Welcome to Duluth and the 45th annual Grandma’s weekend!

Media coverage and contributions have always been a cornerstone of our event, and your efforts have helped grow our race weekend into what it is today. On behalf of the Grandma’s Marathon staff and Board of Directors, we thank you for your continued support and engagement.

After more than four decades of this great summer tradition, we have welcomed hundreds of thousands into our community and witnessed participants from all over the world cross the Grandma’s Marathon finish line.

Each of these participants has their own unique story. From those trying to beat their personal records to those overcoming illness or personal hardship, each runner’s story is what makes Grandma’s Marathon so very special. Your telling of these stories only deepens the roots our race has in Duluth and the surrounding communities, and we thank you for all you have shared throughout the years.

With the numerous festivities and surrounding activities of Grandma’s Marathon weekend, there surely is something for everybody. People from all over the world come together to make this a world class event with small town charm, and we could not do it without each and every one of them.

The 2021 Media Guide is designed to be your primary source of information as you cover our race weekend, but please do not hesitate to reach out if we can help in any other way to make your work easier and more effective.

2021 media guide Thank you for all you do, and please enjoy the 2021 Grandma’s Marathon weekend!

THE IRON TWO Jim Nowak (Cornell, WI) – (608) 415-9990, [email protected] John Naslund (Bloomington, MN) – (952) 475-4297, [email protected] Jim Nowak and John Naslund are the answers to an obscure question of Grandma’s Marathon history. Out of more than 225,000 people who have completed the 26.2-mile race since its start in 1977, Nowak and Naslund are the only two to have finished the race every year. They have both registered over 1,152 miles on the Grandma’s Marathon course, and they’ll be back for their 45th year in 2021.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE Brian Reynolds (Bloomfield, NJ) – (781) 710-1894, [email protected] Brian Reynolds was diagnosed at age 4 with a disease called meningococcemia, an often fatal form of meningitis. He was lucky to survive, but the disease did result in the amputation of both his legs below the knee. Now 32, Reynolds picked up running just five years ago but has already set six world records for double amputees in distance running. This will be his first-ever trip to both Minnesota and Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

IN MEMORY OF A LOVED ONE Amber James (Waterville, MN) – (507) 330-0527, [email protected] Amber James will be running her first-ever Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and is also fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). James’ cousin was hospitalized with aplastic anemia, a rare condi- tion that causes the body to stop producing enough new blood cells. Her cousin passed at the age of 11 before she could meet him, but she plans to run this June in his memory and in recognition of the support her family received from RMHC during his treatment.

WHAT DO WE DO NOW? Wanita Erlien (Charlotte, NC) – (980) 297-2580, [email protected] Josh and Wanita Erlien were staring at the reality of becoming empty nesters when she had a crazy idea – they could start running together. She downloaded a “Couch to 5K” training program and together, they completed their first 5K in October 2019. After 25 years of marriage, they had discovered a new love of running. This year’s Grandma’s will be Wanita’s first-ever marathon, and she’ll be joined by her two neph- ews and niece who will be participating in their first-ever marathon, as well.

MISSING YOU Melissa Robert (Chetek, WI) – (715) 642-1145, [email protected] Sisters Melissa Robert and Amanda Hodgson started running together in 2012 and had each participated several times in the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon. In August 2020, Amanda was tragically hit and killed by a car while jogging near her home. Now, Melissa is signed up for this year’s half marathon in her sister’s story leads memory and to raise awareness for safety.

STORY LEADS 94 2021 MEDIA GUIDE PRESENTING SPONSORS

Grandma’s Marathon is the 12th largest marathon in the United States and routinely recognized as one of the most scenic, festive, and well-organized races in the world. Achieving and maintaining this reputation is possible largely because of our sponsors. Our event receives significant financial support, specifically from our three presenting and 28 major sponsors. In addition to that, more than 85 contributing, supporting, and prod- uct sponsors provide more financial and in-kind contributions to aid in the success of Grandma’s Marathon.

TOYOTA – As the marathon’s official vehicle for more than 30 years, Toyota is excited to once again support the local Duluth community during Grandma’s Marathon. Be prepared to stare – this vehicle deserves to be driven and seen! Without the support of our local area dealers – Kolar Toyota, Kari Toyota, Iron Trail Toyota, and Ashland Toyota – our company’s participation in Grandma’s Marathon would never be possible. Toyota is proud to help local organizations like Grandma’s Marathon that are devoted to improving the lives of others – organizations that share the belief that when we work together, great things are possible. Plus, don’t miss the 2021 Toyota Sienna placed at the Miller Hill Mall and Essentia Health Fitness Expo featuring the names of all this year’s participants!

MEMBERS COOPERATIVE CREDIT UNION – Just like Grandma’s Marathon, Members Cooperative Credit Union (MCCU) is a Minnesota classic. The company got its start in Cloquet in 1936, initially formed by seven men and one woman. As a not-for- profit organization, MCCU has helped many people reach their financial goals and attain lasting financial fitness. MCCU is proud to keep pace with convenient mobile services and technology that won’t slow you down. With competitive rates on savings and loans, the credit union can help you make the most of your hard-earned money. We believe in the power of doing good for all our branch communities, and we look forward to congratulating this year’s Grandma’s Marathon participants at the finish line!

ASICS – Since its founding in 1949, ASICS Corporation has been committed to nurturing the world’s youth through sports as its contribution to society.
