Vigyan Samachar: MoES News 24/11/2020 Cyclone ‘NIVAR ‘to intensify: Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts on orange alert New Delhi, November 24, 2020 (Vigyan Samachar) As per ESSO-Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, there is a cyclonic storm ‘NIVAR’ over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the past three hours which lay centered at near latitude 10.0°N and longitude 83.0°E, at 0830 hrs IST on today 24 November 2020. This has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours, IMD said today morning. The IMD-INCOIS also issued an orange alert for the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts warning of the possibility of widespread damage in Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Myladuthurai, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts due to cyclone NIVAR. The extremely severe cyclonic storm is also expected to move west- northwestwards for the next 12 hours and then northwestwards and across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry during the evening of 25 November 2020 at high velocity as a severe cyclonic storm, the weather office said. As per latest update cyclone Nivar may cross Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram as a very severe cyclonic storm during late evening of November 25, 2020 or midnight. Hence, All India Radio Puducherry (Pondicherry) will have special emergency broadcasts continuously tonight on 1215 kHz (20 kW) instead of signing off at 11.10 pm. The INCOIS-IMD weather advisory warns fishermen not to venture into Southwest & adjoining west-central & the southeast Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and along & off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts during 24-25 November 2020. The IMD has also warning people in these areas to stay indoor and advised coastal hutment dwellers to shift to safer places and postpone fishing operations until 26 November 2020. Cyclone Nivar - Important Facts Cyclone Nivar is a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ that is expected to hit the southeastern coast of India on midnight of 25th November 2020. Cyclones and other natural disasters that affect India and the world are important topics for the UPSC exam. Cyclone Nivar The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the severe cyclone Nivar will intensify into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ and make landfall between Mamallapuram (in Tamil Nadu, around 56 km from Chennai) and Karaikal in Puducherry, on 25th November at midnight or early hours of the 26th of November. • The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts are experiencing heavy rains and strong winds due to the impending cyclone. Many parts of the metropolitan city of Chennai have been flooded due to the heavy rainfall. • The winds that the cyclone brings could be between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour. • Officials had stated they would release water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir near Chennai due to the heavy rain received in the wake of Nivar. • People living in low-lying areas have been evacuated. • The Indian Army has sent teams and rescue boats to the affected areas for assistance in the aftermath of the landfall. • Thousands of people have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. • Trains and flights have been cancelled owing to the cyclone. • Experts say that after landfall, the cyclone may take up to six hours to weaken.

Cyclone NIVAR, which intensified into a "severe cyclonic storm" this morning, has made landfall on Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. As per the latest weather forecast issued by INCOIS-IMD, NIVAR has moved from southwest Bay of Bengal to westnorthwestwards with a speed of 11 kmph in the past six hours and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today 25 November, 2020 over southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 10.7°N and longitude 81.7°E, about 240 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, about 250 km east southeast of Puducherry and 300 km south southeast of Chennai. The severe cyclonic storm also expected to move west-northwestwards across the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry during mid- night of 25 November and early hours of 26 November 2020 as a very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph, weather office said. The North Indian Ocean has the largest number of tropical cyclones in this basin, and the frequency is almost five times greater than in the Arabian Sea (AS). The semi-enclosed structure of this basin, in combination with its funnel form, steers the cyclone path that hits the ground. The four maritime states located on the east coast of India are highly vulnerable to tropical cyclones. One of them, Andhra Pradesh has been exposed to frequent hydrological and meteorological hazards due to variations in the geographical and bathymetric characteristics like tropical cyclones generated by the Bay of Bengal. To reduce risk in coastal areas, understanding of hazard factors and threat risk levels is important. Five out of nine districts along the coastal Andhra Pradesh were slightly damaged and three districts (Chittoor, Kadapa and Kurnool) severely damaged due to cyclone Nivar. The state government has deployed eight NDRF and six SDRF teams in 4 districts and has been able to prevent much of the disaster by providing relief measures. Based on a preliminary assessment, 1.12 lakh people, more than 1,400 km of roads, 2,706 animals and crops on about 5 lakh acres were affected.

The Nivar storm originated in the Bay of Bengal and whipped up windspeeds close to 125-145 kmph, blowing away roofs and felling standing crop. However, relatively fewer lives were lost compared to the havoc wreaked by Amphan in West Bengal in May. What aided relief operations in the anticipation of Nivar was that it largely conformed to forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Cyclone Nivar | In pictures Over the years, India’s ability to track the formation of cyclones has improved significantly. There is a network of 12 doppler weather radars (DWR) along India’s coast if one were to begin counting from Kolkata and trawl up to Mumbai — there are 27 in all in the country. Depending on where a storm is forming, these radars send pulses of radio waves to gauge the size as well as the speed at which water droplets are moving. The earlier generation of radars was unable to track such progress in real time, but with DWRs, now the base standard of weather radars, it is usually possible to detect a potential storm at least four-five days in advance.
