Piano’s quiet character and almost solemn, bearded appearance brought an atmosphere of serious, contemporary creativity to the glamorous event. The great gardens and the classical salons of the White House were filled with the flower of the world’s architectural talent including the majority of the laureates of the previous twenty years. But perhaps the most significant aspect of the splendid event was the opportunity it gave for an overview of the recent past of architecture at the very heart of the capital of the world’s most powerful country. It was rather as though King Louis XIV had invited all the greatest creative architects of the day to a grand dinner at Versailles. -

The twentieth anniversary of the Pritzker Prize and the presentation of the prestigious award to Renzo Piano made for an extraordinary event. Piano’s quiet character and almost solemn, bearded appearance brought an atmosphere of serious, contemporary creativity to the glamorous event. The great gardens and the classical salons of the White House were filled with the flower of the world’s architectural talent including the majority of the laureates of the previous twenty years. But perhaps the most significant aspect of the splendid event was the opportunity it gave for an overview of the recent past of architecture at the very heart of the capital of the world’s most powerful country. It was rather as though King Louis XIV had invited all the greatest creative architects of the day to a grand dinner at Versailles. In Imperial Washington the entire globe gathered to pay tribute to the very art of architecture itself. Renzo Piano was not overwhelmed by the brilliance of the occasion, on the contrary he seized his opportunity to tell the world about the nature of his work. In his own words, he firmly explained that architecture is a serious business being both art and a service. Those are perhaps two of the best words to describe Renzo Piano’s work. -

We will follow Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura as the former opens the first doors to competitions and the latter follows the master with renewed strength and research vigour. The European convergence provides the opportunity to develop and confirm other architects whose competences and aesthetics are internationally known and recognized. Competitions become an opportunity to other work, different scales and strategies. By 2000, the downfall of the golden initial European years makes competitions not only an opportunity but the only opportunity for young architects. From the early tentative, explorative years of Siza’s firs competitions to the current massive participation of Portuguese architects in foreign competitions there is a long, cumulative effort of competence and visibility that gives international competitions a symbolic, unquestioned value. Juli verlängert, «Goya» verschoben Die Fondation Beyeler wird ab Montag, den 11. Mai wieder täglich offen sein. Zu sehen ist die Ausstellung über den grossen amerikanischen Künstler Edward Hopper sowie die Sammlungspräsentation «Stilles Sehen – Bilder der Ruhe». Beide Ausstellungen haben in der Corona- Krise unerwartet und dramatische Aktualität bekommen. Sie werden aufgrund des Besucherinteresses bis zum 26. Juli 2020 verlängert. Tickets können ab Donnerstag 7. Mai online unter www.fondationbeyeler.ch gebucht werden. Die Fondation Beyeler hat für Besuchende und Mitarbeitende ein umfassendes Schutzkonzept erarbeitet, um die Massnahmen der Covid-19- Verordnung des Bundes optimal umzusetzen. Dazu gehören die Beschränkung der Besucherzahl durch Onlinetickets mit Zeitslots ebenso wie eine neue Besucherführung im Park und im Museum mit räumlich getrenntem Ein- und Ausgang. Edward Hopper als «Maler der Stunde» in der Corona-Krise Über 100‘000 begeisterte Besucherinnen und Besucher sahen in den sieben Wochen vor der temporären Museumsschliessung aufgrund der Corona-Krise die Ausstellung «Edward Hopper». In dieser kurzen Zeit war «Edward Hopper» auf dem besten Weg zum Publikumsliebling. Der Katalog war ausverkauft und musste bereits nachgedruckt werden. Seither haben sich im Museum und in den sozialen Medien viele Menschen eine Wiedereröffnung und eine Verlängerung der Ausstellung gewünscht. Der Kooperationspartner, das Whitney Museum of American Art in New York und die anderen amerikanischen Leihgeber haben eingewilligt. -

Maybe a passionate curiosity for the past and also a vulnerability to poetry … poetry of images revealing the beauty and mystery of the world … W[I] am very moved by … art that … expresses the tragedy of man’s ephemeral condition” (de Menil 1983:50). At the time, Dominique de Menil was working with Renzo Piano on plans for The Menil Collection, the museum that would house the couple’s collection and manifest its poetry (Fig. 1). Thoughtful and meticulous, Dom- inique de Menil labored over every detail of the design and, when construction was complete in 1987, the installation of the collec- tion as well (Fig. 2). Her goals were clear: “I would like my collec- tion to be displayed in such a way that it opens new vistas, that it reveals ‘Terra Incognita’—islands beyond” (ibid.). The Menil Collection, with its 16,000 objects, is but one out- come of this French couple’s vision and philosophy. Intertwining art, social activism, and a profound spirituality, the de Menils left an indelible mark on their adopted city of Houston, both in the campus that houses their museum and related galleries and cha- pels, and in the effect their philanthropic projects had on various institutions in the city. -
