Sid Easley Alumni Center, located adjacent to at the north entrance of the Murray State University campus. The facility serves as a central location for alumni to gather for meetings, receptions and other events when returning to their alma mater.

The Alumni Association serves the University by (a) awarding student scholarships; (b) recognizing outstanding faculty through Distinguished Professor, Distinguished Researcher and Emerging Scholar Awards; (c) recognizing outstanding alumni through Distinguished Alumnus Awards; (d) providing social, athletic and academic opportunities for alumni; and (e) serving as a liaison between the University and its alumni constituency.

The Alumni Association established a scholarship program in 1941, awarding one scholarship in the amount of $100. The association now oversees 99 scholarships.

Alumni programs and services are overseen by the Board of Governors. Specific projects and programs such as the annual Homecoming and Golden Year Class Reunion activities are carried out by the Board with the assistance of other alumni volunteers and the Offices of Alumni Affairs and Development.

Programs offered by the Alumni Association include an affinity credit card program, Liberty Mutual insurance partnership, group life and health insurance plans and a brick program offering personalized bricks that are permanently placed in the patio area of the Alumni Center, of which proceeds support alumni programming. The Alumni Association provides alumni a monthly e-newsletter that includes timely information about on- and off-campus alumni events.

Starting in fall 2013, the Alumni Association re-established the membership program for sustainability of the many programs for alumni engagement. The nominal fee associated with membership includes benefits associated with campus partnerships and local partnerships.

Murray State University 111 2015 - 2016 Fact Book MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION 2015 – 2016

The Murray State University Foundation was established in 1946 to “do and perform all things necessary for the development, growth, expansion, progress, the accomplishment of educational objectives, the development of the physical plant, the improvement of the faculty, and aid to the student body and alumni of Murray State University.” A Kentucky non-profit 501(C)(3) corporation that is separate and not affiliated with the university, the MSU Foundation serves as the umbrella organization for accepting private support to the University.

The business policies, procedures, and goals of the Foundation are established by a 30-member Board of Trustees including the president of Murray State University, two members of the faculty and staff, and a minimum of two alumni of the University.

The duties and responsibilities of the Foundation include the administration of scholarship funds, endowments, and other contributions that are established through private support. The Foundation administers planned, current, and deferred gifts. Gift arrangements through trusts, annuities, bequests, and insurance policies account for numerous endowments which fund scholarships and other educational programs. The Foundation staff ensures that the stated objectives of the donor are met, currently managing over 800 scholarships and endowment accounts.

Contributions received by the MSU Foundation are administered by the Joint Investments Committee. The Committee establishes the investment policy and supervises the portfolio of the Murray State University Foundation. The investment pool is comprised of Foundation funds as well as funds held for the Alumni Association and Murray State University. The Joint Investment Committee is composed of at least two members of the Murray State University Board of Regents, two members of the Alumni Council, and three members of the Board of Trustees.

The Foundation investment pool is in excess of $91 million, with total assets in excess of $110.4 million. The Foundation provides more than $1.45 million in scholarship awards to deserving students annually.

Information about making donations may be obtained through the MSU Office of Development web site. You may reach the Office of Development by phone at 877-282-0033.

The Murray State University Foundation, Inc. operates the Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course. A championship course, the par-71 layout was built on land donated in 1979 by L. D. Miller, a 1937 MSU alumnus who died in 1992. The golf course is located three miles off Highway 94 East on Highway 280 in Murray, Kentucky.
