See You On Shavuos!

In just a few days we will be celebrating the often own religion, he would frantically look through each forgotten Jewish holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot, month of his calendar to figure out when on earth celebrating the giving of Torah at Mount Sinai, is often Shavuos was. In time, apparently even the non-Jewish confused in purpose and meaning with , store owners started using the expression, Come back which celebrates our annual ritual of rolling the Torah and see me after Shavuos" to delay a sales pitch back to the beginning and starting to read it all over indefinitely. again.

As if to imply that God gave that melody to the Jewish people at the same time he gave the Torah. Think about that Oseh Cantor Steve Hummel Shalom. You know the one- the Israeli one. It's the one that everybody knows at every in America. We say that is Mi Sinai, even though it was written in the 1960?s.

I think our tendency to overlook Shavuot is simply due to the fact that it falls at the end of the academic school year when families have so many secular things going on, and our religious school has already wrapped up for the year.

Growing up, I learned what Shavuot was (or Shavuos when pronounced by 20th-century Ashkenazic Jews) because of an unusual circumstance in my family. My dad was a traveling salesman in the furniture industry. He explained to me that if a salesman stopped in to a store, at any time of the year, and the Jewish store owner didn't want to be engaged in the sales pitch, the store owner would simply say, "Now's not a good time. Come back and see me after Shavuos. "Typically, the salesman would smile and say, Great, thank you! as he left the store. Then, regardless of his The President's Message

Your GTY Advisor Barak Malkin Announcements To The Best Temple, Sincerely by Barak Malkin

While I am very excited for my new position as Assistant Director at the URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy, I am extremely sad to be leaving Temple Sinai. In the 12 years of working as a Jewish Professional, TSG is, by far, the best synagogue I?ve worked for. Michelle and I have really loved being members of this community and will miss all of you very dearly. I would like to thank everyone who has helped to make our time here so warm and special: (insert membership directory here). I would be remiss if I did not especially thank the high school youth group (GTY) kids and their families. You are all wonderful. Each of you brought your own uniqueness and wonderful personalities to make the youth presence at TSG so strong over these past three years. Thank you also to the GTY board members (past, present, and future) for all of your hard work and for helping to reinvigorate and sustain the best youth group in NFTY SoCal! Thank you again to everybody. Every one of you makes this temple what it is and

I will miss all of you.

It is her story and the story of Molly, a young Indian girl in foster care and the relationship that develops that is the basis of this fascinating glimpse into a part of our history. Working in a community service job to help Vivian, Molly finds answers to Vivian?s life and to her own.
