Guildford Cricket Club 1st XI Start: 12.00pm (100-overs format) A warm Sutton Cricket Club welcome to everyone at Cheam Road today for this 1st Division Round 8 fixture. We trust you enjoy your visit. Special greetings also to our visitors today, Guildford Cricket Club. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR XI’s PLAYING THIS WEEKEND; AND TO THOSE NON-PLAYING MEMBERS, WE TRUST YOU ENJOY YOUR CRICKET VIEWING! Surrey Championship 1st XI Division 1 retains ’100-overs’ format for 2021! After seven weeks of 100-overs matches, the Surrey Championship was due to start its nine rounds of time/declaration games this weekend. Today’s fixture versus Guildford CC would have been Sutton’s first in the series of time/declaration games. However, the government/ECB restrictions on dressing room and pavilion use, etc. are not being lifted further for at least another three weeks plus. Given the circumstances, the Championship asked for input from the ten 1st Division clubs as to which game format they preferred to follow for the remainder of the season. The consensus, accepted by the League, was for this year’s 1st Division competition to continue as a 100-overs only competition. Thus, no time/declaration games are to be played this season in the 1st Division. The next nine fixtures, including today’s, will start at 12.00pm; the final two, at 11.30am. The development of young cricketers and elite players is a central ambition of the Club; and the Club exists to foster community participation and membership is open to all. The Club’s origins date back to 1866 and the Club has been continuously based and played its home matches at The Sports Ground, Woodbridge Road since 1922. The Club is a founding member of The Surrey Championship and has played league cricket since 1972. Club activities Today the Club operates a number of teams, including four Men’s Saturday league teams, an Academy (U21) team, a Development (U18) team, two Women’s teams, and a vast programme of boys’ and girls’ junior cricket (ages 7- 17). The Club is widely admired for its Junior Section, which has produced a number of first class and international cricketers, including Ashley Giles, Darren and Martin Bicknell, Jade Dernbach, Rikki Clarke and Ollie Pope. Guildford is also the only club in Surrey which hosts first class cricket annually. Each summer the Club hosts the Guildford Cricket Festival Week at Woodbridge Road, when Surrey CCC plays a four day County Championship Match and a limited overs match. In preparation for the Festival, the ground is be transformed by the erection of corporate tents and seating for spectators. Guildford is ECB Clubmark accredited, a Surrey Focus Club and is registered with HMRC as a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC).Renowned cricket writer, David Frith, compiled a fascinating story to mark the 75th anniversary of the Guildford Cricket Festival. This history of the game reveals the important part the town has played in its development from the earliest times and illustrates the unique and extraordinary cricket heritage that Guildford and its surroundings provide. Packed with photographs, it also charts the 1st class cricket played at Woodbridge Road and the success of Guildford Cricket Club too. The book can be purchased with a limited edition hardback for £75, signed by David Frith, Darren and Martin Bicknell, Ashley Giles and Rikki Clarke. Alternatively, the paperback offers fantastic value at £5, plus postage and packing. It is a must for every lover of the game. Will Harris (54) and James Godrich’s unbeaten 52 down the order lifted the hosts from 125-8 to 190-8, proving sufficient as Leatherhead were dismissed for 158, Hugo Darby claiming 4-38. Malden Wanderers remain second, 16 points behind, after a comfortable victory over Guildford. Zac Elkin batted through the visitors’ innings to finish on 114no, enjoying an unbroken third wicket partnership of 181 with Pete Young. The left-hander entered at 57-3 but played superbly for 76no on his return to Woodbridge Road, Wanderers reaching 238-3. Guildford’s reply had declined to 155-6 when rain arrived with 10 overs remaining, falling well short of the revised DLS score of 185. Pandemic hits league It wasn’t just rain causing issues on Saturday, a number of matches from first to fourth team level were cancelled because of players being forced to quarantine due to the pandemic. The Surrey Championship, following advice from the Surrey Cricket Foundation and ECB, has issued a protocol to clubs over steps to take should a player or official return a positive test. The 1st XI match at Beddington was cancelled due to our squad needing to self isolate following a Covid 19 infection of one of our players. This match will not be replayed. The 2nd XI played very well to defeat Valley End at Cheam Road. Having been asked to bat, Sutton found runs hard to come by early on although 14 year old Ansh Bansal played nicely for 43. A 97 run partnership between Rehan Ratnasabapathy (55) and Steve Dolben (48) enabled a decent total of 207. It was spin, predominantly, that won the game for Sutton with Anirudh Muraly and Bansal's combined 20 overs conceding just 60 runs to stifle the visitor's middle order and Dan Edwards 4 wickets later on and a brace for George Duckworth earned a fine team success. The 3rd XI lost a low scoring game at Banstead by 21 runs. Banstead scored 157 for 9 off their 50 overs but Sutton's innings never really got going. The 4th XI won a close game at Holmwood Close against Oxted & Limpsfield. Batting first, Sutton's 171 for 8 off 40 overs looked a decent total but the visitors matched them all the way only to fall 12 short after some good death bowling. Sutton remain well clear at the top of the table. A youthful ten man 5th XI, led by Sam Mannion, defeated Dorking 4th XI at Stoke Rec in Guildford. A total of just 94 (Nandwani 36 - Paliwal 25) was defended for a 24 run win with some fine bowling from our young colts (Arav 4 for 26).
