This explosive special gives a raw, intimate first-hand account of Steve-O's downward spiral to when he ultimately hits rock bottom and is saved by the intervention of friends and his own will to do whatever it takes to get - and stay - sober. "Steve-O: Demise and Rise" airs on Sunday, May 3rd at 10pm ET/PT. "Addiction is a brain disease that kills. Steve suffered from the profound consequences of long-standing polydrug addiction. The disease brought him to the edge of sanity and one night nearly took his life," said Dr. Drew Pinsky. "His recovery has been an inspiring but gut-wrenching process. Steve remains an inspiration to all. Those that have come to know him through this process love him." "This documentary captures the most frightening moments of my friend at the apex of his addiction. I know because I was there," said Johnny Knoxville. "More importantly though it offers hope, and documents the tremendous amount of courage and hard work on Steve-O's behalf to turn that hope into a healthy person." Steve-O, a self-professed ham in front of the video camera, never leaves home without it. Since his early teens, Steve-O has captured moments of his life on tape, including everything from his days as an amateur stuntman and flea-market clown to his rise to fame as popular member of "Jackass" and "Wildboyz." Consequently, the darkest hours of Steve-O's life are also captured. Viewers will see moments of extreme substance abuse, including the marathon nitrous oxide sessions, terrorizing his next door neighbor, his ill-fated attempt at being a gangsta-rapper and several infamous public displays of self-destructive behavior. All of Steve-O's antics lead to his friends stepping in, turning off the camera and forcibly admitting him to the medical center where he was forced to begin the process of learning to live sober. Since his intervention, it hasn't been without hurdles that Steve-O has tried to stay clean, sober and focused on making amends to those closest to him hurt by his addiction -- his family and friends. Steve-O's journey has taken him through highs and lows, and this documentary follows them all, right up until his first performance this year on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars." Now faced with the daily challenge of living a clean life while still being the Steve-O that everyone loves, he wants it to be known that he is not the poster child for drug addiction or recovery but wants to show how truly difficult it is to stay sober every day. Bam cannot tolerate the pain enough to remain perfectly still, so the brand touches him several times, resulting in multiple images that seem blurry or in motion. Bam’s mother, who usually plays the role of game audience for his antics, balks when she learns that her son has been hurt as well as permanently marked. She asks Dunn why anyone would ever burn a friend. “Cause it was funny,” Dunn answers.1 Jackass mines the body in pain as well as the absurd and the taboo, often dealing with one or more of the body’s abject excretions. Jackass offers no compelling narrative arc or cliffhangers, presenting instead a series of discrete segments that explore variations on the singular eponymous focus of the show: playing the fool. This deliberate idiocy is the show’s greatest strength, and its excesses seem calculated to repeatedly provide the viewer with a mix of schadenfreude, horror, and disbelief.

In one of the most compelling documentary scenes I have ever seen play out on any screen, Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O willingly submit to paper cuts. First, Johnny announces he‘s going to have paper cuts administered to the webbing of his toes and then his fingers: ―I‘m Johnny Knoxville and this is ‗Paper Cuts‘.‖ An anonymous set of hands administer the iconic manilla envelope between his left pinky toe and the one next to it. He reacts, yelling, but then also laughing—and so does a roomful of twenty-something men, howling with the admixture of sympathetic pain and laughter and outright Schadenfreude that is the hallmark of the Jackass franchise. Johnny spreads his toes to make sure the audience sees the wound: a nauseating familiar little pink sliver between his toes. The manila envelope is then administered to his next toe-webbing. The same individual and group howling results. A voice out-of-frame suggests that he‘ll forget about the pain in his feet when he spreads his fingers. The film obliges, cutting to the same envelope slicing open the webbing between his index and middle finger. About then, one of the cameramen loses it.     Journal of Ecocriticism 4(2) July 2012 Toward an Irreverent Ecocriticism Nicole Seymour (University of Arkansas at Little Rock)* Abstract I see an irreverent ecocriticism as being indebted to two major developments in and around the field: poststructuralist ecocriticism and queer ecology. Poststructuralist ecocriticism, as many readers no doubt know, can be traced to scholars such as William Cronon, Dana Phillips, and David Mazel. In his American Literary Environmentalism (2000), Mazel stresses that his work is not “about some myth of the environment, as if the environment were an ontologically stable, foundational identity we have a myth about. Rather, the environment is itself a myth, a ‘grand fable’ … a discursive construction, something whose ‘reality’ derives from the way we write, speak, and think about it” (xii). Similarly, the essays in Cronon’s 1996 collection Uncommon Ground taKe aim at simple, essentialist ideals of nature and wilderness; N. Katherine Hayles, for instance, argues that “the distinction between simulation and nature … is a crumbling diKe, springing leaks everywhere we press upon it” (411). Some of this worK may seem dated to those who engaged with poststructuralism much earlier. But, judging by the negative reactions of many ecocritics and environmentalists, it can also be viewed as quite the opposite: reactionary, overstated, heretical.1 Indeed, this worK could be described as perverse for how it breaks with its forebears, which include not just “classic” ecocriticism but also first-wave or conservationist environmentalism. My students often ask me if I think there’s hope for the future of the planet. I tell them I think it’s probably going to hell in a handbasket, and all of us with it.
