Master of Arts (History), August, 2017, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. In 1809, Elizabeth Bayley Seton founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first American community of women religious. A year later, she and the sisters established St. Joseph’s Academy and Free School in Emmitsburg, a small agricultural community in northern Frederick County, MD. Seton is credited with founding the parochial school system in the United States. She and the Sisters of Charity also contributed to society in the early republic by educating a new generation of republican women. American philosophers developed the concept of republican motherhood following the Revolutionary War to reconcile republican values with how women perceived their relationship to the state. Reformers like Judith Sargent Murray and Benjamin Rush argued that women needed to be better educated to fulfill their roles as wives and mothers in the new republican society. -

The two articles that fol- low, "The Woman Elizabeth Bayley Seton: 1793-1803," by Sister Marilyn Thie, S.C., and "The Woman Elizabeth Ann Seton: 1804-1812," by Sister Mary Ann Donovan, S.C., address that question. Most pub- lished work focuses on Elizabeth Seton as the first American-born saint and/or foundress of the Sisters of Charity in the United States. Interest here goes in another direction. We will bracket, without deny- ing or challenging, her role as saint and foundress to look at her using the category of gender. Who was Elizabeth Bayley, then Seton, as a woman? What do we learn about her when we examine her as a woman in her time, her world? The image of an hourglass connects these two articles. Beginning at the wide top opening, the first article places Elizabeth within the context of her world, amidst life in late eighteenth century New York City as experienced by women of her class, race, and age. -

Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York on 28 August 1774. She was the second daughter of Doctor Richard Bayley and Catherine Charlton Bayley. She was of French and English ancestry. Her father was born in Fairfield, Connecticut, and her mother in Staten Island, New York. Her religious ancestry was staunchly Protestant. She could claim two of the original Huguenot settlers in New York among her ances- tors and her mother's father was the long-time rector of Saint Andrew's Anglican Church on Staten Island.' Though no baptismal records for Elizabeth have ever been found, we can say with confidence that she was baptized into the Anglican Church as an infant or small child.2 Elizabeth's mother died in 1777, leaving Doctor Bayley with three small girls. -

Reflection for January 4, 2013 Feastday of Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton By Maria Fest, CDP I am always inspired when I reflect on the life of a foundress of a religious congregation. I was inspired by the journey of Elizabeth Ann Seton as she kept responding to the ongoing call as she sought to serve the God she came to know in prayer. As we begin this reflection, I want to present a snapshot of Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton’s life. She was, as we know, the first native born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. She established the first Catholic school in the nation in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she also founded the first American congregation of religious Sisters—the Sisters of Charity. Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in 1774, two years before the Revolutionary War. She was the second child of a socially prominent couple, Dr. Richard Bayley and Catherine Charlton, of New York City. The Bayley and Charlton families were among the earliest colonial settlers of the New York area. Her father’s parents were prominent French Huguenots living in New Rochelle, New York. He later served as the Chief Health Officer of the Port of New York. Her mother was the daughter of an Episcopal minister who served as rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Staten Island for 30 years. Elizabeth was raised in the Episcopal Church. Thus far, it would be hard to predict that this child of privilege, raised in a Christian home, but not Catholic, would someday found a religious community. -

CHAPTER 3 hg FATHER AND DAUGHTER After Elizabeth Bayley married into the Seton mercantile family, her relations with her public-spirited father continued as close as before. When Dr. Bayley traveled away from New York, he corresponded with his daughter and complained on occasion, “Never was I more vexed or disappointed than this evening. Why did you not write by the post?”1 He confided in her his fatigue and ennui in Newark. “Work, ache, cards, loss of money, sick of Pandora’s box,” were phrases he used to voice his dissatisfaction with his own life.2 But the summers Elizabeth spent on Long Island found him cheerfully running out in his boat to see her and receive “the most cheerful welcome in the world.”3 There is no way of conclusively defining the dislocation of family relations which seemed to have existed between Dr. Richard Bayley and his second wife, but the veiled references to these relations suggest that the quick-tempered surgeon at this period had forbidden Elizabeth to effect any reconciliation. This rift was pointed up by the return of Eliza Craig Sadler from Europe and the subsequent marriage of William Craiga to Emma Bayley, Elizabeth’s half-sister.4 Elizabeth found the joy in Sad’s return diluted by the difficulty the family feud presented. She explained to Julia Scott: My Intercourseb with Mrs. Sadler—will be so much mixed with vexation, and our difference will be a source of so much mortification to her, that I can never visit her without expecting to meet those I do not wish to meet, and would rather now wish to avoid what was once so great a pleasure.5 Dr. -

"One faith, one hope, one Baptism" - Elizabeth Seton' In Genesis 10:13, God says to Noah: "This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth." Can one look at a rainbow and not be reminded of that covenant with God? Baptism is strongly allied to the initiation of the covenant. The Greek verb baptizein, from which we derive our term "baptism" means "taking the plunge." "It is a "joining" that is so radical it has eternal consequences; we can never "un—join." Baptism is never repeated.112 The metaphor of the rainbow, a multi-faceted prism, captures the baptismal covenant of Elizabeth Seton. -

Full Biography of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Overview Two hundred years ago, Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first new community for religious women to be established in the United States. She also began St. Joseph’s Academy and Free School, the first free Catholic School for girls staffed by Sisters in the United States. Her enduring legacy now includes six religious communities with more than 5,000 members, hundreds of schools, social service centers, and hospitals throughout America and around the world. She was canonized on Sunday, September 14, 1975 in St. Peter’s Square by Pope Paul VI. The first citizen born in the United States to be raised to the altars, her remains are entombed here in the Basilica that bears her name. The remarkable life of Elizabeth Ann Seton spans the full spectrum of human experience. She was a New York socialite, a devoted wife, a dedicated volunteer in charitable organizations, the mother of five children, a convert to Roman Catholicism, an educator, friend of the poor, catechist—a tireless servant of God. Her story is instrumental to understanding her ongoing legacy and enhancing your pilgrimage to the Shrine. Newsletter of the New Jersey Catholic Historical Commission June 2015 Volume III, Issue 1 Message From the Chairman Back in 1976, the United States had many grand celebrations to commemorate the bicen- tennial of our country. There were parades and fireworks and all kinds of ceremonies to mark this great anniversary. That same year, the bishops of the United States issued a document commemorating this anniversary and strongly suggesting that each diocese should establish an archives as well as appoint an archivist. Here in New Jersey, the bishops of our state went even fur- ther. They established a commission under the chairmanship of Bishop John J. Dougherty to research and produce histories of the Catholic Church in New Jersey. It was composed of a representative from each of our dioceses and some historical scholars also became members. This group is now known as the New Jersey Catholic Historical Commission. Down through the years it has been meeting at regular intervals and has discussed various ways to make our Catholic history better known to our fellow Jerseyites. This commission has produced many study days to help parishes write their histories, and several of our dio- ceses have published their own histories with its assistance. Very early on, it also pub- lished a newsletter under the direction of the late Professor Joseph Mahoney. He was able to get many articles about our history and present them to its readers. Of late, this newsletter has not been published as regularly as we wished. However, we hope to get back on track with this issue of this publication, which we are calling The Recorder. -
