That's the percentage of voters who checked Walker in his ninth year of 10 on the Baseball Writers' Association of America Hall of Fame ballot. It's a dramatic jump from his previous high, 34.1 percent last year -- an increase of 88 votes. However, he's going to need an 87-vote leap to reach the requisite 75 percent next year, his final season of eligibility. Jayson Stark of the Athletic noted during MLB Network's telecast that the only player to receive a jump of at least 80 votes in successive years was former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin, who was inducted in 2012. But when publicly revealed ballots had him approaching the mid-60s in percentage, Walker admitted feeling excitement he hadn't experienced in past years. "I haven't tuned in most years because there's been no chance of it really happening," Walker said. "It was nice to see this year, to watch and to have some excitement involved with it. "I was on Twitter and saw the percentages that were getting put out there for me. It made it more interesting. I'm thankful to be able to go as high as I was there before the final announcement." A VALUABLE HOBBY The Knickerbocker Club played baseball at Hoboken's "Elysian Fields" on October 6, 1845. That game appears to be the first recorded by an American newspaper. This Currier & Ives lithograph, which is online via the Library of Congress, depicts the Elysian Fields. As the nineteenth century moved into its fourth decade, Alexander Cartwright wrote rules for the Knickerbockers, an amateur New York City baseball club. Those early rules (which were adopted on the 23rd of September, 1845) provide a bit of history (perhaps accurate, perhaps not) for the “Recently Invented Game of Base Ball.” For many years the games of Townball, Rounders and old Cat have been the sport of young boys. Recently, they have, in one form or another, been much enjoyed by gentlemen seeking wholesome American exercise. In 1845 Alexander Cartwright and other members of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York codified the unwritten rules of these boys games into one, and so made the game of Base Ball a sport worthy of attention by adults. We have little doubt but that this gentlemanly pastime will capture the interest and imagination of sportsman and spectator alike throughout this country. Within two weeks of adopting their rules, members of the Knickerbocker Club played an intra-squad game at the Elysian Fields (in Hoboken, New Jersey).

    GET A HEADS UP ON Batter’s Helmet Safety Start with the Right Size: BRING THE ATHLETE Bring your athlete with you when buying a new helmet to make sure that you can check for a good fit. HEAD SIZE To find out your athlete’s head size, wrap a soft tape measure around the athlete’s head, just above their eyebrows and ears. Make sure the tape measure stays level from front to back. (If you don’t have a soft tape measure, you can use a string and then measure it against a ruler.) SIZES WILL VARY Helmet sizes often will vary from brand-to-brand, so it’s important to check out the helmet brand’s fit and sizing charts to find out what helmet size fits your athlete’s head size. While there is no concussion- Get a Good Fit: proof helmet, a batter’s helmet GENERAL FIT A batter’s helmet should fit snugly all around, with no spaces can help protect between the pads and the athlete’s head.     Mariano and Clara Rivera New York Yankees Hall of Fame Legend and Pastor of Refuge of Hope Mariano Rivera is a Major League Baseball (MLB) Hall of Famer who played 19 seasons for the New York Yankees and retired in 2013, closing a stellar career as a relief pitcher that included 17 seasons as their closer. A 13-time All-Star and 5-time World Series champion, he is MLB's career leader in saves (652) and games finished (952). Among his many accolades, Rivera won five American League (AL) Rolaids Relief Man Awards and three Delivery Man of the Year Awards and finished in the top three in voting for the AL Cy Young Award four times. Rivera was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019 in his first year of eligibility and was the first player elected unanimously by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Raised in Panama in the village of Puerto Caimito, Rivera signed a contract with the Yankees in 1990. He began his career in the major leagues in 1995 as a starting pitcher before converting to a reliever later in his rookie year and became the Yankees' closer in 1997. Over the course of his career he established a reputation as one of MLB's top relievers and was the saves leader in 1999, 2001, and 2004. Rivera was a key contributor to the Yankees' success from the late 1990s through early 2000s. A highly accomplished postseason performer, he was named the 1999 World Series MVP and 2003 AL Championship Series MVP.
