Orphie Marcellus American Squaredence, September 1990 3 merican Squaredance Magazine is A 45 years old this month. In Septem- ber of 1945, Charles Crabbe Thomas, a New Jersey lawyer and caller, published the first issue. The magazine was then called American Squares, later became Square Dance, and under the present editors, reverted to American Square- dance. For many, it has remained American Squares, and we have never minded the shortened form. It reminds us and many veteran dancers of the longevi- ty of the publication. For 45 years, ASD has served square dancers through the exchange of information, the advertising of new products, the promotion of varied square dance opportunities, the memories of great moments at festivals and conventions. around quickly, don't they? Jo Jan Nunley discusses the Golden Rule, which we all learned during our School Days. Jim Segraves, past chairman of USDA, who is very interested in education and leadership, puts forth several scenarios dealing with committee responsibility in an interesting article. Don't miss Bev Warner's im- aginative article on body music. Last winter as we watched a Polynesian show in Hawaii, we heard about an iris nursery in Oregon and their special May dances. The Nunns sent us their story, with pictures of the dancing on the loading dock. Along with these articles, we have again printed the theme for Square Dance Month. Use it, promote it-may it work well to recruit dancers galore for this season! 1. A to Z Engravers 70 26. English Mountain 54-55 51. Lowell's Place 62 77 Sewing Specialties 71 2. ASD Tours 66 27.
