As with previous editions, this booklist is designed for students who'are ,ableto read but who lack the motivation to do so because they have not encountered reading matter that speaks to:their interests and concerns. As reluctant readers, these teenagers-have yet to ,discover through print the pleasures of a well-conceived story be i t mystery, adventure, ro- mance; or problem ; the satisfaction of informativeand interest- ing nonfiction; the delight of humor and poetry; the mind-stretching wonders of fantasy and ; the chills of ghost and witch tales; the challenges of sports literature; the revelations of biography and autobiography;. and the many other experiences that come.through -reading. Thus, in, this new edition of High InterestEasy Reading we offer a wide variety of recently published titles suitable in interest, .quality, and ease of reading for capable but reluctant junior and senior. high school students. In selecting titles for inclusion, we have kept in mind the impor- tance of a book's. appeal in many dimensions: its title, its ability to grasp the reader's attention within a page or two,and its ability to carry the reader toward a satisfying conclusionor, resolution while it employs a tone; style, and language that is engaging and honest and a feirmat that is not demeaning or condescending. All titles included in-,. this edition are, listings; most were published between 1979 and 1982. We do not include any works listed in prior editions of High Interest--.Easy Reading, nor do we cite works frequently-assigned as _ requiredreading. Those titles are already known -to Most teachers and Media specialists. The categories- reflect careful deliberation on readerinterest and appeal,. One of the new, features of this edition is in the inclusion of series books that have been carefully screened by the same standards we applied to individual listings; thus 'We excluded some titles in a series although they were published within the 1979-1982 time period. We agreed that a series book of special merit should, when appropriate, be included in another category as an individual listing. For example, felt the Baker Street Irregulars mystery were so well done that we have listed them collectivelyin the Series category and individually

82 I '83 Afietword to the Teacher in the Mystery and Crime category. The other Series books have a summary annotation forthe entire series. Finally, the fact that we include in the Series section a numberof adapted classics should not be taken as a blanket endorsementof such works. These particular titlesdo preserve the essence ofthe original work, while manyadapta tions do not. We have not used the labels-Junior, Senior, or Junior/Seniorof ,) of the / prior editions. Instead, mostficiion annotations indicate the age to give teachers and studentssome indication oftile-reading' level of the intended audience.Because current youngadult literature oftca displays aspects ofrealism .that have becomecommonplace in notice of much adult literature; we haveincluded where appropriate a mature language orsubjectm -All books have been testedfor readability, and none measure above aneighth-grade reading level.
