Watch Yourself In 1949, legendary blues guitarist Riley B. King, otherwise known as B.B. King, played a dance hall in Twist, Arkansas. During a scuffle between two patrons fighting over a woman, a barrel of lit kerosene used to heat the venue was knocked to the ground, and set the building ablaze. The show was evacuated, only for King to realize he'd left his Gibson inside, who dove back in to retrieve it. King would later name that first guitar and every forth-coming guitar Lucille, after the woman the two patrons fought over. Fast-forward to 1968, when B.B. King released the album Lucille, (Produced by jazz/blues production legend Bob Thiele) and told the story in full on the eponymous title track. Since that time King has owned a slew of other guitars, all of them named Lucille, and has a deep-seated appreciation for each one. As he says on the album's title track: "I’ve had many guitars since that first incident, and I always call them Lucille. She’s taken me a long way, even brought me some fame...Most of all, she’s kept me alive...being able to eat." Lucille represents early B.B. King at his finest. It's the last traditional blues album before 1969's Completely Well would establish a trademark brand of blues music mixed with lushly arranged string ensembles. By contrast on Lucille the arrangements are more sparse, raw, and simple. King's own skills with an ES-355 Gibson are on full display, amidst a crew of famed blues session musicians like Irving Ashby on rhythm guitar, Lloyd Glenn on piano, Maxwell Davis on organ, and many more. Guitars squeal, bass and drums rumble, brass instuments blare, and King's powerful vocal howl complements Lucille’s winding licks. An important piece of blues history that can't be overlooked. Little Joe Blue by Opal Louis Nations The clincher that puts Little Joe Blue a notch above most B.B. King imitators is the fact that he took the former’s mannerisms and affectations and added a few twists of his own. This made him an extremely emotive original, aside from the fact that he possessed the skills to write uniquely infectious lyrics like the anguished “Dirty work going on” (Movin 1966), the urgent “Standing on the threshold” (Jewel 1968) and the poetic “Give me an hour in your garden” (Miles Ahead 1974). He was born Joseph Valery Jnr. in Vicksburg, Miss. on September 23, 1934 to Abraham Fields and Willie Hodges. He was raised across the Mississippi River in Tallulah, La. through the 1940s then moved to Detroit. As a youngster in Tallulah, Joseph came to be called “Little Joe Blue” because he constantly played Eugene Field’s traditional “Little boy blue” on his harmonica. His first encounters with the blues were in Vicksburg at the Green Lantern dance hall where he snuck around the back and peeked in the door. Jimmy Liggins and T-Bone Walker, among others, played there. From 1951-53 he served in the U.S. Army and was posted out to the Korean front. With a natural propensity to use his hands, he worked on auto assembly lines before he started (at the urging of his hero B.B. King) entering talent shows and sit-in gigs with local bands as a stand-up singer. One of these gigs involved the great “Bobo” Jenkins from Forkland, Alabama.

April 3, 2021 OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE MARGIE EVANS, ICONIC AND SOPHISTICATED QUEEN OF THE BLUES, DIES AT 81 Dateline: Shreveport, Louisiana, April 3, 2021 Margie Evans, a legendary, international Blues and Gospel entertainer, songwriter, music producer, actress, music historian, community activist and motivational spokeswoman, who broke barriers for African American female Blues performers with poise, dignity and sophistication, died on March 19, 2021. In addition to her musicianship, Evans is noted as an activist for parity in music education as well as a promoter of the legacy of Blues music. As she often said, “I’ve been around a long time and I’ve really paid my dues.” She was age of eighty-one. A family statement did not reveal the cause of death. The lengthy career of the unsung, effervescent entertainer is chronicled in her first biographical memoir, “Margie Evans: The Classy, Sophisticated Queen of the Blues, due for release on Amazon in two weeks. In all of her endeavors, Evans embodied African American women of courage, faith and wisdom who demanded respect. In each of her acting roles, radio commercials, iconic albums and international tours, she represented complex, decisive women, articulating a profound grace, depth, perseverance and dignity in each of her performances. Marjorie Ann Johnson was born in 1939 in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the United States. She chose to be known as Margie. Raised as a devout Christian, Margie Evans’ early exposure to music was through gospel, inspired by her mother, Mrs. Veva Williams, who taught Latin and piano. Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Legislature of Louisiana learned of the passing of Art Neville, in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the age of eighty-one on July 22, 2019, after years of declining health; and WHEREAS, Arthur Lanon Neville was born on December 17, 1937, the son of Amelia (Landry) and Arthur Neville Sr.; and WHEREAS, he grew up in New Orleans and was a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist; and WHEREAS, Art Neville started on piano and performed with his brothers at an early age and was influenced by the R&B styles of James Booker, Bill Doggett, Booker T. Jones, Lloyd Glenn, and Professor Longhair; and WHEREAS, when in high school, he joined The Hawketts and, in 1954, recorded "Mardi Gras Mambo" that gained popularity and became a New Orleans carnival anthem; and WHEREAS, Art Neville joined the United States Navy in 1958 and returned to music in 1962; and WHEREAS, in the early 1960s, he formed the Neville Sounds which included Aaron Neville, Cyril Neville, George Porter, Leo Nocentelli, and Ziggy Modeliste playing at the Nitecap and the Ivanhoe nightclubs; and WHEREAS, Art Neville backed many notable artists such as Lee Dorsey, Betty Harris, and the Pointer Sisters; his band had a strong sense of "groove" and, unlike traditional groups, each instrument was free to lead and go anywhere musically … this style, over time, became known as "New Orleans Funk"; and WHEREAS, he was a staple of the New Orleans music scene for more than five Page 1 of 3 SCR NO.

But most critical acclaim is heaped on the period before New York@Night 1964. Ascension, recorded in 1965, is considered by many the end of Coltrane as a 4 legitimate jazz musician, as he moved away from his roots into the burgeoning Interview: Fred Ho avant garde and free jazz scenes. But another group see Coltrane’s shift in this direction helping to propel these new forms, not least because of his championing 6 by Ken Waxman of such musicians as Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, John Tchicai and Marion Artist Feature: Enrico Pieranunzi Brown, now all legends in their own rights.
