Some of these I found doctrinaire and wrong-headed, others I found open- minded and harmless; but I did not find any of them particularly informative, insightful, or thought- provoking. Part II is in encyclopedia format; a collection of (by my quick count) 114 articles, arranged alphabeti- cally by topic, in double column, by various authors. 43 of these are critical terminology, 46 are persons (contributors to critical discourse, not authors of chil- dren’s books), 7 are critical schools or modes such as “postmodernism”, 9 are genres, 3 are literary devices, and 6 are on other topics, such as “animation”. The topics chosen for inclusion here are for the most part ones that arise in the essays; overall, therefore, it is a somewhat haphazard collection. For example there is an article on “animation” with descriptions of cel animation and CGI, and an article on “Disney- fication”, but no article on “film”. The only three liter- ary devices that earn an article are “focalization”, “free indirect discourse”, and “metafiction”. At least fifteen of the articles are about professors here and there who specialize in children’s literature, an unusual emphasis for a general book of this kind.

    Readers’ Guide for by J.R.R. Tolkien ABOUT THE BOOK Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit— a hairy-footed race of diminutive peoples in J.R.R. Tolkien’s imaginary world of Middle-earth — and the protagonist of The Hobbit (full title: The Hobbit or There and Back Again), Tolkien’s fantasy novel for children first published in 1937. Bilbo enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. He does not seek out excitement or adventure. But his contentment is dis- turbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum, and entwine his fate with armies of goblins, elves, men and dwarves. He also discovers he’s more mischievous, sneaky and clever than he ever thought possible, and on his adventure, he finds the courage and strength to do the most surprising things. From the Archives of Hildifons Took While working on this project, it is easy to ruminate about its scope and future. It is impossible for this to be a day-by-day (or even year by year) chronicle of Tolkien fandom. Time has erased many small Tolkien societies and clubs of which I’ve never heard. The focus has always been to make this a useful view of Tolkien fandom through the use of printed fanzines and some printed ephemeral material. Additionally, I have decided at this point to limit my efforts to English only material.

Tolkien’s Sources and Why They Matter Jason Fisher Source criticism is the study of how authors construct their works from earlier sources and analogues. All authors have some sources and influences, but those of J.R.R. Tolkien are especially rich and varied. As a result, this aspect of Tolkien scholarship has been a fruitful one for many years, but it has also sometimes gone astray or looked for sources in the wrong places. In this survey lecture, we’ll explore some of the major sources behind The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. But discovering Tolkien’s sources, while great fun, is only part of the process. We also need to understand why they matter and how they can help us to appreciate Tolkien all the more. 11:30a.m-12:15pm Teaching Tolkien in Today's University Roundtable session moderated by Leslie A. Donovan and Megan Abrahamson Panelists include: Kristine Larsen, Yvette Kisor,Robin Reid and Judy Ford Academic interest in Tolkien and his works has advanced from the peripheral study of a popular culture phenomenon to a field of substantial academic scholarship, and higher education has used Tolkien-related courses primarily as a means to help students reflect on literary traditions of the medieval past as seen through a modernist lens.
