Join us for a private TBE guided tour that looks right into the country's soul. Of course, you wouldn't want to miss some of the more popular highlights of this remarkable country, either. So we begin in Delhi (Old and New) to see her top monuments, great and small, before heading down to Uttar Pradesh -- Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, where no photograph or description has quite measured up to the beauty of the place when experienced firsthand. Watch as the white marble facade is illuminated at sunrise (and sunset) and examine the Taj’s iconic Mughal architecture. But there’s more to Agra than just the Taj, like the Agra Fort and (for those who want to venture further afar) the Tomb of Itmad-ud-Dualah and the mysterious ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri.

PAGE | 01 FBN 30TH GLOBAL SUMMIT | FBN and its Indian chapter are proud to present the 30th Anniversary Global Summit in Udaipur, India from 16-19 October! More than 500 of FBN’s global members will gather in Udaipur - India’s magical City of Lakes – to discuss how business families are mastering paradoxes to marry the competence of the corporation with the soul of the family.Where better to host this year’s peer-learning than India. Said Farhad Forbes, Chairman of FBN: “India is a land of paradox, and as Indians we live with paradox every day. We have modernity intertwined with heritage; tradition and renewal; best business practice coupled with professionalism and spiritualism; poverty with aspiration, determination and hope". Adds Ajay Shriram, Chairman of the Summit Host Committee: “India is a very diverse country – culturally, philosophically, attitudinally. There are 29 states in India and each state virtually has a different language, different food habits, different cultures. At the same time we are a united country.” Summit Venue The Summit will be hosted in the Oberoi Udaivilas and Trident hotel, adjacent properties in the same compound, within a few minutes walking distance of each other. Summit Theme Challenges in business families are often not so much problems to be solved as contradictions to be managed together: tradition and innovation; short-term profit and long-term legacy; preserving family privacy and building a public profile; reason and emotion; meritocracy and inclusion. Such dilemmas are arguably amplified in the Summit's host country: the economist Joan Robinson once said, “Whatever you can rightly say about India, the opposite is also true.” Instead of feeling frustration, business families must learn to draw strength from the paradox dynamic to become a more effective force for good as businesspeople and individually.

  • SOUTHERN RAJASTHAN 221 Kota Bundi Chittorgarh Udaipur Kumbalgarh Ranakpur Mt Abu
© Lonely Planet Publications 220 lonelyplanet.com 221 Southern Rajasthan Southern Rajasthan holds arguably Rajasthan’s most enchanting city, Udaipur, a milk-white confection meandering around several lakes. The city is the ultimate in Rajput fantasy with its cream-coloured havelis (traditional mansions) and palaces, one of which, floating in Pichola Lake, is among the world’s most famous hotels, the Lake Palace. In the south of the region are Rajasthan’s two finest forts, Chittorgarh (Chittor), sprawl- ing over an enormous hilltop plateau, and remote Kumbalgarh, perched at 1100m, with breathtaking views over the dense Aravalli Hills fading into a pale blue horizon. Here, too, are two Jain temple complexes where artistic virtuosity reached dizzy peaks. Ranakpur, deep in an Aravalli valley, has a hall of 1444 pillars, each one different; Dilwara, on a hilltop near Mt Abu, sports marble carving so delicate that it’s almost transparent. Mt Abu is Ra- jasthan’s only hill station; a cool holiday destination for locals, it’s still largely undiscovered by foreign tourists. If you’re keen to get off the well-beaten track, Bundi, though definitely discovered, is an enchanting town, painted Brahmin blue and overlooked by a palace; nearby Kota holds another fine palace. Jhalawar, meanwhile, is really off the trail, with its mighty, forgotten fort and nearby city of temples. Serene Jaisamand, a vast blue-reflecting hill-ringed expanse, is Asia’s biggest artificial lake. The region offers some exhilarating activities too. You can trek or ride the beautiful countryside near Udaipur, Mt Abu or Kumbalgarh, cycle about Bundi, or take a boat trip down the crocodile habitats of the Chambal River.

As per this commitment, succeeding head of the family of Mewar have always fulfilled the sacred position as trustee of Shri Eklingji, a manifestation of Lord Shiva who is the Eternal Ruler of Mewar. All the successors of Bapa Rawal are hereditary 'Dewans' of Shri Eklingji and Trustees of Mewar. The governance of the State of Mewar was thus based on this unique concept of 'Trusteeship' and 'Custodianship'. This form of governance ensures an inbuilt, self-motivated accountability that is crucial for long-term stability. Custodianship of the erstwhile Mewar resided in its day-to-day governance; as a service to the supreme authority unquestioned by the bounds of legalities and ownership for centuries. Faced with such issues in the democratic environment, the House of Mewar judiciously dispersed the governance of their residual heritage into a set of 'Not for Profit' and 'For Profit' enterprises that would conform and could function within the now constitutionally defined legal norms. These organisations effectively operated as individual entities steered by the core values of the House of Mewar for more than two decades.
